    1. [OHLORAIN] Roll Call
    2. Anna Hanson
    3. My Lorain County names are: Henry SHORT, married to Elizabeth MILLER, both of Kurhessen, Germany; their son Henry Jr. was born 1857 in Amherst. Also had sons John, Charles Frederick, and Peter, and daughters Katherine and M? something (or possibly Emma). Henry Jr. married Augusta WARDESKA. Their son Herman Albert SHORT married Anna Marie WEBER, in 1919 in Amherst. Anna's parents were William WEBER, from Vincennes, Indiana, and Catherine KOEPKE (both born 1876). Catherine's parents were Karl KOEPKE and Elizabeth WERNER. Karl was from Teschendorf, Mechlenburg-Strelitz, Germany; son of Johann KOEPKE and Anna HINTZ, (b. about 1815's) Names connected to these lines by marriage: BLOOM, COOLEY, GRAY, MARTIN, WILLIAMS, STARK, KREEGER, and I'm sure many others I'm forgetting. I made a visit to Amherst this past June, and met Orville Manes, among the other wonderful folks at your History library; I wish I'd been able to spend more time there, but my uncle was not as "into" this as I am, so we had to go. We had a lot of fun taking a tour of places he remembered from his "hey day", and we began teasing him about all the girls he used to date. It was fun, and all too brief. I do plan to come back and delve more deeply into the files! Just have to let time, money and opportunity collide. Anna Hanson

    3. Who is Samuel G. BALDWIN?? He is NOT mentioned in the 1878 will of John BRASIE of Lorain County, OH, but is listed on a 'Next of Kin' distribution form for probate as as 'son' (with 'Brasie' inserted between his first and last name) in 1891. He had not been on previous census records and the recorded children bear the BRASIE/BRAZEE name. His name comes after the birth order of his natural children, but before the one grandchild that is listed to inherit. Possible step-son of: John BRASIE (1816 NY -1891 OH) m (1) Almira LAMBERT (1823-1862) 1842 in Elyria, Lorain Co., Ohio; m (2) Julia BRENT 1864 Lorain Co., Ohio. Is Julia BRENT his mother? He is mentioned as living on St. Clair in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1876 and 1891. Any information or any thoughts on this?

    1. [OHLORAIN] Medina Co. [Ohio] Pioneers, Surname H
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, This is an "I-thought-you'd-like-to-know" message. :) I just found out about a new book, "Medina Co. [Ohio] Pioneers, Surname H," that's supposed to be published by Clossen Press sometime in the next 6 months, hopefully January. (An exact publishing date can't be given because of the 11 September attack causing the publisher to get backed up.) It was compiled by Beverly Teibel and will cost about $24.00 plus $4 shipping and handling. Clossen is taking advance orders now. A friend sent me a copy of the index and one of the pages from the book. If you're looking for someone from Medina County, Ohio and the surname begins with the letter 'H', then this is one you're probably going to want to get. [And just for the record ... no, I have absolutely nothing to do with this book, its compilation or publication, nor Clossen Press.] Following are a few chapter headings listed in the index [keep in mind they're all for Medina County, OH and surnamed 'H': Newspaper articles 1850-1906 Inscription from Westfield Cemetery Common Pleas Court records Obituaries Marriages Cemeteries Real estate transfers Pre-1850 marriages Chatham Township vital records [birth, death, church] If you think you might be interested, here's how to contact Clossen Press: Clossen Press R.D. 2, Box 373-A Apollo, PA 15613 I don't have their phone number, but someone else here might. If you have questions about the book past what I've already related, I'm afraid I can't help you. Like I said earlier, I have nothing to do with the book other than the fact that I found out about it and thought you'd all like to know as well. I wish you all a weekend filled with inner peace and contentment. Colleen

    2. I am researching the RAVENS family. The 1860 Ohio census (page 293?) shows the family living in Black River Township with the family consisting of Henry and Julia with children Adam and Rosetta. Rose married John Franklin WIRTH on January 6, 1874 and was my Gr grandmother. I have good information on Rose and Julia from that point on. Can anyone help trace Henry and Adam from 1860 and provide information on Henry's and Julia's genealogy prior to 1860?

