Do have some very detailed books of the OHIO cemeteries if you need directions to any or possible other names for a certain cemetery. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    1. [OHLORAIN] great speaker & topic
    2. NM Meyers
    3. I have hear this very enthusiastic speaker on several occasions. You will get caught up in his presentation. I will be out of town that afternoon but you won't be sorry if you make the effort to go. The Elyria Public Library presents: "Amongst My Best Men" African-Americans and the War of 1812. Slide presentation by Gerry Altoff, the National Park Service historian at Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial. The program delves into the little-known role of black soldiers, sailors & civilians in one of the least familiar American military conflicts. The experiment of integration by the U.S. Army & Navy was successful, but the country was not progressive enough to continue it after the war ended. This program highlights both the triumph and tragedy of the black soldiers and sailors. This program is free & open to the public. This program is made possible in part by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. "Amongst My Best Men" will be on Saturday, February 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the Scheide Room, Elyria Public Library at 320 Washington Avenue. -- Nancy M. 2. Paul C Johnson
    3. Hi Nancy, thanx for the insight. I do know that my that my grandfather's dad changed his name from Jorgansen to Johnson when he arrived in Cleveland in about 1890, so I'm pretty sure we are not related to any Johnsons back there. I'll check the newspaper films at SLC and see if there are any notices. Otherwise I'll wait and check with Skip in May or June when his life settles down. I did check the films a SLC, but there was a gap in the years I need to check. The 1913 photo was a surprise to find last month. It amazing how much Bernice resembles her mother and my sister. And my dad says he sort of remembers the names on that photo. Is there a way to update my old email address at that site? Thanks again, Paul NM Meyers wrote: > Paul, > The libraries here as well as in Utah where you live, have marriage > applications on microfilm only up thru 1901.

    3. Sorry about the last letter. I didn't realize the HTML editor was on. Hope this is more readable Hi, everyone, I just finished uploading a new book to the Wakeman Library web site. In addition to the other books that were already there, we have added "Pioneer History of Camden Township" by F. E. Weeks. I don't have the index up yet but I believe the pages are searchable through our search engine. (At least I submitted them to be searchable). The books can be found at http://www.wakemanlibrary.com/wakemanlibrary/Genealogy_Reso.html If you find these books, and this web site helpful, I'd appreciate a return email indicating your thoughts. Please send your thoughts and comments to claudia_garner@hotmail.com The library has, for the present, discontinued the transcription of the genealogy material. We hope to convince them, with your letters, that it is a worthwhile project and should be continued. I have recorded the counter on the page as it stands now, and will report the new count tomorrow night. Some of you may have already written me, and I have your letters printed to take to the meeting of the board tomorrow night. Thank you for your help, and good luck searching. 1. [OHLORAIN] COLE/JOHNSON marriage
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Paul, The libraries here as well as in Utah where you live, have marriage applications on microfilm only up thru 1901. Other than that , a person has to go to the courthouse or get real lucky and have a courthouse clerk look it up for you. Hopefully someone on this list will connect with you. If your ancestors lived in the Avon area, perhaps Skip at ivanskipjohn@juno.com may have come across some of the information you need. He was inducted last November into the 1st Families of LC thru his JOHNSON line of Avon. Be patient as it is a very busy time of year for him, as he trains & oversees AARP tax preparers. Back in 1987, a Paul M. JOHNSTON 1V was inducted into 1st Families of LC thru his Paul M. JOHNSTON line. That LC pioneer was living in Grafton Twp.by 1850. Since you do have the marriage date, then please consider that there just might be a little marriage announcement in the local weekly newspaper column for Avon. It may tell just exactly where they married. Hence go to the microfilmed newspapers for that time frame. If the FHC in SLC does not have any filmed newspapers for that time frame, then let me know privately. As I recall, I owe you a favor. BTW, visited http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlorain/pictures/index.htm & enjoyed looking at the photo of Berniece/Bernice's birthplace and her 1913 Avon school picture. Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    3. Re: not finding marriage licenses, I'd like to share what I have have found: Once in a while, the woman was married previously and did not take her maiden name back after the divorce. So, the next marriage is NOT under her maiden name. Also, I was surprised at the number of people who were married in Angola, IN and the Summit/Portage county area in the 1900-1960 time period from Cleveland and the eastern part of Lorain Co. I know Angola, IN was popular because there was no waiting period there, but I'm not sure why the Akron/Canton area was popular. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kathy" <magpie@lightstream.net> To: <OHLORAIN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2002 9:27 AM Subject: [OHLORAIN] Re:Marriage of Bernice Cole Here is a marriage for a Bernice Cole - 1928 - Cleveland, Cuyahogha, Ohio. 3. Nanci, I have someone that I have been trying to find but I don't believe anyone can help as I do not know his first name. He died about 4 July 1880 and was supposed to be buried in Carlisle (LaPorte) Cemetery nd his last name was ESKINS. I do have (don't know what source as it was so long ago) that his first name might be James. But those are the cemeteries he was buried in. I went to Carlisle School when in 1st. grade or Kindergarten and we would visit my Grandparents on Lorain Road (Route 10 then) and go through East Carlis;e,Carlisle nd it seemed as if LaPorte was right there around Carlisle. I know all has changed since then.Sylvia -----Original Message----- From: OHLORAIN-D-request@rootsweb.com <OHLORAIN-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: OHLORAIN-D@rootsweb.com <OHLORAIN-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, January 25, 2002 11:06 PM Subject: OHLORAIN-D Digest V02 #19

