Nance, That was one of the strangest things that I saw in Grafton during the cleanup -- pieces of straw driven, like nails, into the tree trunks. Shreds of curtain fabric draped on branches like someone's idea of a bad TP Party. Baby carriages in treetops. After that, I used to go into near-panic whenever there was a tornado siren. Living in hurricane-prone Florida has helped "numb" me a little, except a few years ago when we had 4 go through. Thankfully, all were near-misses for my family, but others didn't fare as well. It is good for us to share our memories. My mom remembered the tornado in the 20's, and shared with me how she and her siblings were almost some of the casualties -- they were either on their way or had just left the movie theater that was so heavily damaged. Mom and Dad are both deceased, so I'm grateful that they shared their experiences with me while they could. A lot of those things have gone into memory books for each of my three (grown) children. They aren't very interested in genealogy, but are curious about what their ancestors' lives were like. They can relate better to that. And - they'll have to put all of their books together one day to get the full picture, because each one tells a different part of the story! Patricia, No, I lived in Lorain and graduated from Admiral King in 66. But I knew a lot of people from all over the county because of being in 4-H, Jr. Leadership, and on the Jr. Fair Board. Many of the names I've forgotten - talk about senior moments! :~) I've been away from Lorain County since the late 60's, and only back briefly since. Now I live in Florida, and haven't had an opportunity to go "home" in 14 years. But I'm hoping that will change this year. Cheryl - did you go to Keystone H.S.? I remember that tornado - I was a Senior at KHS in 65 and your name sounds familiar... I also remember school buses collecting students who wanted to help clean the fields as it was just before planting time. We had no school for a couple of days. The tornado went just past a friend's house on Diagonal Rd. and wiped out their neighbor's home, but didn't touch theirs. This site is a wonderful way to preserve the headstones of our ancestors. With the advent of time and weather and vandalism, our headstones are disappearing at an alarming rate. We need to work on preserving a digital image of our family stones as a fitting tribute to our ancestors. You can never have the names of those you are researching in too many places. The more exposure the more likely you are to find others researching the same line. They may have the answer to your brickwall. The site is relatively new and at the present time there are few pictures for Fairfield County posted. There are other sites online for tombstone pictures but none as easy to submit to as Ohiogravestones.org and there are NO flashing, popping or moving ads to have to contend with. You put the pictures on there yourself, you don't have to wait for others to do it for you. They should be up on the site and viewable within 24 hours. Additionally there is no cost to the contributor or those looking for tombstones of their ancestors, hard to find in this day and age where everything costs something. Particularly valuable are those very old headstone photos that you have in grandmas photo album. Scan them into your computer and add them to the site as they may be the only testament to your ancestors life. This would be a great place as backup storage in case of a computer crash or fire. I have everything saved on CDs but they are stored here at home. The address for the site is: Ohiogravestones.org If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Let's see if we can't make this a great source for Fairfield Co., Ohio researchers and a way to remember our ancestors. Thank you very much! Alice, Just remember, he is in the same boat, headed the same direction as we all are. He doesn't know what will happen to him, but if he doesn't die, he will get old too! You and I won't be around when it happens to him perhaps, but we can dream------. So, hang in there and don't let it get you down. I told him that if I didn't believe Jesus saying to "sue no man at law, if a man takes you to court for your coat give him your cloak also" that I could sue him for harassment, age discrimination, and making a hostile work environment. I have been at my job since Maundy Thursday of 1988 and ran it myself 98% of the time. The owner would come in one or two days a month to pay bills. All of a sudden, this "kid" who used to assemble our product on nites and weekends, lost his 4th or 5th job since I've known him. He has been looking for a job since March and goes on interviews but doesn't get