Point of Information for Avon residents & other interested parties. Wednesday March 20, The Cuyahoga-West Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will hold their meeting at 7:30 P.M. in the Westlake United Methodist Church at 27650 Center Ridge Road, Westlake. Keith Sheldon, historian for the Bay Village Historical Society and Rose Hill Museum, will tell us about the early settler families of North Dover Township. Please note that Dover township is adjacent to the present day Avon township in northeast Lorain County. You may recall that Avon was part of that area of Cuyahoga Co. before Lorain County was formed in 1824. So this program might have some meaningful information if your ancestor was a very early pioneer. BTW, if you have not read the history of Avon Township please visit http://www.centuryinter.net/tjs11/hist/hto74.htm -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH
Debbie, The directory you mentioned..... Is this the updated one with 60,000 entries for Elyria HS 1863-present and the Elyria West HS 1976-1996? If so, I will send you a private lookup or two. I had purchased one about four years ago and made the mistake of loaning it to a relative. They said lost it. Well, live & learn! BTW, members of the Elyria Alumni Assoc. was interviewed on WEOL radio today. Now, besides the printed book form, there is also a CD version that is searchable, has the songs by both HS bands and photos. If anyone else is interested in this updated directory or the CD, the publishers number is 1-800-877-6554. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

Hi, Bob, Some time ago, I said I would check my Colorado Obituaries for Oberlin connections. I checked 2 of the 4 books last night and found just 2 references: There is a Frank Edmund DOST, born 28 Spr 1939 who died 28 Sep 1990 at age 51. He was born in Oberlin but died in Denver. His vocation was an Interior and architectural designer; burial place was Smithtown, NY. Whether he was an Oberlin H. S. grad, it didn't say but thought I would pass it along. The other Oberlin reference was to Janet SNOW PALMER. She earned two degrees from Oberlin College but was born in Cleveland and died in Denver. She was a psychiatrist; interment was in Brecksville, OH. Spouse was Robert. She was born 17 Oct 1906 and died 9 Oct 1995, age 88. I hope to check the other 2 volumes within a day or two. Easiest way to find your people is just to rent a roll of 1920 soundex film. Many public libraries that have an interlibrary loan service can order they for you at a nominal fee for postage & handling. BTW, Ohio will not have any soundex help for the 1930 census to be released next month. The areas covered by the E.D. (enumerating districts) number changed from one federal census to the next. Some large research libraries do have a few overlay maps for really big cities. Have used one for Detroit & Cleveland many many years ago. Perhaps they have a new and better system now. There were never any cities that large in this county. Of course you may view them all at the National Archives & and its various branches. The maps are arranged by the state, county,& then locality and are in Record Group 29. I used them in D.C. a few times. They are listed in the CARTOGRAPHIC RECORDS of the BUREAU of the CENSUS. They are usually annotated to show boundries and numbers and span the census years 1860-1940. Really valuable for those states without the help of the soundex/miracode system. -- Nancy M. Hi List, I, too, am researching steel mills. In the 1920 Census Avon Township, my father, age 21, gives his occupation as "helper, steel mills." I've found this (below) for Cromwell Steel. Richelle Parma, OH extracted from: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~usbios/Ohio/bios/cuyahoga/griffithses.txt Bio of Edwin S. Griffiths from Cleveland Special Limited Edition, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago & New York, 1918 v. 1pg. 69 Mr. Griffiths is president of The Buckeye Engine Company at Salem, Ohio, manufacturers of Steam and gas engines, and this industry has 750 people on the payroll. The [sic] is vice president of The Cromwell Steel Company of Lorain County. The plant of this company is now in course of construction and operations will start September 1, 1917. The company will manufacture open hearth steel and the plans are to start the business with 1,000 workmen.
One more question, anyone have a quick suggestion on how to find something in the 1920 census if you know the Enumeration district in the 1910 census? I know the person I am looking for is in EnumDist 109, but they don't go that high in 1920. You would think that someone would/could have come up with an overlay or something to make the searching easier. Any suggestions? William
Looking for help with a death record for Sarah (Riley) Minard, who I have last located in 1910 census living in Elysia City, Loraine County, OHIO, with daughter and son-in-law (Thomas E & Mary Jane Smith). She was 81 in this census. I will take a look at 1920 but I do believe that she died before then. If anyone can help me with the death records for this geography or that have the death information on this MINARD, I would be most grateful. Mary, I'm the one who started the thread about Cromwell. I had merely been curious about how large the company was and how long it existed. Apparently one of my husband's ancestors (great uncle) worked there when he registered for the draft in 1917 and again in 1920 after he was discharged from the Army. I haven't brought up Mapquest yet, but think I can get the general idea with the streets which Nancy mentioned. > Was someone looking for particular info about Cromwell Steel? > > When you look at a current map of the city of Lorain, look in the area > > that is southwest of Root Rd. and Colorado Ave. Thanks, Cathy in San Diego, CA (and clueless about local OH locations)

Hi ist, I just received a copy of the Elyria High School and Elyria West High School Alumni Directory. I will do look-ups. Debby
Shirley H. has reminded all the listers about the Oberlin Archives. The Mudd Learning Center (college library) is simply a great day long adventure too. Ed is a Charter member of the Lorain County Chapter of OGS and other gen groups for years. He is a great researcher, many of us have worked with him for years. He has taken part in most most of the LC projects and publications for years. He has published his own family too. Ed is kept very busy at the archives, is swamped every time I see him. He & his wife are also extremely active in O.H.I.O down in Oberlin. Please be advised that because Oberlin College necessarily may have some research fees/copying fees involved when compiling with requests, be sure that you take advantage of all the FREE lookup ups first on the http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen/lookups.htm and the http://www.oberlin.edu/~EOG/People.html http://www.oberlin.edu/~archive/ -- Nancy M.
