I am looking for information on Leland Rawson born about 1890 or so, from Lorain County. He married Margaret Murbach and his mother's name was Metta. I believe he had a brother named Leslie. He moved to California but made several visits back to Lorain County. Does anyone know who his father was? Possibly a maiden name for his mother? Thanks for your help, Mona Caldwell Orlando, Fla. The Great Lakes Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists is sponsoring an Advanced Genealogy Discussion Group. The next meeting is on Saturday, September 17, 2005. The purpose of the group is to discuss advanced genealogical methodology as presented in case studies that have appeared in various scholarly genealogical publications. The group meets the third Saturday of the month, starting at 10:00 am, at one of the Akron-Summit County Public Library meeting rooms. The library is located at 60 South High St., Akron, OH. The meetings last about one and one-half hours. The discussions are free but pre-registration is required. Any experienced genealogical researcher is welcome to enroll. As a pre-requisite, participants should be familiar with Dr. William M. Litchman's article, "Teaching Analysis, Logic, and the Research Process: A Seminar Approach", from the NGS News Magazine, Nov/Dec 2000, pages 340-343. Each participant is requested to read several times, in advance of the meeting, the article to be discussed at the meeting. The article chosen for the September 17, 2005 discussion appeared in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, June 2005. It is titled "Tracking a Loner on the Move: J. W. Parberry Exposed by the Genealogical Proof Standard" beginning on page 94. To register, or for any questions, contact Robert Keener at [email protected] or call (330) 836-4448.

Hello List, I was wondering if someone could help me. I am looking for an out of print book "The Leary-Evans, Ohio's People of Color" by Robert Ewell Greene. I have searched all the out of print sites that came up on google with no results. Might someone know of a resource that I could check for this book. I did find the book in the Oberlin Public Library but it's a non-checkout book and the Cincinnati Library doesn't have it. Any suggestion, help, ideas, or direction would greatly be appreciated. Thank you Deborah Evans ggg-granddaughter of Wilson Bruce Evans
Some privacy concerns -- particularly with genealogy data, are probably overblown, especially when one considers much of the information has been in the public domain for years and can be quite easily found if someone is determined to find information.. But anyone who has their social security number printed on their checks or readily gives it out as identification may well find themselves the object of identity theft. Most corporate agencies are using numbers other than social security for insurance card ids, on billing statements, etc. to prevent the numbers from getting into the wrong hands. Even Social Security does not now print out the entire number on most correspondence. Yes, those vital records are expensive, but it must cost government quite a bit of money to process them for genealogy purposes when one considers the cost of salaries, health insurance for the employees, etc. In my opinion we each should pay our own way for our hobby and let our taxpayer money go towards projects that serve everyone. I don't think raising the cost of vital records has much if anything to do with identity theft. Limiting restriction to proven family may or may not. Just my opinion.... Nancy; Thanks for revealing this site. To night I spoke to a nephew I hadn't seen in 55 years. He has a common name but the date of birth narrowed it down. My half brother who I had last heard from in 1963 is still living at age 87. All this privacy stuff I find quite ridiculous. To all I wrote to this zabasearch data base and received the following information: In order to create, edit, or block your record and/or to add a ZabaLink, all for free, you must make that request in writing and mail it to: ZabaTools, P.O. Re St. Mary's of Avon, The Diocese should have copy of these records. However, it would be important to determine in advance which Diocese the church was in for the years you seek. The Cleveland Diocese has a wetsite and full-time archivist, tho I understand the archivist is very slow to respond. Re records from St. Martin of Tours in formerly Liverpool, now Valley City, Medina County. St. Martin's parish covers some of Lorain county): Getting records is nearly a lost cause. I understand that the records are fragile and the office is understaffed. However, apparently the task is not insurmountable. I was lucky to find a member on the Medina list who was able to use his considerable charm to obtain several family recods Wondering if anyone online has had any luck with St. Martin's Also wondering what records others have found in the Catholic Church holdings. I was surprised to receive information from a St. Martin's parish census from the late 1800's. Are there other censuses? I found it very helpful in tracking down a number of my cousins. Information cames from property records and prob voting app records (birthdates). The latter is no longer public here in California as of the early 1990's. Happy day! Just yesterday was able to add to my personal library some special items from a local yard sale. A 1908 telephone directory publisned by the Black River Telephone Co. If you would like a lookup please contact me off line at [email protected] Be cautioned that this info is for the city of Lorain & outlying areas and was compiled from info available late in 1907. The old system of street names & numbers were still in use at that time. (They changed in 1908) Many, many folks who operated small businesses out of their homes are listed. Also purchased a 1937 Lorain telephone book and a 1989 city directory. Was also able to add a couple of Lorain HS year books to my collection from the 30's. Am always in the marker for these sort of items, if you know of any that might be available please do let me know. Of course, all these items will end up at a genealogy/historical group someday.