hired. If he treats others as he did me most of the summer, I can see why. The owner and her husband think he is gold! My mom used to say something to the effect that the Christ will uncover the truth -- or nothing can be hid from the Christ. I keep praying to love him as God loves him and Jesus tells us to love one another, but at times I feel like giving him an "attitude adjustment" with my stapler by conking him on the head! I won't do it, 'cause I was raised better, but boy, oh, boy, sometimes I wanted to just clock him. The funny thing is, he does favors for me and we do get along a lot of the time. A friend said that he lacks confidence and feels better by bringing someone else down. Well, I guess when you hear "you're old, you're old" enough, you begin to believe it. Thanks for the advice and reminding me I am NOT the oldest person in America! :-) A dear friend of my Mom's will be 91 or 92 the end of February and you'd never know it. I tell her she has a better social life than I do. :-) I told "the kid" at work that I have never told anyone they were old in my life...that my Mom raised me with manners and taught me to be kind to others. His mom watched soap operas all the time while raising her 5 kids and never let them watch Sesame street and other good kid shows. I told him it sounded like his mom was selfish. Dear Virginia, Thanks a lot for your perspective on the aging process. I was just joking around, sort of to make Alice laugh, and she also was writing in a light-hearted manner. I mentioned that I was 11 years old in 1965, and Alice came back with the comment about her age, and then I made a joke about "the old lady in the mirror" that follows me around too! I don't really think that I'm old; my husband and I are still raising our 14 year old son, and I thank God for those glorious days, also. I'm hoping that my husband and I have long lives ahead of ourselves. Both his grandfathers reached the mature ages of 85 and 95, respectively. My Grgf DALY was 98 when he died, and his wife was 85. Two of my cousins are in their 90s. My mom was 81, as was my husband's dad when they passed away. So I'm not planning on departing this earth for some time, and I plan to enjoy it while I'm here. I'm hoping that my husband and I have long lives ahead of ourselves. Both his grandfathers reached the mature ages of 85 and 95, respectively. My Grgf DALY was 98 when he died, and his wife was 85. My mom was 81, as was my husband's dad. So I'm not planning on departing this earth for some time, and I plan to enjoy it while I'm here. Again, thanks so much for your thoughts on the aging process! Hello Virginia, I guess I feel like an old lady....I work with a "kid" at work who just turned 39. He has two college degrees as he keeps telling everyone how intelligent he is and tells me "you're old, you don't like change, you're a pack rat" -- when I call him on it he says "I'm kidding". (then I felt bad for saying it) Again, Virginia, thanks for the kind words. Have a wonderful 2007! Alice

Hi Lorain County Researchers, I thought you might be interested on this link. Our good friend, Gary Good, has submitted several images to this site. If you have digital images we would hope you would contribute them. Also, we have many pictures on our website as well. See Ancestral Images of Lorain County, Ohio <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eohlorain/pictures/index.htm> /Pictures of the Lorain County area and it's people: images of obituaries, headstones, weddings, anniversaries etc. Send your own scanned images to share.* Sue -------- Original Message -------- Subject: [OHFAIRFI] I would like to call your attention to.... My Dad (born May 11, 1900) told me that when he was a young man (could have been 1924) he and a friend (sorry, Dad died in 1984 and I don't know if he ever told me the friend's name) were working on a house. The wife and baby were inside and they yelled at her to go to the cellar. After the tornado cleared out, Dad said they checked on the woman and baby...all four were ok. Dad said that he never got over the sight of seeing the chimney lying in the baby crib -- it had crashed through the roof and just filled up the crib. Freaky! After that, whenever a storm or tornado warning was announced, I would always get into a closet away from the fireplace chimney and the furnace flue chimney. Call me paranoid, but it always kept me safe. I lived in a ranch house after he told me (maybe in 1977) and didn't have a basement, so the bathroom closet seemed the safest place to be. I'd take a battery operated radio and a flashlight and a book with me just in case the power went out. I would also pray a lot! Alice
you have me LOL Patricia !
Hi Cheryl and Cathy, WOW! I was 23 on that Palm Sunday and at a dance with my cousin in the basement of a big old church in Lakewood, OH. We didn't have a clue that it was storming until we came outside after the dance was over. I had forgotten all about it until I read your messages. As I got closer to home (my parents had moved to Strongsville by that time), I noticed trees down and branches down....heard on the car radio what had happened. My cousin had left for Elyria as that is where she lived. She got home ok...my Aunts and Uncles and other cousins who also lived in Elyria were all ok. I am sorry for your friend losing her Dad...that is tragic. I think a woman and a baby were killed in Strongsville that Sunday in the "Atlantic allotment" (between Westwood, Prospect and Royalton Roads) Alice
Hello Cathy, I love family stories...mine and others...they are interesting. I visited a friend in Atlanta back in 1973 (whenever "Underground" was still open) and hated the traffic. "Underground" was fun...lots of bars and entertainment.I don't like the interstate and will go 20 minutes out of my way to avoid them! Maybe it has something to do with my age...when I learned to drive, there weren't very many highways. The Ohio Turnpike was built when I was a teenager and I was 22 or 23 when I-71 North was started. I live in Brunswick, Medina County but grew up in Berea (Cuyahoga county). My Dad's family is from Elyria which is why I originally signed onto ohLorain -- I luckily met a cousin who I didn't even know I had. She has traced the family tree back 7 generations into Germany on my Dad's dad's side....still don't know much about his Mom's family. Maybe when I retire I can spend more time. I thought I was 100% German on his side...come to find out, from another cousin who found me using snail mail, his mother's mother's maiden name was McGuire! Not too German, eh? My Mom's people are all English..one fought in the Revolutionary war..YES on our side! :-) (one of my friends asked me that and I LOL) You have warmer weather in Atlanta than here in Northern Ohio, although this winter has been more than decent. Only snowed once so far, which is how I like it. Alice
Hi Cathy, You are absolutely right - it was Pittsfield, not Penfield. I've been away from the area for many years, and I forget the many little towns. Just for fun one day, I mapped out some of the areas where my friends had farms, and pulled up the ariel view. Couldn't recognize the areas any longer. Too many new homes and/or roads where once there were cow pastures. It made me sad. Thanks for the response! You are very welcome, Cathy. Photos have been taken. Good thing I went yesterday when it was warmer, a little sunny and no snow. This church is ten minutes from my home. I will send you the photos also but have to download them from my camera yet and make sure they are good enough quality to send you. Found out the congregation is now holding services at the Community Church in Chatham, Medina Co., OH, about 5 (maybe a little less) miles north of the fire site. My friend is a current member of the Brethren Church and I will find more info from her on the progress of any future building plans. Yes I am sending the photos to Carole. If anyone else on the list wants photos of this church please let me know via this list. Hi Patricia, I'm sorry; I don't have it. Was in my early twenties then and didn't have enough sense to save such things. Just now tried to Google it, but it's hard to find newspaper articles that old. Probably the victims' names would be important to you, and I tried to Google for them, too. So far, no luck and I have to leave for a vet appt. and some other errands. Will try again later, and maybe you'd like to, also. Good luck! Hi Cheryl, Thank you for suggesting that possibility, but the farm was still there after the tornado. I felt so bad to hear what your friend Judy and her family went through during the tornado. I am so sorry that her father died and hope very much that her mother recovered from her injuries. What a wonderful story about Judy's dog pulling her out of the rubble! Think the tornado leveled Pittsfield, but I don't know how much damage there was in Penfield. I was in my early twenties and living in California when we heard the tornado was heading your way. Tried all night long to call my family in Wellington, but couldn't get through. The Los Angeles Times carried the story of the tornado on the front page. The writer included in that front-page article the name of every victim in far-away Ohio. Although, I didn't know anyone personally, many of the family names were familiar to me. I was in high school, and my 4-H club volunteered to help with the cleanup. We were helping in Grafton, but my friend Judy lived in Penfield (or maybe Penfield Juction - are they the same?), I believe. (Having a brain-freeze here!) Her father was killed, mother severely injured, and her dog pulled her out of the rubble. All that was left standing for miles was the statue. I can't remember any more than that, but it could be why things don't look the same.
