    1. [OHLORAIN] Steel Mill Employee's financial aid
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Steel Mill Employee's aid in 1924…. Lots of original reports, telegrams and correspondence from The National Tube Co. covering years 1924-1926 were recently donated to the Black River Historical Society. I was so excited to find names of ordinary working men listed. The National Tube Co., with headquarters in Pittsburgh PA, was asked in 1924 by Lorain's Mayor to help their employees in the Lorain area who had sustained losses due to the tornado. These pages of lists contain names of over four hundred men who filed loss claims along with their street addresses. An added plus for researchers, in many cases, the occupation title and number of year employed by the National Tube Company. is given. Their claim amounts are listed and the amount of recommended percentage of financial relief is also listed. This effort was coordinated in part by the Red Cross. Some claims were denied. Until January 31st, I will be happy to look for your steel mill ancestor. Can do this only if you PLEASE include a first & last name. Do not want to overflow this genealogy electronic list so please send your request mailto:nmmeyers@centurytel.net -- Nancy M. 1. [OHLORAIN] Catholic Slovak Ladies Union
    2. Carl J. Jasinto
    3. I picked up a book - year book type - at Jamies Flea Market the other day, entitled : "50 Years - The First Catholic Slovak Union of The USA" Inside face page states: "The Golden Jubilee Book. In commemoration of Fifty Years of Loyal Service. The Catholic Slovak Women of America. Published by The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union 3756 Lee Road Cleveland, Ohio July 1942" Its in Slovakian apparently. There is a Xeroxed map of Cleveland's Calvary Cemetery with 2 locations marked on it. Also contain is some newspaper articles about John Hvasta's escape from behind the Iron Curtain. Also had a velum(?) membership application from 1913 or 43??? In Slovakian and a little English. There is water damage to it but it is usable. Loaded with pictures, names, etc. Yours for the price I paid for it - $1.00. I have no use for it, but thought of this list when I saw it, plus it was a bargain! E-mail me back if interested. Carl J. 1. [OHLORAIN] Hitchcock/Seekins Pension Papers
    2. schirado
    3. Pension papers are wonderful resources for Family History. I sent away for a pension record for Lousia L. Hitchcock, wife of Frederick Hitchcock, who served in Company A, 150th OVI. While I am looking for information on a Frederick, mine has parents of Jabez Hitchcock and Lovina Unknown. This Frederick's parents are Lucius and Strelman(?). Frederick died 20 March 1874 in Cleveland at the age of 45. He was married to Lousia L. Seekins, 20 January 1853 in Elyria. I would be happy to make copies for anyone doing research with these people. Bobbi in Sparta, MI

    1. [OHLORAIN] Lady Macabees
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Lady Macabees.... Abstracted this from a copy of an old newspaper article last night at the AHS meeting. It is possession of Mr. Roth who owns an actual stamping "seal" of the Macabees. ...."The Mystic Hive No.12 of the Lady Macabees of the World was organized on February 10, 1893. The meeting was organized by Lady LUSTER of North Ridgeville and held at Plato Hall. Charter members in are: Lady BOUGHTON, Lady DUTE, Lady EARLY, Lady BARBER,Lady BEMIS, Lady PATERSON, Lady SCHILLER, Lady CHANLER, Lady HULBERT, Lady SANDERS, Lady NICHOL, Lady LINN, Lady LINN, Lady BELDEN, Lady CORNWALL. Dr. N. CORNWALL was elected medical examiner".... -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    1. [OHLORAIN] Quarries
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Quarries of LC seems to have generates a lot of interest. A Mr. Brown of the Cleveland Metro Parks system, is the scheduled speaker for Quarries program at the February 27, 2002 meeting of the Amherst Historical Society. Hopefully Paul J., our own LC quarry researcher will be able to join us. He originally started his quarry research project in the mid to late 80's. Meeting time is 7:30 and monthly meetings are held in the old Grange Hall of Amherst. It is located at the northwest corner of Milan Ave. & N. Lake. Just go west on Milan Avenue out of downtown Amherst. Actually it is two doors west of the intersection. When looking at a current county map, you will see that Milan Avenue is the dividing line between N.Lake & S.Lake Avenue. On the southwest corner of Milan & Lake, is the Quigley House, the museum for the AHS. The office for AHS is yet at a 3rd location on Jefferson & that office will be moving soon. -- Nancy M. 3. Yes The Lace Company was on Taylor Street on the south side just past The General Industries on the north side. It went out of business around circa 1956. The reason it went out of business was the Eisenhower administration decided the Lace industry wasn't important. They tool off the protective tariff . Belgium Lace could be imported for less money than American Industry could make it for. The reason was tin Belgium it was a cottage industry. some of the lace machines were sold to Argentina and some were broken up by the Hyman Salvage company and sold for scrap metal. The reason I know all this is my father-in-law was a lacemaker and worked there. ----- Original Message ----- From: jennifer pluta <mrs_pud@yahoo.com> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2002 11:33 PM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] Elyria Lace > > I know my husband's grandmother worked there also.
