Hi Deb, I never heard of them being in Sheffield, but maybe they had a local office. There was a Logan Natural Gas and Fuel Co. that was in Columbus, Ohio and in Westerville, and served the Fostoria area, Chillicothe, and at least Fairfield County and Ross County, possibly other places, but that's not near Lorain County. They existed from around 1895 and later changed their name to Logan Gas Company. Then I believe around 1930, their leases were taken over by a company called Ohio Fuel Gas Company, and that's who they then became. I wouldn't be surprised though if some small plant or gas lines were piped into Sheffield since 1895 is about when the U.S. Steel plant began and grew quickly, bringing in tons of workers for years, and the whole mill backs Sheffield. They may have needed gas brought in or a new plant constructed. Matt Kocsis is a historian for the Sheffield/Avon area and knows about the Burrell house and grounds, the Metroparks at James Day/French Creek, and since that's all Sheffield and around the mill, he may know of a site in the area where an oil plant may have operated. His number used to be 1-800-526-7275 or 949-5200 (I think this is his office number at the MetroParks). You might want to try him.