    2. NM Meyers
    3. Kim, Referring to our county histories, our county was organized and records began officially in 1824. Rochester was the last township formed within our present day county. By 1846 all current county lines were in place & remained unchanged. The index to Pioneer Women in the WR before 1850 does indicate that Mrs. Benj.Thomas (Polly Hoard) came to Rochester in 1834 from NY. Other early women who came that same year from NY to Rochester were: Mary VanTassel (Mrs. Anson Pearce); Clarissa Thomas (Mrs. Samuel Craig); Caroline Bonney (Mrs. Ed Stevens); Fear (Mrs.Aaron Welcher); Mary Rowland (Mrs. Alonzo Welcher). The Welcher's moved to Star, IA by 1896. Ed Thomas came to Rochester Twp.in 1835 from VT. -- Nancy

    3. Nancy, What year was Lorain co. formed? Was Rochester Township included in Huron Co. prior to 1850? That could explain something for me. I was told by another researcher that my 4th Great-Parents (Benjamin Thomas-m-Polly Hoard) migrated to Rochester in 1834. I managed to get Polly Hoard's father's will (dated Oct 1841) from New York. It shows Benjamin and Polly living in Huron Co. Thanks Kim

    2. Do you need any information for Boynton around 1900 in Elyria? I know that I have a picture of a Lizzie Boynton. It's a debutante type photo from around 1894. She was a friend of my great grandmother, Clara Louise Smith Taylor. They were in the '95 club. I might have something else on her from Clara's scrapbook. Lisa Grissom

    2. Thank you- You are very kind. I am searching for information on Tabor Wood (1800-1891) family. Tabor was born in Bristol Co. Mass. and died in Oberlin, Lorain Co. buried in Westwood Cemetery. His 1st wife was Eliza Fuller (1803-1840). She died in NY. Tabor and 2 nd wife Almira (1813-1891) came to Lorain Co in the 1840's. I am looking for information about the children- Samuel (1827-aft 1905), Ellen Wood Hurlbut of Elyria (1832-1890), Edwin A Wood (1834-aft 1891) Frank (1836-aft 1891) and Thomas (1840-1902). Wood is such a common name, it's been hard. I found a listing of newspaper articles on the LCHS Website. There are several articles I'd really like to see. It is from an external source and I asked him for help. The article # are 23190 May 21, 1891 Almira Wood obit 23195 April 18, 1866 Eva Wood obit 23198 May 16, 1884 Frank Wood Marriage in Michigan 23219 12/24/1907 Mary A Wood died 27191 2/11/08 Massillon What can you suggest?
