Does anyone know the name of a German Baptist Church located in Wellington, Ohio in the 1930's? If so, is it still around, or did it incorporate with another church? My mom said she attended a "German Baptist Church" in Wellington when she was growing up, and I'm looking for a baptism record for her. I tried the town hall, but the nice lady there didn't know about one. Thanks for your help! Deb Mohler
I, too, had such a grandmother. She even had good aprons that she wore when she went visiting. It was a rare moment to see her without an apron and usually it was on the day of the family reunion. Thanks for sharing. I hqave a Gertrude Proudfoot at North West Ridge Cemetery. Very little is know about her Marilyn
I have a brochure of graduates from Wellington Public schools from 1873-1912. Also class of 1921. I'll do a look up if anyone is interested. Bud Burge
Bud, More "footwork" for you to sort thru. There are records of many burials before 1899 at the Ridgelawn Cemetery. So I suggest,as a next step, to look at any surnames affiliated with Enoch Bateman's family by viewing: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/lorain/cemeteries/ridgelawn/ Look at the records of any of those family plots where someone could have given a burial spot for Enoch. Also try looking at burials in the potter's field there, both by name and chronologically. Most cemeteries were using them at that time. By chance the Infirmary record should have read Elyria Twp Cem. instead of just Elyria Cem., I would also try the North Murray Ridge Cemetery by contacting for burial information contact: North Murray Ridge Cemetery, 328 Broad St, Elyria OH 44035, Cemetery Division, Stan, Supervisor, 440-322-3896 or contact [email protected] Marily Teyler has done extensive work on the North Murray Ridge Cem. To cover any other bases, I would also consider looking at any affiliated surnames at the Carlisle Twp Cem. just down the road from the Infirmary. To contact: South Murray Ridge Cemetery, Carlisle Road Department, 11969 Lagrange Rd, Lagrange OH 44050, 1-440-458-6688. Keep me posted if possible. > Hi Nancy Meyers, > As you probably remember you found that in the lists > you were abstracting Enoch Bateman is supposed to be > buried in the Elyria Ridgelawn Cemetery. Hi Nancy Meyers, As you probably remember you found that in the lists you were abstracting Enoch Bateman is supposed to be buried in the Elyria Ridgelawn Cemetery. However, on checking with Mary Ann at the Ohio Room at the Elyria Library she could not find him on any of the lists. She said the cemetery was indexed only a few years ago. She had no further suggestions as to where to proceed from here. If you have any ideas they would be appreciated. Enoch died 9-06-1899. Thanks, Bud
Thanks Norma, I look forward to your look up. Bud
There are Bateman's buried in Milan Cemetery in Erie County. In fact I think I may still have them on a disk. I will check. Norma
Not all tombstones lay flat on the ground. A lot of the old ones where upright slabs and only be obscure only by a big snow drift. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy Meyers" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 13, 2004 7:36 AM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] Enoch Bateman Burial > Bud, > Info that I am still abstracting on births, deaths & > admissions at the Lorain County Infirmary, says that > Enoch Bateman was buried in the "Elyria Cem." > At the Elyria Public Library, you can check the > Ridgelawn cem info in the looseleaf notebooks that was > photocopied & compiled by the late attorney Howard > Saddler. Researchers, There are some of us left who were privileged to know the late Dorthy A. GRUNDY, born 1908. She was a special and gracious lady and a long-time genealogist & Chapter member who died 5 September 1993. As she aged, becoming weak and frail, I often would meet her at the courthouse just to lift & move those huge heavy volumes of records for her so that she could carefully read them. Also took her to LDS & WRHS libraries. She was the widow of Leman GRUNDY who was a grandson of Grantham GRUNDY. Dorothy had collected an almost complete record of the GRUNDY & REDMAN families. Grantham Grundy arrived from England about 1854, settled in Brownhelm in 1857. His son Charles was born in So.Amherst in 1864, he wed Eliza Jane Dyer of Wellington. Their son Leman wed Dorothy Agnes SKIVER 1908-1993. The copies of her carefully documented papers are on file in the Hicks Library of the LCHS. ===== Nancy M. I know of at least 3 John Plato's from the Amherst area -- the grandfather, son, and grandson, although I have not heard of any wife named Frances. The Plato family also had a family clothing store for several generations in Amherst, and Amherst Village was at one time called Plato (also The Corners, Amherstville, and North Amherst). ----- Original Message ----- From: "L.R." <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 14, 2004 2:04 AM Subject: [OHLORAIN] My surnames, HENGEN, PLATO, GRUNDY, SCHNITLZER, WENZEL > I have been working hard on my genealogy for Lorain County > > Nicholas HENGEN and wife Sophia SCHNITZLER (both german born) where in the US in > the 1850;s. I have been working hard on my genealogy for Lorain County Nicholas HENGEN and wife Sophia SCHNITZLER (both german born) where in the US in the 1850;s. According to Sophia's obit she was a long time resident (65 yrs) of Amherst, however they seemed to ride a circuit between, OH, IN and MI, I suspect family were in those states. Sophia had at least one brother in the US with her, George SCHNITZLER/SNITZLER, he lived in Avon. (think he had something like 11 children) Nick and Sophia's children Elizabeth m. James FLOOD and secondly Grantham GRUNDY Frances m. John H. PLATO ....i know they lived in Amherst, I was told he was wealthy and had something to so with like a coal company. J.M. m. Dear Nancy Meyers, Thank you so very, very much for the info re Bateman. It looks as though I've got many leads to follow. However, with the snow and all It will be hard to find old Enoch Bateman's grave. I suppose there is nothing we can do about that. Regards, Bud

See C-T Aug. 25, 1932 for her obit. Name misspelled as Selma here and on OHS. You can find Selina in the 1930 census living with her son George H. Bateman in Lake Co.IN. She is probably buried there. ===== Nancy M. A 1900 church history has current and former members of the FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH in Elyria Ohio. Bateman, Anna E. came into membership by letter in 1880, left by letter in 1898. Bateman, Enoch came into membership by letter in 1880 and left by letter in 1898. Bateman, Joseph A. was a member in 1897, no other info. Bateman, Salina came to membership in 1880, left by letter in 1898. If you contact the church clerk, there maybe info as to where they trasferred their membership to. ===== Nancy M. Bud, Info that I am still abstracting on births, deaths & admissions at the Lorain County Infirmary, says that Enoch Bateman was buried in the "Elyria Cem." At the Elyria Public Library, you can check the Ridgelawn cem info in the looseleaf notebooks that was photocopied & compiled by the late attorney Howard Saddler. They have been there since about 1989 but were not always in the card catalog as they are now. Hope this helps. --- Bud Burge <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi, > > Enoch Bateman died in the Infirmary in what was > Elyria or Carlyle September 6th, 1899 at age 71.
