    1. Two Picture Window Weddings
    2. Pennola
    3. Hi List, I am hoping someone out there can help me. I have two long questions... Does any one on this list ever remember hearing about a wedding that took place in Harry H. Smith store window in Elyria, July 4, 1910? I would like to find out maybe who the little flower girl was, it was the wedding of my grandparents. I am putting together a story of the wedding. I pretty much know all that happened, but it was stated that the little flower girls name has long been forgotten. Perhaps some one out there recalls their mother telling the story of being that little girl? It was really quit the day for Elyria in 1910. Now then, my mother was married in the window of the Smith and Gerhart Co. store room window, July 11, 1942. She was referred to as a, "War Stamp Bride" I have some of the story on that wedding, but what I really want to know is was there a contest for being chosen, to be the war Stamp Bride? How was Irene Ketchum chosen? My mother for some reason never told me about this, if she did I was at the age that I did not care. Now that she is gone, I would love to be able to ask her. Isn't hindsight great? I have gone to the Lorain and Elyria Libraries and researched both weddings till I can't see straight. I hope some one out there can help me. Thanks, Penny

    3. Hi Maureen, This link was posted a while back. An Eagle Scout mapped out Ridgelawn Cemetery. He includes the following information in his notes: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/lorain/cemeteries/ridgelawn/part35.txt "Ridgelawn Cemetery On the west side of Gulf Road, between Ridge Street and Columbus Street, this cemetery includes what was earlier referred to as the Old Elyria cemetery. Burials go back as far as 1817, and possibly earlier. Within the cemetery are two Monuments, a large Mausoleum, and one Congressional Medal of Honor recipient." This page has Nathan Porter and other Porters listed, but he claims there are older burials to 1817 or earlier. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/lorain/cemeteries/ridgelawn/part26.txt PORTER, Nathaniel R-44-14 Jun13,1822* aged 46 years -Deb ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, July 21, 2005 3:51 PM Subject: [OHLORAIN] Melin Farm, Elyria 1923 > Hello list, > > I have this article listing the place of death of the first burial in > Elyria Cemetery. 2. Hello list, I have this article listing the place of death of the first burial in Elyria Cemetery. Would anyone happen to know off hand where it was located? Maureen Elyria Chronicle Telegram June 12, 1923 FIRST BURIAL HERE 100 YEARS AGO "Fred Dachtler, veteran retired blacksmith, calls attention to the fact that the first burial in Elyria Cemetery was made 100 years ago. Fred states that William Turner, a pioneer and his next door neighbor at that time, told him about the burial saying that he attended it. The man who died was Nathan Porter, death taking place on what is now called the Melin Farm north of town in 1822. The body was buried on the farm and in the spring of 1823(?) it was taken up and placed in the old Elyria Cemetery which had been designated as the burial spot for the village. A stone marks his resting place, giving his name and date of death."

    3. George Loghry and Nancy Jane Axtel were indeed married in Lorain County November 12, 1833 according to the book "Marriages Lorain County, Ohio 1824-1865" which was compiled by the Elyria Chapter of the DAR and the Genealogical Workshop, Lorain County Historical Society. Early marriage records are on microfilm at the probate court starting in 1824. Sometimes they are interspersed with other information and can be difficult to find at times. Birth records did not start until 1867, well after 1836. If George Loghry died in Lorain County their might possibly be a will or estate papers listing heirs. Wills and estates were recorded as early as 1824, also.
