2. It is possible it was overlooked or perhaps there was not a stone standing at the time they inventoried the cemetery. There should be a contact person on the Lorain County webpage for that cemetery. Lorain County Ohio Genealogy or http://www.centuryinter.net/lorgen/

3. I know for a fact that my great great grandmother Jane Mears was burried at Columbia Center Cemetary in Lorain County Ohio on February 15, 1880. (Family Bible and other offical documents) I have looked at the cemetary inscriptions for that cemetary and have not found hers there :(. Is it possible that the whole cemetary was not indexed? Anyone with information on this cemetary would be greatly appreciated :). Jean Hill MEARS, CARSCADDEN, JACOBS

His death was not unexpected, as he has been a sufferer of that disease for some time. The deceased was a native of Vermont and moved to this country in 1837. In Ridgeville, Lorain Co., Ohio on 19th inst. Alma HANCHETT in the 90th year of her age. Mother Hanchett was born in the state of New York; she with her husband emigrated to this country at an early day, and were among the first settlers in Ridgeville. She professed religion some time before the year 1798, at which time she became a member of the M.E. church which was then in its infancy, and she retained her membership until she was dismissed from the militant to join the triumphant church in glory. She was a soldier of the cross 48 years, and her aquaintances believe she will wear a crown forever. Death found her ready to depart, and like the Patriarchs, she gathered up her feet and died in great peace.

1. [OHLORAIN] Business listing
2. Anna Hanson
3. On the Lorain city history site, there is a listing of businesses of 1878; in the list is a Henry SHORT, as involved in Meats. Can anyone help me figure out how to get more particulars about that Henry? I have two Henry Shorts in my line: Henry Sr., who I know very little about but guess was born 1830s or so, married to Anna Elizabeth MILLER, b. 1834. Then their son, Henry Jr. b. 1857, married to Augusta WARDESKA abt late 1880's. So I'm trying to figure out if the Henry SHORT listed for Lorain fits either of my Henrys. 3. Hi, A bit ago there was a posting from Theresa concerning Harriet Smith and her father Granville Smith. (I got that information from the PML service of rootsweb) Do you have any idea where she was born? (Maybe from a death certificate?) I have a Granville Smith (although born in Missouri), who had children who left Missouri. I don't have all his childen's names, but there are Harrietts in his cousins and neices and nephews, so perhaps that's a name for this family, too. 3. Diane, 2 ideas. 1. Lorain casting could have been an affialiate of the ship yard, or steel mills. You could check that route 2. Polks, city directory for that era, remember, it could also have another name. 3. I just thought of something, trade organizations, check the local trade unions . 2. Diane Nott
3. Hi! I am looking for information on the Lorain Casting Company that used to be on Omaha in Lorain around the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. I am trying to find information on my great grandfather Horace Morehouse. I visited the LCHS yesterday and found nothing in the files. There were ads in the Lorain Directories but nothing else. Can anyone help? 2. Karen, Write to the governor's office immediately. someone there will look into it, I am sure. I would also copy the letter to whomever is in charge there. I have been there but never used the facilities upstairs but my cousin did and was treated just fine. Mary

2. I have never been treated badly there but I have been aware from time to time of them not being very helpful. Perhaps you should write them and ask them yourself. Perhahps you would get an answer.Or maybe they would fix the problem before you and I return. Ruth

3. Yesterday I took a four drive and went to visit the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus. Although I was amazed and thrilled with the amount of information available and the amount of information I was able to copy, I was treated very badly by a member of the staff there. I am contemplating a return trip or two and was wondering if this is just a fluke or have others had bad experiences there? I've visited many times the Burton Collection in Downtown Detroit - which has a reputation for bad treatment of patrons, But NEVER in my entire research career have been treated as badly as yesterday at the OHS. Does anyone on this list volunteer there or go there? Has anyone had any problems there? To do the prep that I did, and then drive the four hours, and then be treated so poorly makes me wonder? I felt so badly I got physically ill on the way home. It was just a nightmare! Thoughts? Suggestions? Karen (Michigan)

3. Marilyn and Margaret, The cemetery in question is the Day-Root Family cemetery in Sheffield Township. There are 13 burials listed in the cemetery book. The earliest date is 1826. You can read the inscriptions at http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/cemetery/SH-1Day-Root.htm This page also tells who to contact for more information. 1. [OHLORAIN] Small Cemeteries
2. Gulf Rd changes to East River Rd after it crosses Rt 254 traveling north. E. 31st St ends (or starts) at East River Rd just east of the steel plant and south of going over a set of railroad tracks. Just slightly over the tracks, French Creek Road cuts off to the right heading into Avon. Just north of that cut off, on E. River Rd, on the west side of the road, on a small hill, there is a very small fenced in cemetery. You would have to park on the side of the road and climb a small embankment to get to the cemetery. I know where it is, I do not know who maintains it. Nor, do I know the name of it. Hope that helps. Margaret
