    2. Estella: Thanks for the ideas about preserving old photos. I think everyone will agree most topics relating to ancestors are acceptable here and often spark lively conversations. If you ever run across photos of the Newberry/Newbery family out of Ohio, Iowa New York, I would be interested in knowing. Same for old Bibles etc. I too have Indian lineage that is unproveable, but we keep looking anyway. One thing I have found is that families put the secret of their ethnicity in their back pocket and generally deny any lineage with the tribes. It was safer for them that way. I am collecting information from anyone who has ancestors like this, who are currently willing to talk about how their family treated the native lineage. Eventually, I would like to write an article or book about the practice that seems to have begun after the Revolution and probably before. You are right, there are very few sources for proving lineage, unless the family stayed with the tribe after about 1820, or when the government began making lists and relocating the tribes to reservations. So I have a lot of e-mail's come to me through them. I really hope this e-mail does not offend. I had been looking for my ancestors and contacted rootsweb a year ago. The people were wonderful there and I found out a lot from them about my ancestors. I have an Indian Grandmother that I still can not find though...we found her obituary and grave but nothing to connect her to an Indian Linage. Of course, at that time the Iroquois was all but wiped out in a Massacre and the remaining ones went into hiding either with other tribes or married whites and passed themselves off as white or France, Italian, etc. decent. Her name was Estella Mildred (Ward) Schmidt (later changed to Smith). They lived in Amherst, Ohio and later Avon Lake, Ohio and Lorain, Ohio. If you happen upon anything I would appreciate anything. Wishing you the best in the New Year! Blessings, Estella If no one wants them I would love to have them. I am not related to any Hickeys but I do collect old pictures.

    3. I knew a man in Elyria he is passed on now. His name was Elmer Feming. My grandfather told me his father was Indian. The father disappeared, because the people was giving him and his family such a hard time. The mother brought her family up alone. My grandfather said he was a good person and it was a shame the way he was treated.
