Sherri, These records are not online. This is a microfilm collection that can be viewed at the library only. However, the library will accept mail, phone, or email requests. See the website address below. The Ohio Death Certificate Collection at the Akron-Summit Co. Library currently goes from 20 Dec. 1908 to August 1952 with plans to extend the collection up to and including 1954. If you need a Death Certificate in that time frame, go to the library website at http://www.ascpl.lib.oh.us/ and look for instructions in their Special Collections - Genealogy and Local History Section. For a death certificate for 1978, you could write to the Ohio Department of Health. See the website at http://www.odh.ohio.gov for fees and the correct mailing address, or you can contact the city where the death occured and write to the office that holds those death records. Hope this clarifies the information. Jean
Thanks for the reply. I have used the Ohio Historical site many times and ordered several copies. I guess I miss read the announcement. Jean, Can this collection of microfilms be seen at the Akron-Summit County Public Library only or can you access on the internet? Can I request a copy from my hometown in Michigan through my Library? I am looking for a Death certificate for Ohio in 1978. Would I have access to that? Thank you. If you are just looking for the death date and death certificate record info, the Ohio death record index is available on Ancestry.com. If you do not have a subscription to the Ancestry.com databases, I would be happy to look up the record for you, if you provide me what information you have on the individual you are looking for. Minimum information needed is the name and if available the date of birth to help make sure I get the right person, if more than one name comes up for the timeframe of interest. Dave, If you go to the Akron-Summit County Public Library website at http://www.ascpl.lib.oh.us/ and click on "Library Resources" you will find information under "Special Collections - Genealogy and Local History". Information is available there on how to obtain copies of the Ohio Death Certificates. This is a collection of microfilms, not a database with access on the Internet. It's nice to have access to this collection in Northern Ohio. Regards, Jean
The index is not on the internet. It is at the library on microfilm. But http://ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/death1 does has the index for 1913-1937. The Ohio Historical Society holds death certificates for the entire state of Ohio from December 20, 1908 through December 31, 1953 You may wish to visit our online Ohio Death Certificate Index for 1913-1937. Hope this helps.
Has anyone found the site yet?? I was on their web site and could find no mention of the death certificates. The following is from notes taken at our April 11 meeting. The presentation by Henry Timman gave us new insight to not overlook sometimes obscure records in our researching of our ancestors. The following information is basic information for most any county government. We know that the Probate Court of any county holds Marriage Records - usually from the beginning of the county to the present; Birth & Death records (usually from 1867-1908); Estate records-from the beginning of the county to present (this includes estates with a will and without a will); Guardianship records - from beginning of the county to present; Some counties have Naturalization records from 1855-1900; Final Record volumes - 1851 to present; Settlement Record volumes - 1851 to present; Appointment of Administrator (or Executor) volumes - 1851 to ? ; Civil Docket volumes and Court Journal volumes - 1851 to ? Local Health Departments hold Birth and Death records from Dec. 20, 1908 to the present. The Recorder's Office holds Land Deeds; Mortgage records; Miscellaneous Records and Plat Records from the beginning of the county to the present time. They also hold Soldiers Discharge records from the Civil War to the present; and Soldiers' Burial records. The Auditor's Office will hold a Militia Record from 1864-1865; and Personal and Real Estate Tax Records from the beginning of the county to present time. The Engineers Office holds road records; current tax maps and older atlases and maps. The Commissioners Office holds journals from the beginning of the county to the present; County Home records; Burial of Indigent Solders ca 1885-1920; and Coroner's Inquest Records ca 1895 - ? The Clerk of Courts office holds Journals; Law Records; and Chancery Records from the beginning of the county to the present time. They also hold Supreme Court Records; Supreme Court Law Record; and Supreme Court Chancery Record from the beginning of the county to 1851. Also you will find Naturalization Records from the beginning of the county to about 1855 - possibly after 1900 and Partition Record volumes from the beginning of the county to present. We all have to remember that all records can become important when we are looking for our ancestors. While most of us are familiar with some of the above records, probably not all of us have had the opportunity to explore all of them! So, Happy Hunting! Actually, I think I know where the old Edison school is. That's close to 113 between Edison St. and 113. The building I'm talking about is quite a bit further north almost to the corner of Griswoldm right across from Orchard Ct. A woman I talked to today confirmed that it was once called Lake Avenue School. I don't know if it had any other names before that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "kenneth" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 02, 2005 2:01 PM Subject: Re: [OHLORAIN] West Side School Bldg. Hi! I haven't been reading all the posts, so I hope this is correct information, but I saw a post before by Sue Strick about the tax records previously being in the Gates Bldg, but now being kept in buildings on the north side of Broad St. in downtown Elyria. Below is the post -- hope its helpful. "For a long time, the old tax records [about 1864 to the early 1900's]were kept in the basement [lower level] of the Administration Bldg.; then, because of space limitations, they were moved to another location. I don't remember the exact sequence, but the tax books were at one time stored in the old (then empty) Elyria Post Office building; at another time, they were kept in the basement of the former school [Gates School?] at Lake Ave. and Gateway Blvd. (I believe); and they have been moved to one or two [or three?] basement storage areas below business/office buildings on the north side of Broad Street in downtown Elyria. I'm pretty sure that's where they were the last time I talked with Dale about the subject -- in a basement storage room on the north side of Broad Street [he said the room WAS air conditioned and well-lit]. The question now is, how does a person get access or permission to view these old tax record books [which I don't believe have been microfilmed]. I suppose you would first contact the Auditor's office in the Admin. Bldg., and inquire as to the current procedure. I also don't know if there is a photocopy machine available in the current storage room. You are correct, on the name of that school. I went to school there for the first through third grades. It was, indeed, called Lake Avenue School....
