    1. [OHLORAIN] William Saiss Matthias
    2. ALLEN K HALLER
    3. Seeking information on William Saiss Matthias: born 1817, probably in Wales. Died 18 Jan 1860, ae 43 yrs, Rochester. Buried at Rochester Center Cemetery under name GARISS, Matthias William (an error). Married Martha Wing Fay 17 Mar 1844, Lorain County. Martha Wing Fay Matthias tombstone lists last name as Fay not Matthias. She died 6 October 1887 at 71 yrs. I notice a newspaper 'Lorain County Eagle' published 1857-1861 which may have an article about this mystery. Any and all help would be very much appreciated. Mary O. on Puget Sound

    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] Ancestry.com US Census subscription
    2. Jean, I tried ancestry.com for three months and now have it for a year. I think it was easy to read, (just make sure you download the viewer lol) I didnt at first. Now that they have some indexed its easier too. The ones that are not indexed you have to search through unless you know what county. Of course I had some help from Nancy on here, she told me where to find some of my relatives in the township. I think on the whole its good. It goes down some like anything else. The census for 1950 before is indexed. The 1920 is being indexed. Census alone I think is worth it. I didnt find any of my family anywhere else in the ancestry except the census. Dee

    3. I too have a subscription to ancestry's census database and I agree with your reference to it's ease of use productivity. However, I would suggest that it is better to save an image in their existing file format, rather than the final resolution you desire (unless you are ready to cut and past something into a document of course). By saving the file "as is", you can use the same free plug-in to your browser that is available on ancestry.com to look at them on your disk and zoom in and out just as easy as online. Also, if you send the file to a relative or friend, you can tell them to download the free plugin from ancestry to view the record. Lastly, you can always make a zoom-in jpg file later if you want. 2. Thank you to everyone who was so kind to answer my question regarding the subscription to Ancestry.com. I'm not familiar with the subcription services and I do appreciate the information and feedback you gave me. I always know that the people on this list are so kind to share their expertise and knowledge. Thanks again. Now I know what the Easter Bunny can get me! Jean

    3. I have a subscription to Ancestry's US Census database and found it very productive. The images can be enlarged so that you can read them quite easily. They also can be copied or printed. If you copy them you need to make sure that you have the image at the resolution you want to copy or you may not be able to read it afterwards. Some of the censuses have been indexed so that you can search for the individual via the index and then go straight to the image area that the name is located. I cannot remember, since I belong to another service that has images, but you may have to page forward a page or two, if the name is not on the 1 page. They are continuously adding to the indexes, but if you know where you want to look already, you can easily go to the correct page using the enumeration districts and then it is a page by page search just like you would do at a library, if you do not know the exact page to go to. I would say that I got my money's worth and have an annual subscription, since I periodically need to return to look up someone. I believe that you can also get it monthly, if you really only need to access it for a short time, since the monthly rate will cost you much more for a year than the annual rate. Hope this helps you with your decision making. 2. Doris E.Hallgren
    3. Jean, I have used this subscription for some time. Every day it is becoming more useful. I could not manage without it...or not very happily. I live in Florida. The local library has a very good collection of materials about the southeastern US. My people were ALL Yankees. They lived in New England and then Ohio, Michigan and on further to the middle west...Iowa & Kansas in particular. I have to order in EVERYTHING through the Family History Center. They have but one printer, and it frequently is not working. Since I have subscribed to the Census I have been able to locate and print all the images I could ever want. They have added the indexes to many of the censuses and more are coming. They now promise to have all the 1930 census images on line within 3 months, with indexes also available on line by the end of the year. You have the capability of printing part of a page or all of it. Be sure to download their free MrSID program. I am NOT an Ancestry employee, but I sure am an Ancestry.com fan. I also subscribe to the database subscription, and find new leads all the time. There are times when the access is a little slow, when all the rest of the world is trying to get to the Census, but usually the pages just pop right up. I am fortunate to have a cable modem and that really helps. For the past month or so everything has really come up fast. I have learned how to maneuver around the pages pretty rapidly...it comes with practice...and can get right to what I want. It really makes a difference looking at the actual page, because you can see where transcribers have mis-read things, and you can wander around and find other relatives maybe on the next page...it is WONDERFUL. It is easy to magnify the image so that you can read it. I cannot recommend it enough. To coin a phrase....:"Try it..You'll like it." dhallgren

    3. It is not perfect but since I do a lot of research, I find it well worth while. I will be their customer until something better comes along. I do NOT do any Ancestry.com look-ups for people, as it would be unethical. They are running a business & I accepted all their terms when I joined. You should weigh the pros & cons about joining any service. -- Nancy M. 3. I use the census at Ancestry almost daily (no I won't do lookups). I found the copies to be very good, and for me worth the money. The nearest library that has that much census information for me is either Burton (Detroit) or Library of Michigan (Lansing). Although driving to Lansing 1 1/2 hours) is doable, it gets expensive going there every day. Detroit is closer but not as user friendly. I'd pay again. I think that the Ancestry Census site is worthwhile, if you have a DSL, cable or other high-speed connection. If you have an ordinary dial-up connection, the images take FOREVER to download. Also, the index only places the person within the precinct; it does not tell you what page they are on. This means that you may have to search a lot of pages to find the folks you want. It's been awhile since I used it, but that's how it worked then. Regards, Byron byron.bray@cmug.com

    3. Subscribers, It sounded promising to me, so I downloaded Ged Link but following that, they asked for membership money....At that point I decided to reconsider as I belong to many fee based sites & databases. Hope those of you who have joined have great results. I got also bad vibes when they did not explain about fees before I took the time & trouble to download. I still use a slow 56K dial-up connection and so it took a while. At the March meeting of the Computer Assisted Genealogy Group (CAGG) in Fairview Park Library, I hope to talk to others about it. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH
