Hi Jane, If you are considering upgrading, let me suggest you try the new program RootsMagic2 ( www.RootsMagic.com ) which in my opinion is a much better and easier to use program than is FTM. It has an excellent users group which has the developer as a regular participant, and among the participants on the list are a number of former FTM users. The users list is at [email protected] Data entry is easy; it has a wonderful array of lists and reports; gedcoms are easily exported and imported. Yet it has many features you would only find in a program like The Master Genealogist. You could try exporting a gedcom file from your current version of FTM, downloading the demo of RM, and try it out to see if you like the feel of the program. Obviously, not everyone likes the same program or programs, so you may find you either like it or want to try the new FTM or Legacy or something else. I tried FTM once abt 15 years ago. My primary program is Rootsmagic (Used to be FamOrigins) or Master Genealogist. Much more user friendly (in my opinion). When people ask abt software when I do my speaking engagements I tell them to do the demo's, and find one that works for them. Everyone has different needs and different comfort levels. Finding a software that works for you is one of the most important parts of doing genealogy. I need unlimited note and source capability as well as unlimited facts that I can generate myself. I looked until I found one that worked for me. HI Nancy, I have been considering upgrading to FTM 2005. Does it take the place of the old version? Does it upgrade the old version like all of the other upgrades or do you have to re-enter the information? Jane
I went from version 10 to FTM 2005. Thru the years, there are some favorites things I wished they had kept the same. I usually upgrade to every other version that comes out. I just could not justify the extra dollars, especially when we are dealing with so many databases that are fee based. Plus there seems to be no perfect program. Jane, You do not have to re-enter your data. When you play the demo tour, it will cover that point. Remember to be very careful of what you actually do click on after you install FTM. Some times a person will click on a wrong line item and unknowingly send their data to FTM and where it can become accessible to others (for the price of a membership) I am very careful of that. There is already too much mis-information that some of my distant cousins, who were new to genealogy and the ethics of good research. They posted some of my "STB' info on the internet. Even though they had agreed not to post it, they are as yet unwilling to correct their mistakes. I notified them years ago, as well as Genealogy.com, but it did not inspire them to correct any data. Live and learn! None the less, I do prefer FTM of all the four gen programs I have used. Nancy > I have been considering upgrading to FTM 2005. Does > it take the place > of the old version? Fellow researchers, If you are thinking of upgrading your FTM program or buying for FTM for the very first time, you can take this little tour. Got my newest FTM CD two weeks ago http://www.genealogy.com/cpc/FTM2005_TourHighRes.html?priority=8010537 Nancy
I remember the bank, but in the 1950 it was a different kind of bank. It gave mortgages or some thing and was a small orgainazation. I found a BUCK family in Cortlandville NY in the 1850 census that I cannot place. Philander or Gilbert Philander are names that have turned up in the descendants of Ebenezer Buck and Thankful BALDWIN of New Milford, CT., so I would not be surprised if this Philander BUCK is from the same CT line of Bucks. Some of their descendants ended up in Camillus, Onondaga, NY and some went on to Lorain Co. Ohio. Researching the 1850 census for Central NY Bucks I found the following on the family of Philander BUCK who was a physician in Cortlandville, Cortland County, NY. Since he was a physician, I wonder if anyone did a write-up inany of the biographical books that were common around 1890 to 1900. Summary of Philander BUCK - 17 Jan 2005 ------------------------------------------------------------ Name: Philander BUCK Sex: Male Birth abt 1786 in CT Marriage to Lurana [BUCK] Children Orion J. BUCK (abt 1824 - ) Urania BUCK (abt 1826 - ) Sally M. BUCK (abt 1829 - ) Mura BUCK (abt 1831 - ) Hester A. BUCK (abt 1837 - ) Philander BUCK Jr. (abt 1839 - ) Sources: 1. 1850 U.S. Federal Census (Washington D.C., National Archives microfilm publications), Cortlandville, Cortland Co., NY, p. 368. Please let me know if anyone can place this family. Margaret Scheffler
Just wondering if anyone remembers the bank on 3rd Street in Elyria--next to the old Columbia Gas office. I know it was called Freedom Federal and was bought by Bank One--which then transferred to FirstMerit. I think there was another name in there, but I cannot remember it. Any help? I checked for an article under various spellings of Dellefield without success. The earliest date I found was 1896. You might try writing the local library to see if they have the paper on microfilm for the 1880 period. Pat
Correction... I take that back -- I believe it was Pleasantview Sanitorium at the corner of N. I am wondering if anyone who still has access to the Ancestry historical newspapers would mind looking for a write up for me. I am trying to find something about 2 brothers in our family and their friend who were all struck by lightning in a barn during a major storm and killed. The date I have that it was supposed to have occurred is Sep 4 1880. Their farm was where the sanitarium later was, I believe at the corner of Rt. 113 and Rt. 58 in Amherst. The two young mens' names were George Henry Dellefield (age 23) and Karl Anton Dellefield (age 20). I don't know who the other person who died was, but I would be curious to know that also. Thanks! In a message dated 1/17/2005 11:01:05 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: The OLD LADIES HOME located at W.Second & West Ave. in Elyria opened about January 1,1902. It was a handsome three-story home. See photo on page 13 of PICTURESQUE ELYRIA, 1903. This was not a home for indigent people as the Lorain Co. I have 807 W. Ave. as last address of Alice Elliott LIPPY in 1936, I believe from a City directory. She died at Elyria Home for Aged (death certificate), same address, which is also same address now given for ELYRIA UNITED METHODIST VILLAGE. So what I'm trying to nail down is: would they have retained the old records? Sarah
Richard, Since others have provided you with Charles's obit. I can provide you one more piece of information on Eliza. She died shortly before August 18, 1902 based on an article in the paper citing a resolution by a group called the hive about losing her as a member. I could not find any reference to her death in the preceding issues of the paper, so I am not sure if I missed it or it was listed in some other paper that the edition is not available on Ancestry.com. No listing was found for Charles's marriage in the 1888 or 1889 timeframe. Again, it is probably due to the pertinent edition not being available or some error in the spelling of his name that prevents the search engine from finding it. Hope this helps! I have been looking at too many census records lately! In my first posting I referenced the 1910 census. That is not correct. It was actually the 1900 census, which would have put the Charles and Eliza Shepherd's marriage in the 1888 or 1889 time frame. Time to log off for a while --- sorry for the error! Fellow Researchers, If you need info on a specific death that occurred in the City of Elyria or at the Lorain County Infirmary (Carlisle Twp) between 1908-1956, please email privately. The OLD LADIES HOME located at W.Second & West Ave. in Elyria opened about January 1,1902. It was a handsome three-story home. See photo on page 13 of PICTURESQUE ELYRIA, 1903. This was not a home for indigent people as the Lorain Co. Infirmary was. I do have a list of twenty-six ladies who died at the Old Ladies Home but are buried in various cemeteries within the county and several out of the county. This particular list covers deaths ranging from the year 1911 thru 1930, and their ages at the time of death, were from 72 years to 93 years. So if you are missing a little old lady in this time frame mailto:[email protected] Nancy Meyers
