Hi Alice, Thank you for your nice comment about our family story. It is the family stories that keep me involved in genealogy, not the names and dates. However, I'm tremendously grateful to our meticulous, gifted family historians who've had the patience to get the details straight. We've had family reunions for more than a hundred years and in 2003 had a national reunion celebrating the 250th anniversary of our Deeg/Dage/Dague ancestors' immigration to America. The organizers asked me to write an article promoting the reunion. Probably my depiction of our ancestors' journey from Germany to America was too loosey goosey for the purists among our family historians. But I wanted to put a human face on our ancestors and wrote from what I believed could have been their personal perspective. There's a place for that kind of writing of family history, but it needs to be coupled with facts. It draws people to the humanity of our ancestors. It's not possible, though, without the meticulous efforts of our family historians who've patiently researched the facts. Alice, I loved your story about the woman who was able to visit the cottage in Ireland where her ancestors had lived! And how wonderful, that you are able to daily use cooking utensils that belonged to your gg grandmother and your grandmother. How I envy your living in a place where a three and a half mile commute can seems too long. I live in metro Atlanta. That's probably enough of an explanation for my envy. Do you live in Lorain Co.? It's my fault -- I had a choice to stay there after college, but had to do a little exploring and never got back home! Those of you who stayed have a sense of continuity and rootedness that we can never regain. Happy New Year to everyone! Cathy -- Alikat42@aol.com wrote: That was really interesting, altho I am not related to you, I still could picture your gg grandparents in a buggy, plodding along to church -- WOW -- 13 miles! I complained this July when my boss moved our office -- I had been driving only 1.5 miles to work (and in a car, not a buggy) and she moved the office to a nice newer place but I am now driving 3.5 miles. Makes me look like a wimp! :-) As I read about our ancestors, I wonder how they managed to live day- to-day. It had to be really tough without running water and flush plumbing and central heating. I was watching a program on PBS about England and it changing back and forth from Catholic to Protestant 3 times in a 10 year period. As my g grandmother's people were from England and she was a Methodist Episopal, I am assuming they came to escape persecution. The German ancestors (Dad's side) came in the 17 and 18'oos and were all Lutheran. This makes me wish I'd paid more attention in History classes in school. A few years ago I read about a woman who went to Ireland and was able to stand in her many times great grandma's kitchen thanks to the man who presently owned the cottage. I was reduced to tears reading her story. It had to be a goosebump feeling to be standing in an ancestor's home! I have a spoon that belonged to my gg and several that belonged to my grandma -- I use them every day. Yes, they are old and only silver plate, but I love them. It gives me a "closeness" to them. have a wonderful day everyone! Kathy, Would appreciate seeing the photos of that church as well. Thank you for your offer. Nancy Meyers
This recent post to the list was a real teaser for historians: February 4th, 1910 Longmont Ledger Boulder Co Colorado..."Uncle John" Ramsey, 119 years old, thought to have been the oldest person in Ohio, died near Elyria January 27th. Ramsey was a slave & escaped 40 years before the Civil War to Oberlin."... Please be advised that there is a wonderful photo of RAMSEY with lots of biographical info (& speculations) on pages 171-174 of THEY STOPPED IN OBERLIN written by William E. Bigglestone, of Oberlin College, published in 1981. All the larger libraries in the county have a copy of this book. Nancy Meyers
Hi Shirley, I think my gg grandparents lived on Smith Rd. in Penfield from the late 1840s until their deaths just a few weeks apart in 1903. It sounds as if your family's farm was very near Penfield Cemetery on Rt. 18 where my gg grandparents are buried, but they were probably not alive by the time your family lived there. I hope very much that others will have information about your family. Nancy Myers, who lived in Penfield for awhile, has a wealth of information about the area, and I see she has contacted you. Every generation of our family since my ggg grandmother is buried in Penfield Cemetery. We just buried our mother there 15 months ago. In the 70's we got to see the farm in Penfield where our gg grandparents raised their thirteen children. I tried to find it a few years ago, but couldn't. Don't know if it's gone or if I was turned around in my directions and missed it. Good luck in your search for information and cousins! The William Phelps Boise (wife Lydia Loring Severcool) family lived on Jones road (I think) in the 1880's? My grandfather Earl C. At that time, Church of the Brethren was called German Baptist Brethren. It is one of three historic peace churches and, like the Amish, they believe in living simply with strong emphasis on community. Once I clocked the distance from my gg grandparents' farm in Penfield to the church in Chatham. Thirteen miles -- quite a distance to go by buggy and the Brethren spent a lot of time in church! I've wondered how they managed -- one buggy wouldn't have been enough for the thirteen children in my gg grandparents' family (it's easy to see why Carole and I have lots of cousins in Lorain, Medina and Wayne