I have hear this very enthusiastic speaker on several occasions. You will get caught up in his presentation. I will be out of town that afternoon but you won't be sorry if you make the effort to go. The Elyria Public Library presents: "Amongst My Best Men" African-Americans and the War of 1812. Slide presentation by Gerry Altoff, the National Park Service historian at Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial. The program delves into the little-known role of black soldiers, sailors & civilians in one of the least familiar American military conflicts. The experiment of integration by the U.S. Army & Navy was successful, but the country was not progressive enough to continue it after the war ended. This program highlights both the triumph and tragedy of the black soldiers and sailors. This program is free & open to the public. This program is made possible in part by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. "Amongst My Best Men" will be on Saturday, February 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the Scheide Room, Elyria Public Library at 320 Washington Avenue. -- Nancy M.
