    3. Dear Medina and Lorain List members: Do you have a family member who attended Oberlin as a preparatory or college student? If so, Oberlin College's archives mahy be a great source of information. Perhaps even photos. Here's what Edward G. Schwaegerle, Research Volunteer with the Oberlin College Archives, wrote regarding my great grand aunt: Unfortunately, early photographic albums only featured graduates of the college course and not the preparatory department. Yearbooks did not begin until the late 1890s Edward G. 3. This message about Cromwell has been driving me crazy all morning. For those of you in Lorain, this is the area where Janis Dodge is now located across the street from a gas station, Burger King and Convenient. A few years ago I worked at that convenient store and I vaguely remember someone telling me about a mill that had once been in that location. I think it was a co-worker. I am going to try to get in touch with him and see what I can find out. Was someone looking for particular info about Cromwell Steel? 3. Hi Lorain Co. friends, There has been quite a bit of discussion recently about the Neff surname. Neff is one of the maternal lines in our Dague (Deeg) family. Other maternal surnames were Swihart (Swinehart, Schweinhardt), Harsh, Smith, Arnold, Archer, Buffham, Gilbert, LaBar (Lawar, LaBarre). 3. I am sure that a retired "steel man" on this list will have more information about this company. However, after checking my own sources & a with couple of very knowledgeable people, here is what I can share....... The Cromwell Steel Co. started building its plant on the east side of Lorain (behind the location of the new Post Office Building) in 1916. It was just south of Colorado Ave. Cromwell Gardens (which is a low income housing project) got its name from being built on the Cromwell Steel land, after WW II. This steel plant made a gray iron type for the WW I war effort. After the WWI, it closed and tried to open again in 1922. Then the plant was not very successful, & closed. A map shows that the building was torn down in 1926. When you look at a current map of the city of Lorain, look in the area that is southwest of Root Rd. and Colorado Ave. -- Nancy M. 3. Nancy, the Lucy Arvilla Taft was my Grandfather's Mother who was wed to Joseph E. Taft and they lived both in Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties. Asa was the next to youngest to be born in Lorain County in a log cabin on Root Road. I will have to look up for sure the dates that the Neff, Eskins and Taft lived there if I can . Thank you for the Neff/Haury in the Necrology but couldn't even find my Great Great Grandfather Neff Anthony) .or even my Grandfather Asa Taft who passed away in 1966 but my Grandmother was in there and they lived in the same house and she passed away in 1973. Did get a lot to pass on to help a cousin on the Haury side. 1. [OHLORAIN] Emery family request
    2. Hinckley
    3. The Isaac Emery/Lucinda Shaw family moved westward from New York state. Their first three children were born in New York state in 1855, 1859, and 1862. The next child, Burdette Dennis Emery was born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio, 21 Nov 1863, but I've never seen it proven. The next child was born in Michigan in Sept.1867, and the others in Wisconsin. I am looking for an uncertified copy of Burdette's birth certificate. If there are no records this far back, how can I prove this date? I am also wondering how to tell where they lived, etc. while they were in Lorain county. Many thanks for your help, Heather Emery Hinckley evrgreen@ttc-cmc.net

    2. The Haller name mentioned in this query caught my eye. I don't know if it will be any help at all - there are 42 listings for Haller in the Cleveland 2001 white pages. My 2nd cousin, Helen Boardman was married to a Clarence J. Haller. She died in Sept or Oct of 1983. Helen was the daughter of my Great Aunt Kathryn Werner Carrington - Boardman - Stewart She outlived 3 husbands and died in Columbus at the age of 92. (Kathryn's sister, was my paternal grandmother, Anna Werner Lapp - m - Heinrich George Lapp) - Elyria, OH My cousin Helen, and her husband, were in their 60's (at least) - the last time I visited them at 27600 Detroit Road,Westlake, OH -- he was a retired salesman from a moving company. This was in 1980. We exchanged christmas cards until Helen died -- then, after a few years, my cards came back. I assumed Clarence J. Haller died. I do NOT remember if they had children. Sorry. Don't know if this is any help at all or not. My parents weren't big on "family ties" That is too bad as now I am scrambling trying to find people and put the pieces together. Thanks to OHLorain and Rootsweb posting, I found a cousin (I didn't know existed) who has traced the Lapp's back 6 generations into Germany. I am truly truly grateful for these sites and "random acts" of kindness. God Bless, Alice Lapp

March 2, 2002 page B-2 North Ridgeville ..."Police found a tombstone dated 1813-1899 at Compton's car wash at the corner of Center Ridge and Case Rd. yesterday afternoon. The tombstone read Thomas RODWAY, grandfather, 1813-1899. A police representative said the tombstone was probably taken out of someone's car while it was being cleaned. 1. [OHLORAIN] HAURY/NEFF death notices online
    2. NM Meyers
    3. Researchers, If you have not already done so, search the Cleveland Necrology file, there are NEFF's & many HAURY's online here: http://dxsrv4.cpl.org/WebZ/html/obit.html?sessionid=01-3707-1608671676 Type in the surname, but enter it as the Keyword instead of just as the Name. You will then get every instance of Haury or Neff then. Also since Erhart was a small & close knit community, type in Erhart for the keyword & you'll be amazed how many folks lived & died there. Some will be relatives or friends of your family. Hope there is some additional info here for you. Let us know you much new data you can gather there. -- Nancy M.
