    3. I am reasoning that the executor/excutrix could apply for the one time SS death benefit, because that person is legally bound to see that final illness and any burial expenses are taken care of. You can get a copy of the final estate records, who inherited, who was paid what, etc. It is a public document. They are supposed to make a final estate report to the court within a year of the death but frequently that time is extended by merely applying for an extension. Often an attorney, acting as the executor, applies for an extension. Have had that personal experience. BTW, trust records are not public. -- Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH

    1. [OHLORAIN] ss death benefit
    2. NM Meyers
    3. When my Mother died, I applied for her one-time death benefit, I think it was 250.00. It is it meant to be applied to the burial costs. My Mother was only 53, was still employed and not receiving any monthly SS checks. At the time, in 1973, I was clueless, and the local funeral director told me of this and in fact he took me to the local SS office to apply for it. This death benefit is available, regardless of any life insurance policy, if they had ever paid into the SS system. Many people do not know to apply for this benefit. This does not apply for retired teachers & government employees who are "covered" under their own plans. Beyond that, the monthly SS benefits are intended,of course, for the dependent and/or disabled children and a disabled spouse if she has been receiving benefits already from her husbands SS account. When she becomes SS age then she can apply for regular monthly benefits. A side note, neither of my parents death benefits ever appeared on the SSDI website that we researchers love to use. Have heard that same scenario from some others. If you happen to have the SS number, you can still easily apply for the application by printing out the form from the web, but it has tripled in price the last couple of years. -- Nancy M. 3. You'll want to check with the Soc. Sec. Administration to verify this, but I recall from my parents' deaths that it is either dependent minor children, and/or disabled dependent adult children. And of course, surviving spouse. Not sure who else could... but a "normal" adult child is not qualified to receive the benefit from a parent's death. 3. I usually take a lot of pictures since 1950's but now I sure wish instead of being interested about living on a farm, that I would have taken a photo of that diner as I can still remember it looking like a streetcar and have seen only one since and that was more modernized at the Ford Museum but interesting to see the cheap prices of food. Sylvia. Good Luck with the diners! -----Original Message----- From: OHLORAIN-D-request@rootsweb.com <OHLORAIN-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: OHLORAIN-D@rootsweb.com <OHLORAIN-D@rootsweb.com> Date: Monday, April 01, 2002 1:03 AM Subject: OHLORAIN-D Digest V02 #82

    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] 1881 Canadian Census
    2. Ruth Ann, Thank you for sharing your 1881 Canadian Census. Hope you are not overwhelmed with requests. Here is mine. James Lewis b. abt 1803 in England. Widower. He might have a grandson John Bradley Lewis B. 1863 living with him. They were living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada If John is not with his grandfather he might be found listed alone. John Bradley Lewis B. 1863 Might have a wife Catherine b. 1864 listed with him. They had a child born in 1882 so they might have been married in 1881. They should also be living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. If John Bradley Lewis was not yet married, his wife Catherine Fraser should still be with her parents so maybe she will be listed with them: Peter Fraser, wife Catherine daughter Catherine B. 1864 As you can see I have a lot of maybes. Any information would be really helpful. Thank you for your help. Geneva Wilford GenevaCW@aol.com

    3. The National Archives facility in Waltham, Mass., opened at 12:01 AM this morning, and shortly thereafter I was among the first in the nation to view the 1930 census. I looked at Camden, Brighton, Pittsfield, Henrietta, & Russia Twps., and Oberlin Village, plus a few EDs in Cleveland and Youngstown before I had to leave to go to work. I'm pleased to report that the quality of the microfilm is very high and virtually everything I looked at was quite legible. They apparently did use up all that disappearing ink in 1910! Now, I wonder where my father was in 1930, as he wasn't where he was supposed to be. :-( Bob Oliphant Westford, Mass.
