    3. Gina, Apparently, one of the daughters, Florence Schmidt, died January 14, 1914 and is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Lorain. There was a death certificate written I'm going to order, Vol. #1271, Cert.# 3793. Also ran across a William Smith, who died September 5, 1913 in Lorain who might be the father, Vol. 1177, cert. 53335. If age corresponds with 1900 census (he was born about March 1866), this is probably him. If I get lucky and get my grandfather's BIRTH record for August 17, 1889 (William Louis Smith), I will be able to confirm or disprove my suspicions.. Thanks, Will ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gina Ashline" <ginasong1960@yahoo.com> To: <ohlorain@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 05, 2007 1:00 PM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] OHLORAIN Digest, Vol 2, Issue 66 >I did contact the Catholic Diocese for Lorain County, was going from >Elyria's actually, and the whole area is covered by the Diocese in >Cleveland. 3. I began with only ordering the pension files for my ancestors, but now I'm going back and ordering the military service records. The service record I received last week of my 2nd great-grandfather contained his birth date and birth place which the pension file did not and also gave a physical description of him (I just had a birth year from his tombstone). It also mentioned the name of his guardian. I had not been able to place him in the 1850 census, but with this new info, I located him in his county of birth and now have his possible mother and siblings to research and will be checking on a guardianship record for him to confirm his father. My motto is you can never have too much information on an ancestor. 2. Beth, The pension file costs more but has the most information. I have sent for 7 files and most of them were over an inch thick. Besides information I have been unable to find elsewhere, there were other clues in affidavits that led me to other family members, especially females. On-line ordering makes it very easy and the file comes in a reasonable amount of time. Per NARA: Pension Applications and Pension Payment Records: The National Archives also has pension applications and records of pension payments for veterans, their widows, and other heirs. The pension records in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. are based on service in the armed forces of the United States between 1775 and 1916. Pension application files usually provide the most genealogical information. These files often contain supporting documents such as: narratives of events during service, marriage certificates, birth records, death certificates, pages from family Bibles, family letters, depositions of witnesses, affidavits, discharge papers and other supporting papers Hope this helps, Richelle -----Original Message----- From: kazze@accnorwalk.com To: ohlorain@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 4 Mar 2007 8:42 PM Subject: [OHLORAIN] civil war records I am wondering - I have two types of forms for ordering civil war records. 3. I have been reading this thread with interest. I went ahead and went to the National Records site and ordered info on my dad and my brother. Then I printed out the form to order stuff on my grandfather. Now, a question.... do you think that if I include a copy of my grandfather's registration card with his order it will help? I do not know when he was discharged or where he served and I can only guess that it was Navy or Marines. He served in WW1 and he also helped to make the Panama Canal (which is another thing I wonder aobut, how do I get records on that?). So, if I include a copy of his registration card, will that help them to locate my grandfather's records? I am sending for the military service records as opposed to pension since all of these services occurred after 1900. When my Catholic ancestors moved to Erhart, Medina/Lorain Counties (Erhart crosses the county line), in 1840, their parish was St martin's in (now) Valley City, however, I'm quite certain that the Diocese was in Cincinnatti... 3. Hi Beth: Here's my 3 cents worth... The fact that your ancestor rec'd a military pension is crucial to what I'm abt to tell you...This Pension was a Veteran's Benefit....Therefore you are eligible to receive copies of his Veteran's Records (ie the complete packet) at no charge... and I just verified that with the local VA Office. Write a letter to your local VA Office...(& if you don't know where that is, phone 800 827-1000) Address it to Privacy Desk, Veterans Benefits, at the local address...Include all relevant information regarding that vet ..and VERY IMPORTANT...STATE HOW HE IS RELATED TO YOU...You must include information that will help them find the record and narrow down to his records --Usually via the National Records Center in St Louis, not the NARA...This info should/could include his full name, birth date, rank, place of enlistment, miltary unit or whatever, place of enlistment, place of retirement (Where they mailed the retirement checks); If he has a vet's monument you might want to include where he's buried), Widows name, when she was b and d., etc., etc. If you live near the local VA office, you could hand deliver it ..(mine is just 3 miles)... FYI this holds true for all vets who rec'd benefits such as pension, disabiltiy, education, etc... It's a benefit that they have passed on to you, their descendant. When I spoke with the VA I verified that I will be able to follow the same procedure to obtain veteran's records for one of my gr grandfathers who was one of this country's first marines (1775) and died as a result of capture 3 days after returning home in 1783 Wishing you great luck in your search shirley hulett, San Diego On Sun, 4 Mar 2007 20:42:06 -0500 "beth hunt" <kazze@accnorwalk.com> writes: > I am wondering - I have two types of forms for ordering civil war > records. 3. I did contact the Catholic Diocese for Lorain County, was going from Elyria's actually, and the whole area is covered by the Diocese in Cleveland. I don't know if that helps. You can find it pretty easily online, but I'll look it up too and see what I can come up with. Good luck. Gina Ashline ohlorain-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. 3. Military service records will be fairly brief, just info on when and where he enlisted, where he might have served, and when and where discharged. Pension records will be more detailed. One of my ancestors pension records was 82 pages. Statements from neighbors and friends, info from the undertaker who buried him and his first wife, statements from his second wife, some of his children, etc Can make interesting reading. Gary R. 3. Hi Nancy, I think I contacted you regarding this offer, but you said that you were so swamped with requests, and I honestly can't remember. As you know, my GrGf, Lawrence Daly is now a FF of Lorain County, and wife Mary Egan is a Settler. I've since found that we may have ties to Erie County in the area of Florence. I'd appreciate any DALY(ley, ailey, ayley, aily) info for Erie County that you see in your index . Page #s are fine, I'll go to a library for the rest. 1. [OHLORAIN] Obit lookups requested
    2. W. D. Smith
    3. I would be most grateful for Obit lookups on the following Augusta Smith's/Schmidt's who died Cuyahoga County. I do not have access to Ancestry. Sure wished I did, but they only accept credit cards, and I can't get one: Augusta Smith - died July 24, 1926 Augusta Schmidt - died December 10, 1922 Augusta Schmidt - died July 31, 1929 I suspect one of these three women may have been my great-grandmother. Thanks, Will Smith Tennessee

    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] Cavalry Catholic Cemetery - Black River Twp, Lorain
    2. W. D. Smith
    3. Extra note: After reading the obit y'all sent, I have determined this isn't the correct Augusta Schmidt, as mine was born 1863. This lady in the obit. was quite a bit older by at least 10 years, plus she was living elsewhere for the previous 50 + years - and not in Lorain. Apparently, mine were in Ward 2, which I assume was the Blackriver Twp, in 1900 - 1920. Since they were German, I would strongly suspect they were Catholic, so most likely in the Catholic cemetery there, or in the other church cemetery in that same township.. My grandfather was only 40 when he died, so it's looking like his parents and siblings didn't live long either, or else his mother and brother moved over to Cuyahoga County after 1920... Hope something will turn up on them. I appreciate all the help you've given! Thank you!
