    3. I have to applaud Nancy! She is a busy and productive volunteer for Lorain County. If anyone else is interested in volunteering for the SONS of UNION VETERANS of the CIVIL WAR project and live in or near Lorain County, Burt Nesbitt has 9 cemeteries left that need to have CW Veterans grave sites visited, just as Nancy is doing at Garfield Cemetery. We already have a list of burials, but we need to note the condition of the site. Cemeteries still needing visits are Camden Twp, Columbia Twp (2), Eaton's Butternut Ridge, Penfield, Pittsfield, and three in Rochester Twp. We still have some nice weather left I hope! Email me if you are interested in helping with this project and I will put you on touch with Burt. mailto:sstrick@centurytel.net Thanks! 1. [OHLORAIN] Garfield Cemetery in Sheffield Twp.
    2. NM Meyers
    3. LC Researchers, If you have ancestors buried in the Garfield Cemetery, you might benefit from knowing that the actual records that are in the township hall only go back to 1908. Browsed thru those today. The whereabouts of the burial records previous to 1908 are unknown to anyone. However, in the Sheffield Township Hall, there is a very old map of the original lot owners. Of course it does not list all of those who are buried in these lots. Some of the older markers are now unreadable & a few vandalized, which makes the 1980 cemetery inscription book even more valuable. This is one of the cemeteries I had volunteered to work on for the National Organization named SONS of UNION VETERANS of the CIVIL WAR. The project includes locating and evaluating the condition of the grave markers of Civil War Veterans. Burt Nesbitt, a LC Chapter member, is charge of the CW grave marker project for this County. BTW, Burt's son Mark has written books about the ghostly accounts of Civil War and has also produced some videos on the subject. Check your local library. Needless to say, I always enjoy spending an afternoon in any cemetery. Took my lunch with me, and would you believe that it was 61 degrees out on this November 15th. -- Nancy M. 1. [OHLORAIN] Veteran's Message
    2. This seems to be very appropriate for the 12th of Nov. What an awesome message! Jean TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS." THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable..... PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed.

    1. [OHLORAIN] Freeholder list
    2. NM Meyers
    3. The Atlas and Freeholder Directory of Lorain county Ohio was published in 1896. It includes plat maps and the land owners. The property owners are listed in alphabetical order, by each separate township and village, at the back of the book. While on the atlas itself, there is simply not enough room to show who the owner is of each individual small village lot. They are on the freeholder list however. Renters or those who leased land are not listed. There is also included, some bios and photos of some county business men. -- Nancy M. 1. [OHLORAIN] Crown Hill Veteran
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Anna, Your directions were perfect & so we visited the site of your Grandpa Herman Short this AM shortly before church. Placed a flag & a pot of geraniums at his marker & took a couple of photos. Photos are automatically marked with time & date. I am unable to find your address on a membership list for any of the LC genealogy or historical groups, so please email me privately with you address & we will gladly send you the pictures. You will probably see some changes the next time you visit Crown HIll cemetery as they are preparing to take down that huge tree near the Koepke marker. This morning there did not appear to have been any activity at that cemetery, as far as placing flags on Veteran's graves. Although there were a few flags that seemed to have placed there by family members. Most Veteran's Day Activities are taking place today, at least here in the city of Lorain. -- Nancy M.
