    1. Re: [OHLORAIN] Czech catholics
    2. Thank you, Nancy for taking the time to look into this and for offering the good suggestions for further research. I recalled that the Slovaks frequented Holy Trinity, but that church wasn't established until 1906. A childhood friend belonged to the Catholic Sokols, but I couldn't recall where the hall was located. I know that I had such fun at many of their athletic events. Thanks for the reminder! We've been so lucky to live in an area of such diverse cultures, but even in the 1950s I do recall that the nationalities still preferred their own churches! Hope you and Elmer are enjoying your summer. Jean

    3. In this time frame, in a rural the area between Elyria & Lorain, consider St. Theresa's located at Crandall. Many of The Catholic churches were not established until after the time frame you need. Of course there were several within cities. Nancy Nancy M. 1. Czech catholics
    2. Nancy Meyers
    3. Dear jean, Lorain Co. Czechs's were quickly assimilated into the American culture, beause their numbers were small & so they did not establish strong institutions of their own. They also split religiously into two antagonistic groups....the Catholics & the free thinkers. Most stayed with the latter group. The remaining Catholic Czechs merely joined with established Catholic churches in the area. There was no one single church to unify the Czech descendants. Some ideas to consider: 1- If you look at the Czech areas of the city, in the time frame you are interested in, you can cross reference the address within a county or city directory and find the nearest Catholic church. It might be a reasonable starting point if you have no other clues. 2- check where their in-laws or Czech co-workers attended for worship services. 3- marriage certificates or newsaper announcements of marriages often give the name of the clergy person who performed the cerermony. Then you can easily check the church affliation of the presiding clergyman. There was a Czech society, the Sokol Hall in 1908, located at 2402 Kelly Place. Nancy M. I think there is an obit website that the funeral homes put the obits into I just have not been able to locate it. The records at the EPL are up just unavailable - a computer clitch I think the librarian said. Thanks any and all suggestions are most appreciated..
