Good Afternoon, I'm working on a project and I need to know the official name of the Gates School Building (records annex or something?) and its exact address in Elyria. I can't seem to find it online or in my local phone books. Can anyone help? I am referring to the location of old tax records on microfilm. Thanks in advance, Cindy in Eaton Township

Hi! I haven't been reading all the posts, so I hope this is correct information, but I saw a post before by Sue Strick about the tax records previously being in the Gates Bldg, but now being kept in buildings on the north side of Broad St. in downtown Elyria. Below is the post -- hope its helpful. "For a long time, the old tax records [about 1864 to the early 1900's]were kept in the basement [lower level] of the Administration Bldg.; then,because of space limitations, they were moved to another location. I don't remember the exact sequence, but the tax books were at one time stored in the old (then empty) Elyria Post Office building; at another time, they were kept in the basement of the former school [Gates School?] at Lake Ave. and Gateway Blvd. (I believe); and they have been moved to one or two [or three?] basement storage areas below business/office buildings on the north side of Broad Street in downtown Elyria. I'm pretty sure that's where they were the last time I talked with Dale about the subject -- in a basement storage room on the north side of Broad Street [he said the room WAS air conditioned and well-lit]. The question now is, how does a person get access or permission to view these old tax record books [which I don't believe have been microfilmed]. I suppose you would first contact the Auditor's office in the Admin. Bldg., and inquire as to the current procedure. I also don't know if there is a photocopy machine available in the current storage room.
