Check in Erie and Huron Counties, since they were the original counties for the Connecticut Reserve aka Firelands. I guess it is a book. I have heard it mentioned many times on line. I do have a women who was listed in the 1850 census of Lorain County and was wondering if she might be in that book. Her name was Cook, Catharine Cook. Her husband was "David" Cook who is the biggest thorn in my genealogist side. I also found the same information but nothing else on him. The first David Cook was a farmer but knowing that ddidn't help me much. Ruth Ann
The speaker on quarries scheduled for tonight at the AHS has been canceled. He was coming from Solon, east of Cleveland. Roads have become parking lots. That is Ohio weather. -- Nancy M. Ruth, Checked with negative results for you David & Catherine Cook. There are several pages of indexed women's names in the 2 volume set of PIONEER WOMEN OF THE WESTERN RESERVE. (These books contain little vignettes.) There are hundreds more names indexed to compilation of data from field notes for the 1896 project. An effort was made to have a committee in charge of each township. Does it come as a surprise to you to know that in 1896 Women's Dept. of the Cleveland Centennial Commission had trouble getting enough volunteers to a make this a complete project? So some townships/communites went unrepresented in this work. There were 216 townships to be covered, most were 25 miles square. As far as Lorain County goes, the townships of Camden, Columbia, Henrietta, LaGrange, Pittsfield, & Ridgeville did not submit lists of data that were later microfilmed by the WRHS. However in the the set of books, there is mention of LaGrange & Ridgeville. Tried to check the queries at the Lorgen query pages, for your David Cook. Was trying to refresh my memory a bit and get a little more information. Vaguely recall a request to look for some David Cook info from someone long ago. -- Nancy M. Dear Nancy, Thank you for the reply.Since that query of 1958 I have heard from a William Milton Phelps decendent. We have exchange our genealogy with each other and they stopped for a visit. Which was wonderful. They even photograph some of our tombstones in Ohio. However we cannot find Julia Phillips parents. Too many Phillips to be sure which Phillips she may descend from. I visited Ontario Co., NY. a couple years ago. No Luck in finding her parents. Thank you and appreciate your help. You folks are "great". Hi Olive, Jean Phelps was in my mother's Wellington High School class and they still keep in touch. Do you know Jean? She was probably born in 1914, because my mom, who was a year young for her class, was born in 1915. I believe Jean now lives in Texas and seems to be doing well. Russ, Wanted to let you know that I did check my PERSI source and came up empty handed on additional info for your WOLCOTT line from NY to OH. The PERSI (Periodical Resource Index) compiled & published by Allen Co. Library in Fort Wayne is great! Wondered if you had personally used the ORPF at OGS? (Ohio Records of Pioneer Families) Lorain's main library has a large but incomplete set, & the index is not updated either. OGS, in Mansfield, has entire set of course. If you have had any relatives helping in this research, they may have overlooked something that you personally would recognize as a clue to follow up on. Wished that I had something new to give you, but be assured that it will be in the back of my mind. TTYL -- Nancy M. Fellow Genealogists, As of this writing there are 4,854 RAOGK volunteers. It is perhaps one of largest totally volunteer project on the Internet. For the new folks, this means:Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness. Yesterday we were all emailed a warning by the RAOGK staff. Basically, it warns us about professionals "using" volunteers. The RAOGK staff has been notified that there are some professional research people (not necessarily genealogists) who are using RAOGK volunteers to get information and then in turn charging their clients for their work. Volunteers have been instructed to notify their state co-ordinator and the RAOGK staff will handle it from there. This site is based on people helping people, and also a little "Good Book" philosophy -- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Have suspected some so called professionals using the "lookup" link at the Lorain County's Lorgen website. I proceed cautiously at that point. Some, with integrity, will tell you in advance, the requested info is for a client or for the never married, lost 3rd cousin, twice removed, of their neighbor. On the other hand, I personally have met some wonderful researchers thru hours spent as a RAOGK volunteer. Yes, there are those who simply have the "gimme's". So be kind to volunteer web masters & researchers where ever they are. Since most people cannot budget enough time or money to get to all the places they would like to research in, these sites are how I get some of my trade-off research accomplished. Where ever you may live, think about giving some free research time. It is a joy and you will learn much about local history. Now back to my miserable computer problems. Having several today. :-( -- Nancy M. I do remember the March 1998 query that you wisely posted on the Lorgen webpage.. Per the Women in the Western Reserve Before 1850, published 1896, Julia came to Rochester Twp in 1836 and her last know residence was in Oberlin OH. Julia's son, William Milton PHELPS died at age 85 years, 10 months, 29 days and was buried in Greenwood Cem. on Dec. 30, 1926. His wife, Mary KELSEY PHELPS is buried in the lot next to him. She died at age 72 years, 6 months, 28 days and was buried on Decc. 29, 1913. When you send for those obits, there should be some more clues for you to work with. Hope this fills in a couple of blanks spaces in a family group sheet for you and that you have gotten some other contacts these past four years of being so patient. -- Nancy M. Debby, Nick checked the at the Lorain County Health dept. for Anthony Dicello with negative results. I had to return some library materials today & since you had posted the death date, I could check for his obit. He died at age 40, in the city of Lorain. You want to get his DC, you can get the address & phone number for the Lorain City Health Dept. at the Lorgen web page below, then scroll down to the RESOURCES link. The obit was barely readable but I copied it any way. If you email me your postal address privately, I will gladly mail it to you. BTW, Anthony was in the city directory from 1942 thru 1946. There were no Dicello's in the 1940 Lorain directory from 1947 on. -- Nancy M. Hello, Do you know that for 5 cents - you can get a birth or death NON certified record from the State of Ohio? (from 1945 to the present) State of Ohio Dept of Health Vital Stats. Box 15098 Columbus, Ohio 43215-0098 but if you want it faster than 2 months - better go to the County. Debbie - What info are you looking for from the Rochester cemetery? I live in Rochester Twp. and my neighbor is the cemetery sexton so I will check with him when I know what you are looking for. I can't do outside checking for you right now because I am "housebound" with a broken leg (cast from toes to just below knee) and since it's my right leg I can't even drive. I'm assuming by Rochester Station Cemetery you mean the cemetery in Rochester Village on Griggs Rd. Is this correct?