Counties)! Those thirteen children must have very sleepy on the buggy rides home -- especially on the days the Brethren had their love feasts after their services. Carole's great grandfather and my gg grandfather were brothers and lived and worked together on adjoining farms in Penfield. They had come from Wayne County where our Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors had pioneered. The Neff side of our family were Mennonites who became Brethren and married into the Lutheran Dague side of our family -- all becoming Brethren. The Neffs were Swiss who moved to the Rhine area of Germany, probably because of religious persecution. From Germany, they immigrated to Philadelphia in 1717. Carole, would you like me to send you the articles that Jane sent? I learned of the fire from John Shafer, member of a Brethren church in VA. We had corresponded years ago because of his relationship to our Neff/Schweinhardt family. As one of our family historians, you would probably like to be in touch with him. Kathy, thank you so much for that web address and for your kindness in offering to photograph the ruins of Black River COB! I appreciate your offer so much and hope the church isn't far from where you live. I know Carole Schetter, our northern Ohio family historian, would also be grateful to have a copy of that e-mailed photo. Thank you again, Kathy! I so much appreciate your going out of your way to do that! I found the info I needed. I don't believe any of our family was there at the time. Thanks, Patricia "martin.abba@juno.com" <martin.abba@juno.com> wrote: Hi Patricia, I'm sorry; I don't have it. I was in my early twenties and living in California when we heard the tornado was heading your way. Tried all night long to call my family in Wellington, but couldn't get through. The Los Angeles Times carried the story of the tornado on the front page. The writer included in that front-page article the name of every victim in far-away Ohio. Hello Patricia I was born in 1942 --yegads -- I will be 65 in April and wonder why this old lady follows me around looking in the mirror when I do. :-) Alice
You're in good company Alice, she's in my mirror too! Even though I "intend to fight her in every way" like the Olay commercials say, she "gets me" while I sleep. I've tried staying awake all night, but I'm too old for that!!! :- { Alikat42@aol.com wrote: Hello Patricia I was born in 1942 --yegads -- I will be 65 in April and wonder why this old lady follows me around looking in the mirror when I do. :-) Alice ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to OHLORAIN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Cheryl, Not sure if it was Penfield also, but it was Pittsfiled, Lorain, OH. I remember this, because my dad looked at the TV and said "That's where my family is from." Since no one spoke too much about my dad's family (Irish brothers who didn't get along, oh shock, surprise!), this comment stuck with me since that day. I was 11 years old. I tell you this because when I decided to start researching my genealogy, this was the comment that allowed me to locate my great-grandfather, Lawrence Daly, out of all the other LDs out there, and it also helped me find living relatives!!! One never knows what's going to help in one's search, so it's always good to "start in your head" remembering anything that could be a clue! As it was, my family, at least the branch from which I sprung, stayed in OH, mostly Lorain County, and my husband and I are still raising a family in Cleveland, myself!!!! My daughter moved back from Boston and has a career here too. Best Regards, and Happy New Year to you also. We were helping in Grafton, but my friend Judy lived in Penfield (or maybe Penfield Juction - are they the same?), I believe. (Having a brain-freeze here!) Her father was killed, mother severely injured, and her dog pulled her out of the rubble. All that was left standing for miles was the statue. Thank you for the information. I did know that married women were their husbands "property" and that if they ran off because they were beaten, he could hunt them down and bring them back home. What a horrid way to live. Alice
That was really interesting, altho I am not related to you, I still could picture your gg grandparents in a buggy, plodding along to church -- WOW -- 13 miles! I complained this July when my boss moved our office -- I had been driving only 1.5 miles to work (and in a car, not a buggy) and she moved the office to a nice newer place but I am now driving 3.5 miles. Makes me look like a wimp! :-) As I read about our ancestors, I wonder how they managed to live day-to-day. Alice
I agree. Grateful to be born in 1950s! Patricia Alikat42@aol.com wrote: Thank you for the information. Shirley, Took that spelling because the Penfield plat map lists B.F.BOICE as owning 144 acres just west of the Phil E. BOBEL farm. I see that your Myron BOISE & his wife are buried in Greenwood Cem. I do own the Greenwood Cem. book if you need any additional info from it, but of course you probably have seen all the LC materials at the OGS library in Mansfield. Chuck & Linda(WAITE)BOISE also attended the same Penfield Church. They sang for many years in a quartet called "SECOND CHANCE" along with the Gordon PERKINS and his late wife Sheryl. The info in Wright's 1916 2 volume History of LC has the lineage of L.S. & Chester BOISE etc. Philip BOBAL (per the 1880 indexer) appears to have lived on lot 56 or 57 of the eastern Browhnhelm Twp. line in that census. Have to get ready now for our retirees get together this evening. We are watching the big OSU game tonight. All finger foods thank goodness! TTYL Nancy
