Family history has that George William Loghry married Nancy Jane Axtel in Lorain County Ohio on November 12, 1833, although I have no documentation of this fact. I have documentation--Deeds Book 24, pages 315-16, in Steuben County, New York, which is an indenture made on the 24th day of June 1835 between "George Loghry and Nancy Jane his wife of the town of Russia County of Lorain and State of Ohio." I also have undocumented information that they had a daughter born in Ohio in 1836. What are the chances of finding records of marriages, births, or land records for George or Nancy in Lorain County, Ohio? What venues are available in Lorain County for historical research? Debbie Jorgenson Des Moines, Iowa
I have no proof that Revolutionary War veteran Pliny Kellogg was buried in Lorain County, but I can site a reference that a person by that name allegedly was. A book titled "Official Roster, Soldiers of the American Revolution Buried in Ohio", published in 1929, under the auspices of the DAR, lists a Plinney Kellogg as being buried in Lorain County. The info contained in the book is: Plinney Kellogg (Lorain County) In 1777 served as Pvt under Washington, at battle of Monmouth, and under Gates and Arnold at battle of Saratoga, when Burgoyne surrendered. Br 1752, Westfield, Mass. D 1842, LaGrange, (there is also LaGrange in Lawrence Co) O. Mar 1782. Ref: Natl No. 56926, Vol 57, p 320, D.A.R. Lin. Perhaps the DAR Lineage book that is referenced may have more information. Also the 1879 History of Lorain County, lists Marcus and Noah Kellogg as being among the earliest settlers of Lagrange Township, arriving in 1827 --- but no mention of Pliny/Plinney. If you can document that Marcus and Noah were sons of Pliny, that would make his residence in the County more plausible. Interestingly, the 1929 book also mentions a town by the name of La Grange in Lawrence County --- Hmmm. Remember also, the 1980 cemetery book for Lorain County is based on transcription of the grave markers. Markers that had disappeared, or were missing, will not be in the book. Take the information for what it is worth --- Richard
I was given this information in an email. Looks interesting. "Thank you for your interest in the Atlas of the State of Ohio. The high quality digital Atlas data is presented in Adobe (PDF) Portable Document Format. (Atlas originally published in 1868.) Hi Pat, I personally was unable to determine or document that your Pliney Kellogg had died or was buried in Lorain County OH. Have checked my copies of the 1980 LC Cemetery Inscriptions book, the 1991 LORAIN COUNTY BURIAL LOCATIONS of VETERANS of VARIOUS WARS, the 1981 Index to Ohio Wills & Estates Before 1850. Also checked with a couple of gentlemen by phone whom I consider to have far more expertise in this RW area than I. In fact they tell me that there is not any veteran with the surname of KELLOGG buried in LC up thru WW1. Those pages 33-34 that you have referred to, are cemeteries in Amherst Twp. and there are no Kellogg's listed on those pages. Noah Kellogg, who is bured in the LaGrange Center Cem. on Rt. 303, has a very nice old marker that is taller than I am. Stood next to it back in 1970, when I moved to LaGrange area. In the 1830 census, Marquis, Noah & Plinny Kellogg are enumerated next to each other in Lagrange. In the 1840 there is a 60yr plus Pliny Kellogg in Cleveland. You could check someone at the Cuyahoga County sites as well as with the SAR organization; Have you checked the printed indexes to the many DAR volumes. I was able to find and read Pliny's RW military service records online at Ancestry.com Per the PIONEER WOMEN IN THE WESTERN RESERVE BEFORE 1850, there was at one time a Pliney Kellogg who lived in Geauga Co. & Cuyahoga Co. and briefly in Lorain Co. Can you please share with us the exact source that gives his burial place as Lorain County. There is a document at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlorain/pictures/1827LorCo.htm that has Pliny Kellogg in LaGrange 1827. Wonder how many Pliny/Plinny/Pliney Kellogg's there were? Keep us posted as you chase down clues. Deb, I live in Richfield Center, Lucas Co., OH!!! I know lots of Ott's here, but had no clue they might be related in anyway to my Gedert family. This is getting more and more interesting! Virginia PS: My younger daughter's friend is an Ott who was raised near the Toledo Express Airport but now lives in Jerusalem Twp. in Lucas Co. Perhaps he's somehow related... Deb, I'm beginning to wonder if the note on the photos I have that says "from Anna Ott" is correct. I'm thinking Anna married (and divorced) Jacob Diederich but, because she then lived with Nicholas and Margaret Ott, the person who made that notation mistakenly put her name as Ott. Neither of my sisters nor I remember our mother as talking about any other last name for Anna than Weiler. Since I don't have a lot of information on this line of my family, I'm only beginning to put the pieces of the puzzle together, and all the help I've received is really appreciated. Wow!! Thank you so much! What a goldmine of information you have provided. How did you find so much in so short a time? What's interesting is that I have photographs of my gr-gr-grandparent's headstones (John and Anna Gedert) and their grandson, Andrew, in the Old Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery near N. Ridgeville, with a note that they were taken by Anna Ott. But, we remember my mother talking about Anna Weiler. It will take me some time to digest all the information you've sent and take it to our reunion next month. Again, thank you! Isn't it amazing how one thing leads to another? We have to love the modern sleuthing techniques the internet offers us to find clues to our families. It is always finding another piece of the puzzle! Margaret
