    3. Interesting, Jane. This does help. So James Marsh, b. in England 9 Oct 1858, son of John and Louisa (Sutton) Marsh who d. 30 March 1883 (buried with Marsh family in Butternut Ridge) left a son, Charles B. Marsh, b. 1880 (gravestone) or 1881 (census). Charles' mother was Ann Alice Grills... but who was "Henry," listed as their six-year old son in the 1880 census? And Ann bore him at age 14? Henry is listed on the census as b. in Ohio. Charles was living on North Island Road in North Eaton, OH with his paternal uncle, William Grills and his grandmother, Alice (Gist) Grills in 1900 (census). He was mentioned in his Aunt Ellen's will as residing in Columbia Station, OH in 1924. That is all I know, so far, although it is good to know who his mother was. I wish I understood why the Marsh family disconnected from James' family after his death. I'll let you know if I learn anything else about Charles Marsh; thanks for the information. There is further information about Annie Grills (Marsh) (Grills') children with whom she was residing in 1930 in the census; they were Harley, Harvey and Warren. Do you have access to that information? If not I am happy to transcribe it for you. 1. MARSH (and GRILLS?) family puzzle and vital records question
    2. Cynthia Amidon
    3. Good Morning, I am working on a family who used to live on my farm in North Eaton and census records have yielded some interesting aberrations that I need to research further. The family is that of English immigrant John Marsh (1811-1888), his wife Louisa (Sutton) (1821-1905) and their children, Mary E. "Ellen" (1851-1924), James (1858-1883) and William (1857-1924). Although Ellen and William are listed as single in every census until their deaths within a few days of each other in 1924; in the 1880 census Ellen is marked "widowed/divorced." In the same census, James is listed as married to "Annie" (20 years old, b. England) with a six-year old son, Henry. James disappears by the next census; he apparently died...and there is no Anne/Annie/Anna Marsh anywhere that I can find. But John Marsh's 1888 probate record lists his wife, Ellen, William and a "grandson," Charlie B. And Ellen and William are listed as dying without heirs, although Ellen left $500 to Charles B. Marsh, her "nephew," then living in Columbia Station (1924)although the majority of her estate went to the children of a cousin. There is no mention of James' wife and son, even though they lived in the same house in 1880. The only record of a Charles B. Marsh is one living in North Eaton in 1900 with a William Grills (across the street from the farm where the Marsh's lived), listed as his "nephew." Louisa's will and probate in 1905 only list Ellen and William as heirs. The Marsh family gravestone in Butternut Ridge Cemetery lists a "Charles (1880-1948). Anyone know anything about this family? My second question is whether there are Vital Records available for this area that might shed light on this family. Any other suggestions for research? Thanks in advance, Cindy

    2. Nancy Meyers
    3. One of my independent Lorain County genealogy projects is abstracting LC divorces, from various sources, up thru 1930. Todate have over 500. If you want to send a name & date of a divorce that was granted in Lorain County, will add it to this list. mailto:[email protected] Alas these solo projects take a very long time. This divorce project was started in 2001. When completed, it will be donated on a CD to local libraries and the OGS Library in Mansfield. BTW, it is snowing here in Lorain OH on this April 2nd. 3. Hi Joe - My son-in-law's grandmother was a Radcliffe and her family was from the Camden area. My daughter is on the Lorain Co. list and I will have her get in touch with you regarding what info she has on the Radcliffe family (don't think she has much but might be able to help with some info). Also the Betts, Radcliffe, Hurd and Mills names are in the Brighton and Camden areas. There was a Bessie Foote that lived in Rochester Twp which is south of Camden and Brighton. Also there is a Carra Perkins Foote buried in the Rochester Center Cemetery. If I can help in some way please let me know and I will do what I can. Are you in the Lorain County area? 3. Fellow researchers, Just a word of encouragement.....if you have never heard Henry Tinman speak, then I hope that you can make the April 11th Chapter meeting at the North Ridgeville Library. You are in for a real treat. He has spoken for the Chapter several times in past years. He is a highly respected speaker on the OGS circuit and is an author of several genealogy publications. ( am fortunate to own all of them). Henry is aka the Huron County historian. He broadcast a weekly genealogy radio program for years from Norwalk. He is an active member of the SAR. His delightful Marty almost always accompanies him at conferences and seminars. Hope to see some of you there. Nancy Nancy M. 1. Hattie's Gravesite
    2. Margaret
    3. Story from the Tuesday, March 29, 2005 Edition of the Chronicle Telegram Dispute halts grave digging Work stops at ‘Blue Girl’ burial site Shawn Foucher The Chronicle-Telegram HUNTINGTON TWP. — A disagreement between a resident and land owner over a township property where a 142-year-old grave was discovered last week has brought a screeching halt to any further discoveries at the location, according to both men. Dan Dailey found the grave of 3-year-old Hattie Adele Pratt on March 24 while digging a posthole in a barn on the property. Hattie was the subject of the portrait “Blue Girl,” painted by famed “Spirit of ’76” artist Archibald Willard, who died in 1918. According to a newspaper article from the late-19th century, Hattie died of Diphtheria in 1862. Willard painted the portrait of the girl from a photograph taken before her death. Dailey said he was waiting to hear from Pratt family descendants before doing anything further with the grave, but Russell Pruitt, of Virginia, the man who had arranged to sell Dailey the property under a contract signed in May 2004, says the agreement has been breached. “Right at this moment, I’m going to say that I don’t want to sell to him,” Pruitt said. Pruitt said payments required under the contract have not been made and Dailey’s option to purchase has been voided. The contract calls for Dailey to make a $15,000 down payment followed by 59 consecutive monthly payments of $1,600. There are still several people interested in buying the property, Pruitt said. “I called (Dailey). I said listen, I don’t know what you’re doing over there, but don’t touch anything else,” Pruitt said. “And don’t do anything to disturb anything else. The Historical Society has talked with us, and I want to preserve the integrity and sanctuary of what is there.” Dailey said he was simply doing repairs to a barn that he thought would be his — under the contract — and had no idea something like the grave would turn up. “The alpaca farm is worth more to me than this tombstone,” Dailey said. “If I misspoke in all the excitement and said that I now own the farm, I apologize. I have the option to buy, and I was still working to pursue that option. I was just waiting for the paperwork to go through yet.” Pruitt, who bought the farm in 1964, said he believes the Pratt family is buried on the property beneath the barn floor. “I always had a feeling that the Pratt family probably did use that as their family burial plot,” Pruitt said. “I always wondered why that floor was raised up a little bit, and then it occurred to me that they may have just put some earth over it and put the floor up. It was built high for some reason — rather than have their graves desecrated, they probably just had them covered up.” Dailey said he has little interest in the graves and is simply looking to start his alpaca farm. “The grave is fascinating, but its monetary value is probably worthless,” Dailey said.

