    1. Thielke
    2. Nancy Meyers
    3. Susan, Things are not always what they seem. It is possible that your Alfred Thielke may have had an earlier marriage. On June 5, 1917 an Alfred THIELKE registered for the WWI draft, as required by the law, in Lake Co. OH He apparently was living in the Grand River area, right up on the lake. He gave his marital status as married; his full name as Alfred Augusta Thielke and birth date and place as Sept. 2, 1891 in Hartford WI. (recall his cemetery burial card gave Hartford CT as his birthplace?) In 1917, he was employed as a brakeman for a railroad company. He requested to be excused from the draft as he was the sole support of his wife. (BTW, Augusta was his father's given name) Many experienced genealogists can attest to the fact there were times in that period that some men led double lives. Especially if they had a job that transported them from place to place such as the RR or the lakes. (it happened in my husband's family & my own grandfather). There just too many similarities here, not to check it out. Nancy M. Meyers, Lorain OH OGS Life Member http://www.ogs.org/ Genealogy Volunteer http://www.centurytel.net/lorgen

    3. Shirley, Perhaps I can help you with some death info if you care to contact me off line. I have in a database the death dates & burial places for people who died in Elyria and the Infirmary for the years 1908 up thru the 1990's. Often the birth date & place are included in these files as well. Thanks for letting this list know about those old funeral home records. Thought of your research as we drove by the current funeral home on 2nd street just yesterday. Nancy M. 3. The Busch-Curtis-Scheuffler Funeral Home in Elyria DOES have records from the former Sudro-Curtis Funeral Home; it does NOT have records from the former Carl Taylor Funeral Home. They have good records going back to 1957 but only information from ledgers prior to 1957.

    2. Nancy Meyers
    3. Dear Researcher, Some pieces of the THIELKE puzzle for you: Alfred C. THIELKE died at the age of 81 and was buried on May11, 1973 in Elmwood Cemetery. Lot 2031, map page 8, Lorain OH. He died of a stroke. His birthplace on the burial card is given as Hartford CT, and his residence at the time of death is given as 1311 Root Rd. Lorain. He had worked for the Great Lakes Towing Co. per the 1957, 1962, 1969 directories, & he was retired by 1973. In the mid 50's he and his wife Mildred lived at 235 E. Erie Ave. Lorain. Mildred J. THIELKE died at age 72 and was buried on Oct. 1, 1979 in Elmwood Cem. Her residence at time of death was given as Amherst. Her birth date & birthplace is listed as Locus Point OH June 1, 1907. (This is probably Locust Pt. Ottawa Co. OH) In the same Elmwood Cem. lot, there is buried a Patricia THIELKE,age 7, who died of appendicitis and was buried on Aug. 6, 1936. In 1936, the family lived at 307 Idaho Ave. Lorain at thwe time of her death. Her birthplace is typed as Cleveland OH. Please note that there were multiple typists making various errors at the Elmwood cemtery office thru the years. Please look at the 1930 census for Vermillion in Erie Co. OH. You will find them indexed under the spelling of THIELLSE. Little 9 mo. old Patty is listed with them. Albert is working as a fisherman and they had been wed for only a couple of years. Mildred's maiden name can most likely be found on her death certificate & perhaps on the death certifcate of her daughter. The 1930 census gives Albert's birthplace as WI. The lives and stories of all the lake's fishermen, ship captains & crew are interesting to us since we live up at the Lake Erie and can view it even as we have our meals. Several of my husband's family made their living from the lake and one brother lost his life in 1944 when two ships collided in the fog. Keep us posted on your quest. Nancy M. 3. Susan, I have only found Alfred and Mildred in Lorain County. There are estates on file at the Probate Court for them, but I have no years of deaths. I have checked other online resources and found this family in Wisconsin on the 1900 Census. On the 1930 Census, Hugo is living with his parents in Erie, PA. According to the Social Security Death Index, Hugo died in 1989 and Alfred died in May of 1973. I have found absolutely no reference of any kind to a Vincent Sharky on any of the census records available through www.ancestry.com or Heritage Quest Census records. I hope this gives you some more clues. I will send you copies of the census records via separate email. 3. Susan, Can you give us more information as to where in Lorain County this family may have lived? Were Ida, Alfred and Hugo siblings? Did they move on to other parts of the United States? I do see in the Social Security Death Index an Alfred Thielke born Sept 2 1891 and died May 1973 with a reference to Lorain County. Any dates or more information might be helpful in finding this family for you. I used to live in Columbia Township and its right on the edge of Cuyahoga and Medina Counties. On the 1880 census, he is divorced, age 42, and living with his brother Charles Peterson, age 45, and two other men -- Edward Nelson age 22, and John Johnson age 21. They are all quarry men. The only quarry I know of around there was in Olmsted Falls on the old East River Rd. North, which is in Cuyahoga County at the intersection where Columbia Twp meets. So you may want to look for cemeteries in that area. Also, his daughter Hannah Clarabelle Peterson was married in Rockford, Illinois (the second largest settlement of Swedes in the U.S.) on Feb 11, 1892 to Karl Victor Berglund, and is buried at Rose City Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Often parents live near their children in later years, so you may want to look in the Rockford, Illinois and/or Portland, Oregon areas also, although I believe he would have died before she went to Oregon. Hope something here is helpful. -Deb

    3. I recently located Peter Peterson in Lorain County. He lived in the Westview area of Columbia Township, was born about 1837/1838 in Sweden, obtained a marriage license on 21 Sep 1867, and had a daughter named Hannah on 16 Feb 1873. Beyond this, I have not been able to locate a death record or cemetery location for him. I am most anxious to find out what city in Sweden he came from, as well as the names of his parents, so I am hoping that his actual marriage record and/or some church records and/or a death record will give the names of his parents and that city in Sweden. Are there any other records in Lorain County that might give this information or the year he arrived in Lorain County? Which cemeteries would a person living in Westview likely be buried in? Which churches would have been attended by people living in Westview and Columbia Township? Would these churches possibly have been in Berea? Does the local library have a collection of obituaries for this area? We do not know when he died, but believe it was before 1900. Your help will be most appreciated.
