My great-grandmother, Julia Grace SAGE, was born 12 Aug 1875 and according to census records her family resided in Brownhelm, Lorain Co. at the time of her birth. However, there is no record of her birth at the Lorain Co. Probate Court. Records have been check from 1867-1878. I was wondering if anyone know about delayed birth records for that time period. If so, where would I find them? Any suggestions, gratefully appreciated. Thank you, Terri Bates Black

My grandmother has been gone for several years, but I always asked questions about the family and never got a straight answer. My father died when I was 13, so when I started researching, I went to my aunt, she gave almost correct information but very limited. (I had a great aunt that lived in Lorain and never knew who she was!). But if you keep trying and trying, you will get the answers. I went from the wrong number of sibling coming to America, to incorrect names and spellings. It took me about three years, but I found the entire family, I had help in Hungary, but I found back to the 1700's. So ... To anyone researching and just can't get anywhere, put it aside and work on someone else, then go back and try again. Something just clicks and you say "well it could be" and then it all fits. I am very proud of my family and I work very hard to find any relative I could to link or double check what I had or thought I had. One of my best resources was the Lorain rootsweb, since they went from Ellis Island to Lorain. They lived and died in Lorain and to this day My Aunts and Uncles still live in Lorain County. It was my great grandparents and my great aunts and uncles that I could not find and most of it was because of misinformation, or general secrecy passed down. DON'T GIVE UP! To benefit our children and grandchildren, most of us continue to do research on the families of former spouses. My former sister-in-law had been missing for 60 years. Recently when she was diagnosed with cancer in CA, her only daughter, age 58, who lived in yet another western state, decided to try to find relatives in the east where her mother had been born. My former sister-in-law did get to see her brother (my former husband of 25 yrs.) for a few hours before she died. Sadly at age 16, she ran away and had cut herself off from everyone in 1946. Her own mother died the following year in 1947 after being in a TB sanitarium for 6 years. She and her two siblings had been made wards of the court. Thru the years, following every possible clue, I tried in many ways, as well as spending a size-able sum of money, 1966-1993 to locate her. What tangled webs we humans weave. Do not give up on your research! Nancy
Just adding a little note from "experience"! Don't dare park for more than two hours unless they have changed the rules at that lot. Another friend and I went to the County Auditor's office and used that lot. When you pull in off Third St. there is a sign that says two hour parking (which can be unnoticed in the rush to get out of the traffic). When you do get in there, there are several parking places which face Middle Ave. They all say 4 hour parking. Well, we came out in exactly 2 hours and 20 mins, only to find that her new Trail Blazer had been towed, to the tune of $90. Watch the signs, you people. Downtown Elyria is all one way streets, so be careful. There is unmetered street parking, but it's at a premium. Don't park in a lot if you don't have to. I parked in one of those 2 hour lots, and wasn't ticketed, even though I was there for 3 hours, but it was an incredibly freezing day, on which few people were out. It seems that you have everything you need, with having the numbers ahead of time. If you name has alternate spellings, you should probably key those in also, and get additional numbers. If you get there and need to look up other numbers, they have computer files the same as you'd lookup on their site. It seems that the fee is less than 50cents per page (I was just there a month ago, but don't really remember the fee. They take checks with photo id, not credit cards, and of course cash is okay. The records are on microfilm. You go in with your numbers, and the ladies will show you where those films are kept and how to use the machine. Try to get the machine closest to the filing cabinets, it has a better lense attached. The ladies can also put on a different lens, which will bring you closer to one particular item, if you need it. I find it's more time-effective to make the copy, and then if you feel the need for enlarged text, to take it to a copy service, like kinkos. The copies are generally readable, if not ask the ladies for help. I have one document that no one can read or copy due to poor film quality, but that's the exception rather than the rule. I end up spending a lot of time there, when photocopying wills. They tend to mention other names in the area and family members, so I always end up doing additional research when there. Happy Hunting. Patricia Peg and Ron <rv64@lor.net> wrote: Just adding a little note from "experience"! Don't dare park for more than two hours unless they have changed the rules at that lot. I just did a quick check of Cyndi's List at http://www.cyndislist.com/canals.htm#Panama and there are a lot of links to help in research, including where to send for vital records. Hope this helps someone. Cheryl
Hi Mary Anne: I recently made a trip to the Probate Court with a friend who needed a copy of a will. It was a great experience and the gals there were extremely helpful. The cost was minimal as I remember. Maybe a couple of dollars, if that. I don't know if we hit it on a light day, but it was very quick and easy. There is a new Justice Center in downtown Elyria on Court Street on the corner of Third and Court as I remember. Seems like it was on the sixth floor, but there is an information desk when you enter and there is a security center that you have to go through. All in all, we were surprised how easy the trip turned out to be......... Dear List, Has anyone gone to the Probate Court to look at records? Could you tell me about the experience? What can I bring? Do I need money (cash)? What should I do ahead of time, other than look at the online information? Where are the records located? Are they on micro-film or what? Thanks, Mary Anne

Sande, I understand that he was not an immigrant, and neither were the ones that I found. But the link "immigration" on Ancestry will take you to passenger records. Sorry if I wasn't clear on that. The passenger records for the Port of New Orleans showed where in the Canal Zone they had lived, and what their destination in the US was. In my case, they were enroute to the man's mother's house in NY, and it gave the address. It also had the wife's maiden name. It was a bonanza of information for me - birth dates and places, etc. And, if you find his record (he had to get to the US somehow), you might have something to work with. I hope you find something.... good luck! Sande, Have you checked out the immigration records on Ancestry? I found people coming back from the Canal Zone with their families that I didn't even know had worked there. That gave me important information as to relatives' addresses and names. It's worth checking! Hi Alice, Maybe this is why the books from the 1800s are still in good condition. Wood pulp papers disintegrate over time and the Library of Congress has a lot of them going to pieces. Bits of paper all over the floor where the books are kept in storage racks. The older books made with rag pulp have lasted very well. Tom Powell History Using wood to make paper is a fairly recent innovation. In the 1800s, _fiber crops_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_crop) such as _linen_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linen) fibres were the primary material source, but a shortage led to contemporaries as _dime novels_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dime_novel) or _penny dreadfuls_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Dreadful) . I also have books from the 1800's that are still in good shape! I was taught "take care of something and it will last a long time" so I do and it does. The printer worked from my CD of the history. It came out GREAT, almost the quality of the original work. The local printer had a laser machine and he used the best paper he had available at the time - don't recall if it was rag or wood fiber. It wasn't the real heavy glossy photo paper. Also used a plastic spiral to bind the sheets. Been over five years ago and the cost was about $1.00 per page.
