Thanks again Alice. Norma
Hello Norma, Yes, you did send me a nice thank you. I am really glad I could help someone. Alice
I'm hoping someone can tell me what constituted a "lot" in Lorain Ct circa 1850-1900. Based on notes on the Platt map, I'm guessing 164 acres. Thanks Shirley HAAS Hulett San Diego
What! Me an Ancestor? One minute you're in Grandma's kitchen eating cookies, & the next--you ARE the grandma making cookies. Don't look now, but you're an ancestor! The time to write the story of your life is now, don't you think? For some basic guidance, read an easy three part article about this project that has many people procrastinating: http://www.clevelandseniors.com/family/genealogy.htm Be sure to read thru to the end of part three. I remember when I was kid there was a pond and an old abandoned building and I think people called it the gas house and I wondered why because we didn't have any oil around. It was north of cherry ridge golf course and the cross road that ran east ;west I think was Detroit Ave. The North south road I think was river road and it had a big hill and that was called "Gass house Hill. People would test cars on the hill.----- Original Message ----- Ken From: "NatureGem" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 5:10 AM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] Logan Gas Company Plant > Hi Deb, > I never heard of them being in Sheffield, but maybe they had a local > office. > There was a Logan Natural Gas and Fuel Co. that was in Columbus, Ohio and > in > Westerville, and served the Fostoria area, Chillicothe, and at least > Fairfield County and Ross County, possibly other places, but that's not > near > Lorain County. Would like to correspond with Hurd/Herd researchers who might know information on Harrison or Seneca Herd/Hurd who resided in Lorain Co. Harrison was there at least 1850-1880. Particularly interested in information of wives and any connection to ELLIOTT family. Sarah
Hi Deb, I never heard of them being in Sheffield, but maybe they had a local office. There was a Logan Natural Gas and Fuel Co. that was in Columbus, Ohio and in Westerville, and served the Fostoria area, Chillicothe, and at least Fairfield County and Ross County, possibly other places, but that's not near Lorain County. They existed from around 1895 and later changed their name to Logan Gas Company. Then I believe around 1930, their leases were taken over by a company called Ohio Fuel Gas Company, and that's who they then became. I wouldn't be surprised though if some small plant or gas lines were piped into Sheffield since 1895 is about when the U.S. Steel plant began and grew quickly, bringing in tons of workers for years, and the whole mill backs Sheffield. They may have needed gas brought in or a new plant constructed. Matt Kocsis is a historian for the Sheffield/Avon area and knows about the Burrell house and grounds, the Metroparks at James Day/French Creek, and since that's all Sheffield and around the mill, he may know of a site in the area where an oil plant may have operated. His number used to be 1-800-526-7275 or 949-5200 (I think this is his office number at the MetroParks). You might want to try him. Alice, I am not sure if I thanked you or not for responding to my Claubaugh plea. I do thank you very much. I always feel very good when someone takes the time to respond. I will look for the various spelling as you suggest. Thanks again, Norma/Ohio
Would anyone have any information about the Logan Gas Company Plant in the Sheffield area? I'd like to know exactly where it was located, owners, etc. Thanks!! Deb [email protected]

Thanks Deb, no, he does not necesariy have to be dead or in Lorain Co. I will check out the insurance man. thanks again! Pat
Pat, I noticed a lot of Zedakers originally in Poland, Ohio with a John Campbell Zedaker that might have been a grandfather who died in 1949. Of the addresses that Pat sent you, I would guess the John C. Zedaker she listed in Youngstown might be the man you're looking for. He sells insurance out of his home -- 8560/8561 Market St. 330-726-8861. Did he have to be deceased or in Lorain County? Hello Norma, I used to work for Shelby Business Forms in North Olmsted. The main plant was in Shelby, Ohio -- the reason I mention this is there was a man named Mark Claybaugh that worked in Shelby -- just another variation of the name. I have read tips on this list that sometimes the spelling is different from family member to family member. Don't know if it will help. Alice