    1. Hattie's Story
    2. Margaret
    3. In today's Chronicle-Telegram from Elyria, OH is yet another article on Hattie Pratt: Story from the Sunday, March 27, 2005 Edition of the Chronicle Telegram Hattie Pratt’s death: solved Shawn Foucher The Chronicle-Telegram HUNTINGTON — It was late October, 1862. The leaves would be in the height of their color transformation, but some Lorain County boys would never see it; they were in southern states battling in the Civil War. And at the Huntington Township home of Benjamin Pratt, his 3-year-old daughter — Hattie Adele Pratt, subject of the Archibald Willard painting “Blue Girl” — was expelling the last painful breaths of her brief life on her father’s 42-acre farm. Two days ago, the cause of Hattie’s death was still a mystery to most people, but thanks to members of the Lorain County genealogical community, the cause is a mystery no more. On Thursday afternoon, while Huntington resident Dan Dailey was digging a posthole in the dirt floor of his state Route 58 barn, he plucked Hattie's marble tombstone from beneath a foot of wet earth. The county coroner is uncertain whether the site in Dailey's barn is Hattie's actual grave, and a 6-foot obelisk looming over a plot of earth in nearby Huntington Cemetery further mystifies the matter. The obelisk is inscribed with the names of four Pratt family members — Benjamin Pratt, Alta Pratt, Jerome Pratt and Hattie A. Pratt — but cemetery records do not confirm whether any bodies were actually buried in the small plot. It’s possible that the Pratt family erected the obelisk in the cemetery to ensure they were included in the town’s history, according to Tim Simonson, a board member of the Wellington Historical Society. While the site of Hattie’s tiny body may remain a mystery until Dailey and his family opt to excavate their barn, Dailey says he’s not moving ahead until he’s able to contact a Pratt family member who lives in Pennsylvania. When intrepid researchers from the Lorain County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society got wind of Dailey’s discovery, however, they leapt at the opportunity to feed their insatiable appetites for historical discovery. Lorain County birth records only date back to 1867 and newspaper items would rarely show up in an online search engine, but that didn’t stop Margaret Cheney, of Lorain, from digging a little deeper. “The genealogy community in Lorain County is a very connected group of people,” Cheney said. “Usually we help each other find the roots we’re looking for.” After reading an article in The Chronicle-Telegram on Friday, Nancy Meyers, a close friend of Cheney’s who has researched family histories for more than 40 years, recalled a book in her personal library: “Non-military Death notices from Lorain County News, 1860 to 1867,” compiled and published by Glenn A. Carruthers, formerly of Oberlin. Carruthers worked on the book as a personal project, Meyers said. “There were publications out long before Ohio records began,” Meyers said. “Lorain County News was an Oberlin newspaper; it listed all non-military deaths at the time.” On one page of the book is a listing of the death of the 3-year-old daughter of Benjamin Pratt. Hattie Adele Pratt died of diphtheria on Oct. 21, 1862.

    3. Quoted from Shawn/s C-T article this Easter morning... "When intrepid researchers from the Lorain County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society got wind of Dailey's discovery, however, they leapt at the opportunity to feed their insatiable appetites for historical discovery" I believe that this reporter has the makings of a good genealogist. Shawn was also very interested to learn that Dave Maynard (a former Elyrian and a long time lorgen mailing list subscriber), does a lot of genealogy and "reads" Chronicle-Telegram using special equipment for the blind. He plans to get in touch with my friend Dave down in NC soon. Be advised, I have officially warned this reporter that genealogy is addictive. Nancy M.
