Morning, Nancy: Thanks for the history lesson. I don't remember that Carl Taylor Funeral home at all, isn't that strange. The Curtis family were friends of my parents and grandparents and Harvey's son , Bill was an Elyria policeman, FYI. He used to spend summers with his cousins (?) who lived next door to my family on Rt. 113 when I was growing up. It's nice to have those kind of memories all come flowing back. My family used the Sudro-Curtis for many many years...In fact, my father, grandparents and my mother were all buried from there. I seem to remember that there Kroger store across the street also was a Big Lots, or some type of store like that for some years, probably back in the early 60s. Thanks again for the fun history lesson......Call me and stop for a cup of tea sometime......Peg ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Meyers" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 10:34 AM Subject: [OHLORAIN] two of Elyria's funeral homes Peg, The Carl L. Taylor Funeral Home was at 119 2nd St. , across from the Sudro-Curtis Funeral home. The Taylor Funeral Home, sold in July 1951 and then torn down by the Spitzer Bro. Spitzer's expanded parking for the former Kroger grocery store on 2nd St.. Wm. C. Sudro owned his funeral home from the early 20's, then Harvey Curtis born in Elyria 1907, Curtis worked for Sudro in 1923, and then graduated from a Columbus embalming school in 1927. Curtis then returned to work again with Sudro and in 1936 became a full business partner. Sudro died in 1941 & Curtis bought out the Sudro interest in the funeral home business. Harvey Curtis was the son of parents who were originally from LaGrange, namely Carl & Hilda (Hallman) Curtis. Harvey married in 1935 to Miriam Fowl, a daughter or Jay and elizabeth (Spiegelberg) Fowl of Amherst Township. Harvey & Miriam lived at 112 Cedar St. (per my 1952 source). The Taylor funeral home was known to have most of the catholic funerals. It wasn't exclusive for Catholics, but the chit chat at the time was what I said. I remember him and notice he was overweight to say the least, Ken ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron &/or Peg" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 7:50 AM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] two of Elyria's funeral homes > Morning, Nancy: > > Thanks for the history lesson.
