    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] small grave yard
    2. I was at a basketball game last night and was talking with a gentleman about the area and its history and the subject of graveyards came up :-), anyway he was interested in who maintains the older ones, the untended ones particularly a small graveyard somewhere in or about the area of the steel plant (about 6 markers) He was talking West River, Gulf Road, Abbe sounded like not in Elyria perhaps Sheffield??? and where do any of these meet up around the steel plant I could not picture where he was talking about so I thought I would perhaps ask you all if anyone knows???? Thanks in advance Marilyn

    1. [OHLORAIN] Elyria quarry
    2. Debby Thompson
    3. Th Elyria quarry just of Mussey Ave. is behind LTV steel. It's on the Ohio EPA list. In the 1950's the steel plant used the quarry for dumping contaminents. The local kids still swim in it though.

There is also a small Quarry on my uncle farm on the Telegraph Road > it > near the west edge of the farm about 100 feet from the RR tracks right by > the overpass bridge. I was talking with an older fellow from work and specifically asked about the Telegraph 'Road quarry due to my interest and research in the area, he said it was a small quarry and they particularly used the stones for the overpass railroad bridge by the foundry. (near Elyria Dairies and the Gyro House) I mentioned the 16th street quarry and he said that one was used to build Elyria High School and the bank building. Just bits of interesting information (please remember this is unconfirmed by me but a CLUE...........) Marilyn

    1. [OHLORAIN] Ammon/Smith-Elyria
    2. I've seen a lot of wonderful responses on this site; so was hoping maybe I'd be able to get some help. I don't live in Ohio anymore and don't have a research place close to me. And I'm at a standstill. Charles Ammon died in 27 April 1937 in Akron. He was the son of Frederick Ammon and Eliza Johnson. Frederick died in Elyria on 28 Nov 1897. Eliza died 18 Aug 1901 in Elyria (her parents Joseph Johnson and Ann Brown). Problems: I haven't been able to locate some proof of their deaths: obit; death certificate; burial record. And I'm not clear on if Frederick and Eliza married in Elyria or if Eliza's parents were there also. Frederick and Eliza had 6 children: Charles, Arthur, Cora, Jay, Josephine (died in Elyria on 18 Aug 1874) and Clara. I have no information on any of the other children. I sure would appreciate any information on this family. Charles wife was Harriet Smith died 20 June 1934 in Akron. Her father was Granville Smith. I have no other information on him or who Harriet's mother was. Thank you, Theresa

    1. [OHLORAIN] Re: More praises for Nick
    2. This will embarrass him further ;-), but I have to share that when I got my NGS Newsmagazine Jan/Feb issue in the mail today, I found Byron Bray praising Nick in TWO paragraphs on p. 37, in an article "Family History Online #3." Nick, thanks for all you do to help other researchers. Sarah

    3. Please see the Jan./Feb. issue of the NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL sOCIETY magazine, Vol. 28, NO 1. One of our LC list subscribers Byron C. Bray of Albany OR, has written another very useful article entitled FAMILY HISTORY ONLINE #3 (Look-ups & Records Online.) While he gives researchers all across the US, he managed to tell others what a big help that our Nick Melhinch was to him. My personal comments: Nick does more free research for others than any other person I know & he does it for at least three northeast OH counties that I know of. Nick also has created useful databases for genealogy research all on his own with out any support from any group. He has also been involved with the OGS LC Chapter projects thru the years. he has served as an Chapter officer, chairperson and currently is serving as the First Families Of LC Chairman Nick & I have collaborated on some mutual projects so I do know of his commitment to the world of genealogy research. He gives sacrificially of his time and own money for this cause. He is a devoted grandfather, retired from the US Postal Service. We are proud to have him as a friend. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    2. Claudia Garner
    3. Hello, Many thanks to those of you who sent email responses to the Wakeman Library committee, concerning transcribing history and genealogy of our Firelands area. Our drive was successful, and the program will be continued with more community support. We received a large number of wonderful letters from all over the country, and that convinced the board. That plus 1,000 hits since Sunday noon. Thank you all again for taking time to reply. 3. Sue, to add to your viras report. Theres a site www.catchup.cnet.com, that will not only examine your programs for updates, and security problems, but will check for 3rd party intrusion in your software. Ive used this site for a few years now, and found it, plus a virus program, to be heaven sent. The best thing, its free. Duane