Margaret, I just happened to look in my database because I have other Diederichs and Weilers there, and realized that I have the same Jacob Weiler with his first wife in my database. This is what I have, including Jacob's father: Jakob Weiler b: Jul 3, 1826 in Mannebach, Germany, died Aug 22 1907. He was the son of Anton Weiler and Catharina Conzen. He first married Catharina Diederich who was born Aug 28 1830 in Mannebach, Reinland-Pfalz, Germany, and died Mar 28, 1865 in LaGrange, Ohio. I have Jakob's son John N. Weiler born Mar 12, 1853 in Mannebach, Germany, and died Jan 16, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio. He married Elisabeth Ternes on Oct 3 1876 in Lorain County. She was born Feb 12, 1853 in Mannebach, Germany and died Feb 16 1926 in Cleveland, OH. They had children Louisa, Fred, Albert, Stella, John, and Arthur. How funny. So Margaret Weiler, based on her age and the census, did marry Nicholas Ott. And Anna took out a marriage license with Jacob Diederich, and didn't marry an Ott. She was just the sister-in-law to an Ott because her sister married Nicholas, correct? I saw Nicholas's family in Richfield, Ohio - Lucas County in 1880 (see below). Many people came to the area for work -- either at the steel mill or shipyards. 1880 Census Richfield, Lucas Cty, OH: Father John Ott, age 55 b: Prussia Wife Emma Ott, age 39 b: Prussia Nicklaus, age 16, b: OH Matthias, age 15, b: OH Catharine, age 14, b: OH Mary, age 13, b: OH John, age 12, b:OH Anna, age 7, b: OH August, age 5, b: OH Sophia, age 4, b: OH Jacob, age 2, b:OH All of Nicklaus Ott's brothers are married in 1910 and 1920, mostly in Lucas Cty, and had been for a long time. Oh, I'm sorry I spoke too soon. She is "sister-in-law" to Nicholas Ott. And you probably knew that already. It would be good to find Nicholas with his siblings when he was young to provide a clue as to who her husband might be. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Virginia L. Hi Virginia, Are you sure Anna married an Ott? The reason I'm asking is because Anna is listed after her mother died in 1920 as living with her sister Margaret and Margaret's husband, Nicholas Ott, in Lorain. Did both sisters marry someone by the name of Ott? Deb B. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Virginia L. In earlier LC days, some Catholics did not apply for a regular marriage license at the county level. They went thru their intention process by annoucncing their bans in church. Weddings that actually did take place in LC were then supposed to be recorded at the county level, some were not. Consider also folks who lived in Avon area, may have crossed the county line to wed for privacy or other reasons. Two of my husbands oldest uncles who were married in a Catholic church in Lorain, never applied for a regular license. Just another fly in the ointment. Nancy
I'm looking for information on the marriage and divorce of Anna Weiler to a Mr. Ott during the 1900 to 1910 era. Anna was born 1880/1881 to Jakob Weiler and Gertrude Gedert Weiler in Avon Twp., Lorain Co., OH. In the 1910 Census, Anna, age 29, is recorded as living with her mother on Center Road and as being divorced. Interestingly, she's listed under her maiden name -- an error? -- or did she return to her maiden name upon her divorce? What was Mr. Ott's name? If anyone has any information or can direct me where to find it, I'd appreciate your help. Virginia Lenhart Wysong Berkey, Ohio
I am attempting to locate the burial location of Minor C. Williams, first wife Nettie, and his second wife Caroline Louise Agerter. Carrie, my great-aunt born 1874 in Lima, married Minor in 1942 in California. She died suddenly in Baltimore 27 May 1947 while on a trip with husband Minor. From family records we know Carrie was buried with Minor and his first wife somewhere in Oberlin, Ohio. I have just located info on the 'net which shows the "Williams House" in Oberlin as Ohio Historical house built between 1904-8, and Minor's first wife was named Nettie. He was a state secretary of the YMCA. His daughters were Dorothy Jean (married 1914 Mr. Dunn), and Gertrude (married 1915 Mr. Moll.) The info says both daughters were graduates of "OHS." Does anyone on the list recognize these names? Would someone kindly be able to help with their burial locations? Thank you. Judith Watt State College, PA __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I am hoping that Mary Jane H. of Wickliffe will be on this list and will email me. Apparently I did a look up for her back in March or April. I do not even know what it was. I went to my post office box today for the first time and found something she mailed me in April. I have no idea what list it was on. I want to thank her. So embarrassed. Sharon in So. California
