Hi Anna, I think we traded information 3 or 4 years ago and didn't find a connection. My WEBERs were Mathias Joseph WEBER and Anna Margaret MERTES from Gevenich, Germany. Son John Peter married Gertrude MINNICH in Shefield. They lived in Bryant, ID for a while until Gertrude died, then returned to North Ridgeville. Peter's son Nicolas moved to Colorado, then to Cleveland. He was my ggrandfater. Robert -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "M. Robert, who are your Webers? I have William Weber, b. Dec 1876, md. 1898 to Catherine Koepke, d. 1950; Daughters Matilda b.1898, d. 1973 and Anna b.1900 d. 1964; Matilda married Harland Martin and had daughters Kay, Marg and Judy; Anna married Herman Short and had sons Jim and Ted. William's father was Carl August Weber - all info I have on him shows he was in Vincennes, Indiana (where William was born) - the 1920 census shows him in Amherst with William, both widowed. From other research I've done, I know there were two more children for August - one a female who died before 1910, and the other unknown. William left Vincennes to go to Amherst to teach music at the Lutheran school - I've always wondered why he'd move so far away, if there weren't a family connection of some sort. But I cannot find it yet. Just curious if we have any connections. I have some WEBERs from that area from about 1850 to 1900. But I don't recognize the other names, so it may be another WEBER line. What do you have so far? I found in some paperwork a request for bounty land by widow of 1812 ancestor. With other things is the "Proof of Claimants Loyalty".......essentially what it is saying is that she professes her loyalty to the government. It also has 2 witnesses stating they have known her for 5 years and saying they believe she has been loyal to the government. Does anyone have an explanation why this paperwork was necessary. I do know that no records could be found on him in order for her to get a pension/bounty. I believe probably because he only served for 4 months. She couldn't produce his discharge because her house had burned down. From going through this paperwork, it appears she must have been turned down. Viola
Very briefly, the Declaration of Intent - sometimes called "First Papers" - was the first of a two step process to becoming a citizen. After residing in this country for two years, the alien could file a Declaration of Intent in any court of record, usually on the county level. After waiting a minimum of three years, the alien could then petition the court to become a citizen and receive his naturalization papers. These two steps did not have to take place in the same court or the same location. The process appears to have improved after 1906. For a description of the naturalization process and some of it's exceptions over the years, go to www.rootsweb.com Click on RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees under the Getting Started Menu. The menu will lead you to naturalization explanations. Another site is www.nara.gov Good luck! Jean

The last genealoghy calss several years ago,the instructor told us of a date when the US started using decloration of Intent. I don't know what year that was. Prior to that time the first papers were not use. I don't remember the date, but I am sure someone on the list knows. My point is, you might be waisting time looking for papers that never existed My orginal immergrent of 1832 only filed papers in common plas court stating he renounced the "Father Land". That was all the information there was. I know what the father land means. Others renounced England and France Ken
Thanks again for the good suggestions, Shirley. As a matter of fact I was contacted about two weeks ago regarding a posting on a mailing list from 2000! Never give up! Jean
Jane, So happy to hear they are safe... Paula
Hi, I've just registered my search for the name "DALY" name and noitced that "Mark Weber" was also searching the same spelling back in 1999. Tried his email address, but mail is returned undeliverable. So Mark, if you're still out there, please let me know, or if anyone knows a new email for him, also please let me know. Many thanks, Patricia Daly-Zake
Thanks for your response, Shirley. It would be nice to know what home village information the Declaration of Intent might contain, but I was also looking for his date of arrival and his age. I have found his wife and younger children on a passenger list, but have been unable to locate him and his eldest son. Rumor has it that g-grandfather left Ireland because of a confrontation with a patrol of British soldiers. I would like to do some newspaper research regarding this incident, but I need to narrow down the time frame. It's nice to know that some of these records have survived. Jean
Thank you, Sue. I didn't think about other types of "Declarations". Sounds like your research yielded some interesting documents. Once again, people and their problems don't seem to change through the ages. Jean
My best suggestion is to 1. Post it wherever you can think of on GenWeb sites and be sure to retain the email address you use in these posts...(I've been contact as long as 4 years after posting.) Perhaps searching Filby's Passenger Lists...Of course, there are more than 50 volumes, but that's how I found my Gr Gr Grandparents 1854 emmigration from Markgroeningen Wuertt Germany to Liverpool Ohio. Hi Jean: I haven't found declarations of intent in Ohio, but I have found them in California for about 1860. The one I found was a declaration of a woman's independence from a husband she was divorcing. There was also a declaration for her daughter, saying that she approved of her intent to marry. Sue
