    3. Christmas time brought a lot of memories to my father Wells CLAY (1911-1960). Many happened in his family around Dec. 25th. His parents, natives of JoDaviess Co.IL wed in December 1896 at Stockton IL. They had had 8 children, & with one living but a few hours. They farmed 125 acres Pleasant Valley Twp. On December 26, 1906 they moved to Brown Co. SD, to take over & run a livery business for an older relative & also had 5 acres for a milk cow & a garden. On Dec. 24, 1910 they were forced to return to IL because my grandfather had a heart attack and was no longer able to do manual labor. Their 15 month old daughter died just six days later on Dec. 30th. They leased & ran a small general store in Zion Grove of Woodland Twp. Carroll Co. IL Grandpa felt he could manage & direct activities from his chair. Even that became too much when Grandpa had a second attack became bedridden. Grandma decided to close the store, after business on Christmas Eve day in 1920. The two oldest daughters were married by now & a 3rd worked out on "confinement cases". The family moved to Savanna IL (on the Mississippi River) where there were doctors and an chance to earn a living in some way for her family. Later that evening, after closing the business for good, the children were allowed to select a gift for themselves from any of the merchandise that was left in stock. My father remembers picking out a pocket knife & a pair of work shoes that were about three sizes too big. (he stuffed rags in the toes) His sisters chose yards goods for themselves. The family moved into an old house in Savanna IL. With four rooms down & two up, she converted the two front rooms into a public lunch room, that she named the Cottage Inn. Grandpa's invalid bed was in a 3rd room next to the kitchen where Grandma cooked. That is where my father learned to be such a good cook & baker. Grandpa died there on December 25, 1927. Grandma kept the Cottage Inn until December 24, 1930 when she was remarried to one of her regular lunch customers. A bachelor, 10 yrs her junior, a Capt. in the USA, having been stationed at the Proving Grounds in Savanna after he returned from China in 1920's. He was being transferred to Selfridge Field MI and did not want to leave this lady behind. The day after Christmas in 1930, my paternal grandma moved to MI with her new husband, my father & his brother six years younger. That is how I came to be born in MI. I now understand, in part, why my father always seemed to be so melancholy at Christmas time. He never had a Christmas tree until he was married himself.

    2. Growing up, I had a very dear older "cousin" that was the closest thing I had in my family to a storyteller. She was a very special lady in my life for many many years. Lela Johnson Burge was born in Huntington, OH on a very cold December morning in 1894. She died in the year 2000 at the tender age of 105 1/2 - 3 months short of turning 106. Her Christmas memories were of growing up and going to school in Wellington and going to her friend's homes for Christmas parties. They would have ice skating parties at the local ponds. Her Christmas presents were something homemade or something small. Maybe an orange in her stocking and a handful of walnuts or pecans. They would put homemade bows on the tree and make popcorn and cranberry chains. They enjoyed their Holidays by sharing time with their friends and by attending church services. There wasn't the commercialism of today. Lela had many stories to tell and I was fortunate enough to have my sister tape record many of those stories for me. For Lela's 100th birthday I put together a booklet of some of her memories and newspaper articles to go along with her own memories. After she passed away I was able to get the book back again. Now, who has another story? Margaret Cheney Merry Christmas to All..........

    3. Dear Fellow researchers, Yes, it is a less than happy holiday season for many on this list. This very day, some suffer with grief, or incurable illnesses, or estrangement from family and/or friends. In some cases an unexplainable and unbearable sadness. So after you try to turn those painful matters over to your Higher Power.......let us just reach out and touch one another by sharing the most memorable holiday time that your oldest relative or friend or ever told you about. Try to paint for us, a verbal picture as best you can. Remember to include those four genealogy basics....Who, What, Where & When. TTYL -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    1. [OHLORAIN] Schneck/James PIERCE
    2. Gary Nervig
    3. Hello-- I have been reading some on your James PIERCE emails. My Pierce family was in Huntington twp by 1833-36 and left about 1855-60 for Clinton Co., MI. One son, my gg.grandfather Wareham Pierce, then went on to MN. I have been up against a brick wall for 10 years trying to find Wareham Pierce's father's history--his name was Reuben Pierce--so I know how frustrating things can be. I believe Reuben may have had a brother/s, Charles and/or Frances, that also moved to Lorain Co. at some point, but I have not been able to come up with information on either name! I have all of Reuben's children/grandchildren so know you are not related in my particular family. If you should ever manage to get back farther and end up with any VT connections [he was m. there and verbal history says he was b. there] I'd sure like to hear from you! There is one other Pierce family that I am aware of who were prominent in Lorain Co. but I have not been able to connect them to my Pierce's. I believe they are written up in one of the History books of Lorain Co. and if you go to the Lorain Co. web page you may find very kind, helpful "Look-up" Volunteers to check a name or two out for you if you haven't tried that route already. I know there are lots of old newspapers in Lorain County on microfilm but I believe they are not name indexed. I have gotten So Much information from newspapers so maybe, since you have birth, marriage, and death dates you [or a paid researcher or a volunteer] could look for articles. Another set of my GG.Grandparents [in 1893 IA] had each guest listed along with each gift in their wedding article and they were just poor farmers, not the elite in town...we figured out several "new" relatives just from that one article! Plus, in IL I found little death and birth notices that were just 1 or 2 sentences, but birth info would Always include the name of the parent. Don't give up and Good Hunting...I have decided the Pierce family is the most elusive one I could have ever been lucky enough to descend from! Jo Ellen in MI

