Jim, I've never heard a stupid question from a genealogist. How else can we learn?? See the Lorain County webpage for information about early birth certificates. See Lorain County's Resource page at http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/resources.htm Another alternative is to order the microfilm from the Family History Library (LDS). See the first entry at http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/lookups.htm You might also hire a local researcher by visiting http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/researchers.htm Our Lorain county webpage can be very helpful. Debby Birth and Death records from 20 Dec 1908 are found at the Health Department. There are three: Lorain city, Elyria city and Lorain county. You may need to contact all three. See Lorain County's Resource page at http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/resources.htm for phone and addresses. Following the discussion earlier about the best place to order certificates, can someone please advise me as to the best place to order birth certificates for individuals born between 1862 and 1895. Their place of residence in census data was Lorain County, Amherst Township, North Amherst City. I will also need to order a marriage certificate that should date from about 1882 or so. I was going to order from the Historical Society, but is there a better location that would have more information? Thank you in advance for responding to what one might consider a stupid question.
im looking for phone numbers of places to call to get info for a death certicate in 1946. is there any special place to call because the date is so old? its my grandfather, anthony dicello. he is not buried there ,he was shipped back to punxatawney pa and is buried there.i have no other info except his name and date of death, december 24 1946. thank you debby
Hello, I think I remember a short time ago there was some interest shown on this list about the quarries. I came across this article in the Vermilion News and thought some of you folks may find it interesting. Sharon Swanson Thursday, 13 December 1906 STRIKE AT QUARRIES On account of the cut in wages and shorter hours several quarrymen struck last week. They were given notice by the company to be in their places Tuesday morning or to have their names placed on the black list making it difficult for them to secure employment at any of the quarries. This cut and shorter hours is an annual procedure as the machinery will not work during the cold weather and the men are employed during the winter in making preparations for the opening of new quarries during the summer, therefore the necessity for the change. The men at the Big Six the largest quarry in the world, have refused to join the strikers.
"If you get a death certificate locally in the county, it will tell you, among other things, where Mary is buried. There is a lot less information on the certificate issued by the state." I have noticed that some offer more info. than others but I thought that was due to the different years. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
This Civil War veteran buried in Wellington in 1900, may have had his grave marked with a free government marker if his wife or other relative was not able to afford a marker. The "Lorain County Burials Locations of Veterans of Various Wars", compiled by Burton J. Nesbitt & published in 1991 by the Black River Genealogists, has him listed as F.L.Wells, though the Greenwood Cem. Records book lists him as F.S. Wells. Those old fancy script "L"s did often look like "S"s. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

Believe these are the parents of F.S. WELLS you seek. F. J. WELLS is buried in yet another lot, #312 in Greenwood Cem. was buried at age 88 on May 23, 1902. John H. WELLS, same lot, was buried at age 47 on Nov. 8, 1907. Mina Wells, lot #311, was buried at age 88 on June 23, 1946. Anna H. WELLS, lot 311, was buried at age 91y 11m 25d on Feb. 14, 1917. There are many more WELLS in that cemetery. You now can order the obits for a nominal fee since you now have exact dates from the Herrick Memorial Library. That is no doubt him as they found him dead on Oct 6, 1900 and the undertaker (a Mr. Couch?) who was also the Mayor of Wellington in 1900 went to Cleveland to pick up the body and bury him. However, I thought he was born in 1843 (census) .. which would have made him 57 .. but, now that I remember, his wife kept stating that he was 'almost 60' .. but he stated he was 29 in 1872 when they married. The middle initial is supposed to be "L" .. I always thought it was James until I read the pension records... the interviewer specifically asked his mother if his middle initial was "L" and she said yes. I always thought he was a "Jr". I am surprised he had a stone as his wife was quite destitute (according to the pension papers) .. but, maybe his mother paid for it. I believe Fred is his brother, John H. Wells, son. I am surprised that his father, Francis J., mother: Ann Hill Wells, and his sister, Minnie are not all buried there. I grew up in Wellington and am back there every two years or so. My mother worked for the WELLS INSURANCE AGENCY for years. The owner was Stuart Wells, very possibly deceased by now. The agency, however is still there. Stuart had I think two sons. Perhaps if you contact the agency they could help you out. Penny (Hand) Hanes
I have sent this message or something relative to many - and now feel I need to post to all: So, for what it is worth... I meant nothing negative toward the lists nor am I remotely looking at "the lists" as the cause of any of my computer problems. I did discover a "worm virus" on my computer. I am not hard-drive savvy and do not understand the full complication linked to this or other viruses and I wanted to protect everyone else. I also started receiving private emails from people that discovered me through "some" list (I was subscribed to many) who started sending me fwd material with hidden attachments/images not related to genealogy. I have sent requests to those individuals to make sure they no longer send anything. I do still belong to several Surname lists and the ones I have chosen to delete are Counties in which I cannot find any further link with at this time. I really did belong to too many! I am going to be receiving several records in about 90 or so days and will be subscribing (or re-subscribing as it may) with whichever lists I need to resume my search. Again, my decision was based on wanting to protect others. I see now that perhaps I should have explained myself better... And, thanks to many suggestions - we are going to be installing a more efficient/effective virus protection program! I have found McAfee to be worthless. Warmest Regards and Fruitful Hunting! Virginia
Ruth, Aren't computer databases wonderful? If you have not already done so, then you can ID additional Columbia Twp family surnames by typing in "Columbia" in the search line on the 1880 Ohio CD. and then take only those that come up as being in Lorain Co., as well doing the same for Cuyahoga Co. in the 1820 census but for Lorain Co. in the 1830, 1840 & 1850 at Ancestry.com Curious as to how many Columbia Twp family names have you identified so far? Hope we will see them as a link soon on the http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen -- Nancy M. Sylvia, In addition, if you are a member of Ancestry.com you can browse thru 1860, 1870, 1880 census but the 1850 index is linked to the census pages. Perhaps you can ID that elusive given name that way. Nancy M. For starters, I hope will you post a query at the lorgen web page in addition to the surname ESKINS that you have registered. Have you sent for the DC and obituary of each of his children? It may list the fathers name. Also you can check listings for ESKINS in the 1880 CD index. You will find one in Cuy. Co. & four in LC. I would follow-up on each of those given names of the ESKINS, if need be, for additional info. Thomas 1852-1907 is buried in Evergreen Cem.Dover Twp per the necrology file on line. I would check with that cemetery. Let the list know how you make out. Hope this helps. -- Nancy M. Fellow lists, How would I go about looking for my Great Great Grandfather Eskins when I was told by my Grandmother that he was buried in Carlisle Cemetery but so far have not been able to find him. He died (about) 4 July 1880 and he had my Great Grandfather ( as one of his children) Thomas Eskins who is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Cuyahoga County? The reason I have so much trouble is I do not know his first name. I have hit a dead end with only that many generations. Can someone tell me how to go about finding his first nae? Hi, List. It's been awhile since I posted, so maybe it's time to try again! I am interested in all early Columbia Twp. residents, but particularly those that married into the Osborn(e)s, Hoadleys, Snells. If you have any connections to Columbia Twp., I would love to hear from you. I've been collecting a lot of as yet unrelated (pun intended) information on 19th century families and would love to be able to link them. I would also welcome suggestions on sources to check for more information. Thanks, Ruth in Lansing, MI
There is a F.S.WELLS aged 60, buried on Oct. 8, 1900 in Greenwood Cem. in Wellington. Perhaps a relative? In the same lot there is buried a Fred WELLS age 67, buried on March 8, 1936.