    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] Social Security look up.
    2. SR
    3. Penny, SSN's beginning with 900-999 are not valid SSN's but were used for program purposes when state aid to the aged, blind and disabled was converted a to federal program. I know you said that this was a place of residence code, but they often used the beginning SSN numbers to show place of residence or last place a SS check was sent. SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER: The first three numbers of the SSN indicate the state where the application for an SSN was made. This can help you find out where your ancestor lived when the card was issued. If the SSN was issued prior to 1972, the first three numbers of the SSN would indicate the state where the person applied for the card. This did not necessarily have to be the State where the applicant lived, since a person could apply for their card in any Social Security office. About 1973 the first three numbers were assigned according to the zip code of the mailing address shown on the SSN application. This can help you determine in what state your ancestor was living when they applied for the SSN and thereby help you to locate them in a Census record. Here is a list of the states and their assigned 3 letter codes: 001-003 NH 004-007 ME 008-009 VT 010-034 MA 035-039 RI 040-049 CT 050-134 NY 135-158 NJ 159-211 PA 212-220 MD 221-222 DE 223-231 VA (691-699) 232-236 WV 237-246 NC (232 & 681-690) 247-251 SC (654-658) 252-260 GA (667-675) 261-267 FL (589-595) 268-302 OH 303-317 IN 318-361 IL 362-386 MI 387-399 WI 400-407 KY 408-415 TN (756-763) 416-424 AL 425-428 MS(587& 588 & 752-755) 429-432 AR (676-679) 433-439 LA(659-665) 440-448 OK 449-467 TX (627-645) 468-477 MN 478-485 IA 486-500 MO 501-502 ND 503-504 SD 505-508 NE 509-515 KS 516-517 MT 518-519 ID 520 WY 521-524 CO(650-653) 525 & 585 NM (648-649) 526-527 AZ (600-601) 528-529 UT (646-647) 530 NV (680) 531-539 WA 540-544 OR 545-573 CA (602-626) 574 AK 575-576 HI 577-579 DC 580 VI Virgin Islands 581-584 PR Puerto Rico (596-599) 586 Guam 586 American Samoa 586 Philippine Islands 700-728 Railroad Retirement Board SSN's beginning with 900-999 are not valid SSN's but were used for program purposes when state aid to the aged, blind and disabled was converted a to federal program. 3. LC Researchers, While going thru some more of my old files, I cam across a list of baptisms from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wellington Ohio. These records were abstracted in 1971, by the late Anne Glendening and had been published in the quarterly OGS REPORT in 1984 & 1986. Anne was the 1st President of the Lorain Co. Chapter of OGS and a charter member of the Wellington Genealogical Group, fka Wellington Genealogical Workshop that started in the 1970's and is still active. Dates of the baptisms are 1889 to 1933 only. Includes many Italian names. 1. [OHLORAIN] DAR and First Families
    2. This is interesting topic for me as I just submitted for FF of Lorain Co. and am new member of DAR. Why join either? Pride that my ancestors were involved in early development of an area or event, and it is a way to honor their accomplishments. DAR is also a service organization as well as social organization. Basicially, DAR presents programs both to members and out in the community that stress citizenship values, educate about local and national history and preservation topics, and encourage volunteerism and service to the community. Specific projects are adopted to carry-out these focus areas. We know we have reputation for being elderly group of women, doing genteel things, but we are changing. Our chapter has wide age range from young 30s with children on up, and members in diverse occupations. Sarah

    2. One interesting thing I found in an old list of DAR inductees was a notation that the person's ancestor had harbored Gen Lafayettee. I think anything an ancestor did to further the Rev. qualifies you-you don't simply have tohave someone who served in the military. Mary
