Hi all ... I am looking for information on a Francis L. "Frank" WELLS b: 1843 in Erie Co., OH to Francis James and Ann (Hill) WELLS (she was the daughter of John HILL who died about 1880 .. I think). Frank served in the Civil War from 1861 to about 1872 discharged in Rhode Island. He met and married an Irish Catholic girl there in 1872. After two daughters being born in RI: Nellie and Mary J. WELLS, they moved to Wellington as his parents had moved here. Evidentially, his mother was not happy with his Irish Catholic wife as according to her own testimony she knew nothing about her, did not want to know anything about her and would not allow her in the house. Since the children were raised in the Catholic church, I suspect it was the same for the children. On the 1880 census, Frank was running a Billiard Room in Wellington. It was stated that he drank heavily and gambled his money away. The children born in Wellington were Agnes b: ca 1876, Katherine W. b: ca 1878, Frank b: ca 1879 and Josephine M. "Josie" born 1880. In 1883 after receiving 'property' from his grandfather (must be John Hill), he sold the 'property' for $3000 and set out to start his own business ... and never returned. He went to Peninsula, Summit Co, OH and then to Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH. There is a possibility he was also in Sparta, Stark Co., OH and Medina Co., OH for a short time in the mid-1880s. In 1900 they found him dead in his 'West side Room" after he had not been to work for several days. At least Mary J., Katherine W. and Josephine M. lived in Cleveland from about 1889 to at least 1924 when their mother died in Cleveland (they brought her to Cleveland in Oct 1901). In 1902 Josephine, Katherine and Mary J. were not married .. worked as dressmakers and stenographer. I only know Mary J. the dressmaker was not married when her mother died in 1924 .. and possibly Josephine. I would like to know what happened to Nellie, Agnes and Frank... did they die in Wellington or get married? In the request for Widow pensions, there is no mention at all of the son, Frank .. so I believe he may have died very young. Also, there is no mention of the daughter Agnes. However, it did indicate that when he left her that she had 6 children, the youngest being 1-1/2 years old. Can anyone fill me in on this family and what happened to the children? Also, any information on John Hill and his wife would be appreciated. Bonita -- Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
Unfortunately, the viruses do not get sent only from address books, but can be routinely sent from names on messages in the person's inbox. For those of us who keep lots of email, if we get a virus, it could go to many, many people. I cannot understand why people will not purchase and keep up to date a virus program. I once asked an ISP about warning people to get virus programs, and they disagreed that it was not their business to do this. I guess they thought it would cost them business. In my opinion computer sellers and ISPs , as well as Rootsweb, could help people by stressing the need for virus protection. Charles F. Lee born CT 1843, served 106th OVI Co.B, went to Cleveland after the CW and worked with J.F.Ryder. Lee came to Elyria and opened his own studio in Elyria Bldg in 1876. Lee's studio was still open for business in 1894. I lose track of him after that. Charles Schiede, famous Elyria photograpsher became his apprentice in 1889 at the tender age of 14. I couldn't agree more, Margaret. AntiVirus software is kind of like home insurance and should be thought of in much the same way. Sooner or later, you're going to need it. And the best time to have it is BEFORE you need it. Where it differs from insurance is in the sense that having this simple piece of $30.00 software can eliminate the possibility of ever acquiring such a virus or of spreading it on to your correspondents (at least in 99.99% of cases). That's very cheap insurance in a world where the equipment you're protecting is often valued at $1,000 or more. Regards, Byron Bray byron.bray@cmug.com
Mary, I have had requests to view your Lorain postcards since you originally posted to the list. Are you planning to leave them on your website for awhile? I could post a link from the county website if you do. Sue -- Sue Strick, Lorain County Coordinator for OHGenWeb Lorain County Genealogy Page, http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen L.C. Virginia, Re a death certificate for Mary Gibson: If you get a death certificate locally in the county, it will tell you, among other things, where Mary is buried. There is a lot less information on the certificate issued by the state. There are three Health Departments in our county; Lorain City, Elyria City and Lorain County. See http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/resources.htm for addresses and phone numbers. > Greetings all! > I am interested in the names of cemeteries located on the Lorain Co./Cuyahoga Co. border or close to. This would encompass a great deal of towns on the border of two counties, from the lake to 30? 40? miles to the south of it. Can you pinpoint a town with church records, or city directories, or census records so you know where look more closely? Maybe others on the list can suggest some clues to help you narrow down your search. Gail, Ohio
I am trying to identify and date a photo taken in Elyria. The photographer's name looks like Chas F Lee, No. 35 West Broad St. Can anyone tell me when this photography shop was in business? Thanks! Sharon
Greetings all! I am interested in the names of cemeteries located on the Lorain Co./Cuyahoga Co. border or close to. I have no problem with phoning the cemeteries myself, I just don't know who to call. I am researching my Grandmother Mary "Mollie" Brown Gibson, b.1885ish in TN who I believe died in NEOH. My father was born in Cuyahoga in 1917, but "Lorain" has popped up on records also. I know, at least, that they were West siders. I am looking closely at a particular Mary E Gibson that I found on the Ohio Historical Society's Death Index: Mary E Gibson, d.8/9/1934, Lorain Co., Vol.8223, Cert.52392. Yes, I have since sent for a copy of this DC - sooooo 90 or so days from now... The only tidbit - and this one is self generated - that I think can narrow things down is the fact that since my Mary was from TN - I do not believe she was Catholic. And considering the times - I think I can feel very certain that she was not cremated - and is buried somewhere. Thank you!
