    3. HI Nancy, I have been considering upgrading to FTM 2005. Does it take the place of the old version? Does it upgrade the old version like all of the other upgrades or do you have to re-enter the information? Jane

    3. Jane, You do not have to re-enter your data. When you play the demo tour, it will cover that point. Remember to be very careful of what you actually do click on after you install FTM. Some times a person will click on a wrong line item and unknowingly send their data to FTM and where it can become accessible to others (for the price of a membership) I am very careful of that. There is already too much mis-information that some of my distant cousins, who were new to genealogy and the ethics of good research. They posted some of my "STB' info on the internet. Even though they had agreed not to post it, they are as yet unwilling to correct their mistakes. I notified them years ago, as well as Genealogy.com, but it did not inspire them to correct any data. Live and learn! None the less, I do prefer FTM of all the four gen programs I have used. Nancy > I have been considering upgrading to FTM 2005. Does > it take the place > of the old version? 3. Some things that FTW don't tell you If you like to copy your notes and print them out in # 11 you could in 2005 you can't you must copy them to a word file then print them. If you enjoyed copy from one page of a tree to another you can no longer do that. They did put some nice things in 2005 , but they took away a lot of nice features too. I for one wish they would have add the new things and also left the old things. I know there are things I liked in #11 like printing notes out. karen .

    3. I tried FTM once abt 15 years ago. My primary program is Rootsmagic (Used to be FamOrigins) or Master Genealogist. Much more user friendly (in my opinion). When people ask abt software when I do my speaking engagements I tell them to do the demo's, and find one that works for them. Everyone has different needs and different comfort levels. Finding a software that works for you is one of the most important parts of doing genealogy. I need unlimited note and source capability as well as unlimited facts that I can generate myself. I looked until I found one that worked for me. 3. Hi Jane, If you are considering upgrading, let me suggest you try the new program RootsMagic2 ( www.RootsMagic.com ) which in my opinion is a much better and easier to use program than is FTM. It has an excellent users group which has the developer as a regular participant, and among the participants on the list are a number of former FTM users. The users list is at [email protected] Data entry is easy; it has a wonderful array of lists and reports; gedcoms are easily exported and imported. Yet it has many features you would only find in a program like The Master Genealogist. You could try exporting a gedcom file from your current version of FTM, downloading the demo of RM, and try it out to see if you like the feel of the program. Obviously, not everyone likes the same program or programs, so you may find you either like it or want to try the new FTM or Legacy or something else.