    3. Hi again Sarah, It would make my life much easier if James Samuel PIERCE had brothers or sisters. Unfortunately, as far as I know, he was an only child. Since you have been so kind to share your thoughts and suggestions with me so far, I will go out on a limb here and tell you the rest of the story in the hope you might come up with something I haven't. What I know about James Samuel PIERCE: Born: 24 March 1872 in Elyria, Lorain County, OH. Mother: Ann GILMORE/GILMOUR---Born in Scotland to John and Ann/Anne (CHALMERS) GILMORE/GILMOUR Lived: With his mother and/or grandfather in Waukesha County, WI and attended school there Married: Helen/Nellie Storke/Stroke Gowans in the Town of Lisbon, Waukesha County, WI on the 24 Feb. 1897 Children: 5 boys--2 died, one at birth and the other when he was young Moved: 1905 to Taylor County, WI Died: 10 August 1958 in Taylor County, WI Other information (to be confirmed) about James Samuel PIERCE: Father: *last name PIERCE *lived in Chicago, IL and owned a saddle shop, harness shop, or blacksmith shop *traveled to Peshtigo, WI to do logging *married Ann GILMORE/GILMOUR sometime between 1870 and 1871? *died in either the Chicago fire or Peshtigo fire in October 1871 Mother: * Lived and grew up in Waukesha County, WI * Gave birth in OH, and lived there? until she returned to Waukesha County WI in 1875 Do you know where I could access the OH census index and OH census or do you know the LDS fiche/film numbers? Thanks again for you input! Lorrie Schneck@charter.net ----- Reply ----- Tuesday, December 18, 2001 6:04 PM Strange about "Elyna". I've seen that in census indexes, and just figured it was transcribing mistake. If the funeral book has names of attendees, then I would certainly try to trace some of those people--not sure how much you know about him, like brothers and sisters. If you know them, then go after THIER death certificates, and one may say the father, and even the father's place of birth, etc. assuming the certificate would be from maybe 1909 or later. Sarah ------Message------ 12/18/2001 6:26:39 PM Eastern Standard Time It states he was born in "Elyna, OH". When I looked for the name "Elyna", I came up with nothing. I decided that the "n" should have been an "ri". I also have the memorial book from his funeral which states his place of birth as "Elyria".

    3. Thank you Sarah for your advice! I already have a copy of his death certificate. It states he was born in "Elyna, OH". When I looked for the name "Elyna", I came up with nothing. I decided that the "n" should have been an "ri". I also have the memorial book from his funeral which states his place of birth as "Elyria". What I am hoping to find on his birth certificate is his father's name and place of birth (not given on his death certificate). With this information I then can continue to trace my PIERCE family. Without it, I am stuck. Any additional ideas, resources,........? I would appreciate ANY advice!!!!!!!!! Thank you! Lorrie Schneck@charter.net ----- Original Message ----- Dated 11/30/2001 10:09:14 AM Eastern Standard Time My ggrandfather, James Samuel PIERCE, was born in Elyria 24 March 1872. However, when I studied the LDS births film I was unable to find him listed. Finding his birth information is the key to my PIERCE family research. I am trying to climb an enormous brick wall and making no progress. If you are able to help me in any way (suggestions, advice, requested information, leads.....) I would be extremely grateful! -------------Reply------------ Tuesday, December 18, 2001 4:19 PM Have you tried going at it from the other end--the death certificate? You may find he was actually born at a different location. Just an idea. Sarah

Genealogy list, but because of a virus, I haveno messages left in my computer to do a reply all to. I just wanted to stress something Ifeel is important. My husband is doing the transcribing for the Wakeman Library, working with Claudia to get all of their genealogy information up on the Wakeman Library website. Claudia posted an e-mail to the list asking for support for this project. The Library is considering stopping this which I feel would be a great disservice to thisand surrounding communities. Many of my ancestors came from Lorain County to settle in Huron County. Many of the names people are researching show up in both counties. When Claudia ask the list for help, she got 17 replies, yet when we post a newbook to the site, she will get 300 hits in one day. Please pass this on to the list! We need your support to keep this site going! We havemany more wonderful ideas and memorabilia to put up! I want you to know I have met five or six people that have turned out to be cousins (from all over the US) using the Lorain Co. site. Please keep up the great work. Thanks. Linda (Beam) Dunlap

    3. The discussion on this issue has started to appear on a few other mail lists I subscribe to. Opinions have been varied, both for and against the removal of the indexes. I don't wish to get into the for and against discussion, but rather to point out, what IMHO, is the obvious. Especially since most of the opinions expressed to date on all lists, do not appear to come from residents of either CA or TX. If you are not a registered voter in the jurisdiction which is served by the elected official to whom you send your opinion on this issue, what ever you have to say will likely fall on deaf ears. The only possible argument which might make a difference is money. Will the revenue of the jurisdiction which issues the certificates, located by use of these indexes, be affected? If you are not a registered voter of the jurisdiction, then the people who you need to convince, be you for or against removal of the indexes, are the registered voters of the appropriate jurisdiction. At least if I were an elected official, the opinion of one voter in my jurisdiction would outweigh 100 plus, sent by people outside my jurisdiction. Donna ****************************** Donna J. 3. I may be in the minority, but I think it was right for California to remove the info containing social security #'s from the internet. When I first accessed that info over a year ago, I was appalled that they would put social security numbers of living people on any list that was accessible to the public. There is just too much chance of identity theft (as well as a living person's right to privacy). Yes, it's too bad we don't have access 'cause we've all gotten used to easy access to all sorts of records, but I for one, think it should have never been put online in the first place. ----- Original Message ----- From: <MMBoehn@aol.com> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 08, 2001 8:49 PM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] What is your opinion?
