    2. Richard Gibson
    3. Just a slight correction, a knot is a unit of speed, not distance. One knot is one nautical mile per hour. Officially the international nautical mile (nm) is exactly 1.852 km. A nautical mile is the apx. length of one minute of arc along the earth's surface. So, one degree of arc, for example along the equator, is apx. 60 nm (but actually a little more). Ships and airplane regularly use knots & nautical miles.

    3. It was very early this morning that I wrote my answer and I hope you mathematicians caught the error I made. Yes, a knot is a term in nautical mileage, and, yes, it is the same length as a nautical mile. The length of the nautical mile, or knot, is 6,076.10 feet. I had inadvertently put a period after both of the sixes. The punction mark after the first six should be a comma and NOT a period. If you've ever been out to sea on an ocean liner, you are told daily how fast the ship is traveling, and this is almost always in knots per hour. A common speed seems to be about 20 knots per hour. (I research Gilchrist, Henderson, McNeilly) This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. Maybe you will see fit to send this to whomever you can. It is long, but well worth the read...at least to me. TRIBUTE TO AMERICA Widespread, but only partial news coverage has been given to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks, as printed in the Congressional Record: America: The Good Neighbor "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous, and perhaps least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan, and to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war be the Americans, who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This Spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are a writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating ove the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC-10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco Earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their noses at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America. ==== NYDELAWA Mailing List ==== Have you visited the Delaware County NYGenWeb Site lately? http://www.rootsweb.com/~nydelawa ============================== Visit Ancestry's Library - The best collection of family history learning and how-to articles on the Internet. http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library ------=_NextPart_000_0012_01C13DC5.FA54D600--

    3. I don't know for certain but I have seen a wooden yarn winder that had four arms that held the yarn after it was spun...one wind around was two yards and forty turns was a "knot"....I suppose this COULD be related to the nautical term but I am not able to verify that either. I was told that 20 knots in a day was a good days worth of spinning and that once you removed the "knot" from the winder it would fold in on itself in a manageable twist....think of a "skein" of yarn today.

Mike, who is an attorney in NYC, has just taken his daughter into her kindergarten school this morning. He was waiting on the corner to cross the street and walk the five blocks to work. He actually witnessed the horrific morning event. He ran back into the school, gathered up his 5 year old his daughter & spent rest of the afternoon trying to find his wife who works in the legal dept. of a bank, another few blocks away. Their brand new condo in downtown Manhattan is not accessible to them, so they have no home to go to this evening, his new mini van that was parked across the street from the Towers is gone, he has no office to go to tomorrow, but he is safe. 1. [OHLORAIN] Re: National Genealogical Society Library Closed
    2. Byron Bray
    3. Friends, Mail has been circulating, for the last few days, regarding the rumored disposal and dismantling of the National Genealogical Society's library. This morning, I received this letter from Cyndi Howells: -.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.- Hi all - As a member of the board for the National Genealogical Society, I am happy to say that the *rumors are not accurate*. Unfortunately news got out, without all the facts, before we had an opportuntity to make an official announcement. We have some very exciting, progressive plans for the NGS Library collection and a partnership with the St. Louis County Public Library. However, we had hoped to make a big splash with an announcement at the upcoming FGS conference in Iowa this week. Our President, Curt Witcher, has put together a presentation to announce the details, so I hate to steal his thunder. Suffice it to say this -- the books have NOT been sold. The library is not closing -- the book lending function is merely moving (and has not been moved yet). The reference library (manuscript collection, MAC files, etc.) remain at NGS headquarters. The plan we have *expands* benefits to our members, as well as the general public. This is a wonderful time of growth for us and we are all very excited about it. We will have a press release to send out next week, to make everything official. Stay tuned! Please be sure to pass on this note to reassure others that have received the same mis-information. Thanks for your interest in the NGS, Cyndi Howells NGS, Director at Large -.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.- Regards, Byron Bray Proud Rootsweb Donor President, Linn Genealogical Society Linn County, Oregon e-mail: general@linnhistory.peak.org webmaster LGS website: www.rootsweb.com/~orlinngs/ ICQ number: 8223914 AIM handle: Byroji Listowner: BOVEE-L list (Bovee-L@rootsweb.com) COVERT-L list (Covert-L@rootsweb.com) VanAkin-L list (VanAkin-L@rootsweb.com) Researching: BOVEE, BOICE, BRAY, CARD, FLAGLER, FULLER, GRANT, HASKINS, SIMPSON, VAN AUKEN, WALKER

    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] Huntington Church Records
    2. Byron Bray
    3. > I haven't offered a temporary lookup in a long time. > This time it is for the HUNTINGTON CHURCH RECORDS. Dear Nancy, Thanks for your generous offer and, indeed, for all of your work on the Lorain County site. As the webmaster for the Linn Genealogical Society site in Linn county, Oregon, I know how much work it is; your efforts are appreciated!! -.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.-:*'``'*:-.,,_,.- I am at a brick wall and perhaps these church records can help me break through it. My GG-Grandfather, Henry Alfred BRAY was born in Connecticut in 1825 and lived most of his life in Connecticut and Michigan (as far as I know). What brought me to the Lorain county list was the fact that, in our family bible, his son, (my G-Grandfather) Alfred Francis BRAY is listed as having been born in "Huntington, Lorain County, Ohio - January 7, 1853". Later, I found an obit for Henry Alfred BRAY in the Charlotte Republican (Charlotte, Eaton county, Michigan - December 15, 1911) which states that; "He was married at the age of 23 years to Caroline J. Fuller of Ohio, where he lived at the time." This would have placed the marriage event in 1848 (give or take a year). The obit also states that; "Mr. Bray united with the U. B. church when 20 years of age and has been an ordained minister, but has preached and was ever ready to do what he could to spread the gospel." Since vital records are not recorded, in Ohio, until 1857, I have been unable to find anything regarding the marriage of Henry Alfred BRAY and Caroline J. FULLER, nor any record of the birth of their son, Alfred Francis BRAY (or any other children). These remarks in the obit lead me to suspect that he may have been a church member or even a minister during the time that he (may have) lived in Lorain county and I am hopeful that these records may substantiate or refute that suspicion. I would very much appreciate a look-up of these records and would be happy to repay you in kind (if you have any Oregon connections I can help you with), as well as covering any costs you may incur in this process. If they are not found, please let me know if you can think of any other places I might seek information on this Lorain county connection. I am sending a copy of this letter to the list so that, if there are any others who know anything about these people or who are working on these lines, we can connect. Thanks Again, Byron Bray Proud Rootsweb Donor President, Linn Genealogical Society Linn County, Oregon e-mail: general@linnhistory.peak.org webmaster LGS website: www.rootsweb.com/~orlinngs/ ICQ number: 8223914 AIM handle: Byroji Listowner: BOVEE-L list (Bovee-L@rootsweb.com) COVERT-L list (Covert-L@rootsweb.com) VanAkin-L list (VanAkin-L@rootsweb.com) Researching: BOVEE, BOICE, BRAY, CARD, FLAGLER, FULLER, GRANT, HASKINS, SIMPSON, VAN AUKEN, WALKER
