My son is another Rita evacuee. He left northeastern Houston at 2:00 am Thursday morning and thought there would be less traffic. No such luck. At 5:00 pm he finally reached Ft. Worth and that was taking back roads most of the afternoon. At 9:00 pm, after 4 hours, he made it to Denton, Texas, north of Dallas and decided to get some sleep. (He's on his way to Stillwater, OK to stay with friends at Oklahoma State). I wonder what our descendants will think when they read about the massive numbers of people who are migrating from the south during the past month? How hard will it be for them to find records of who moved where? How many digital files will survive fifty to 100 years from now? While paper records may get wet or moldy, they can't be deleted by one errant keystroke. Bobbi Sparta, Michigan
They're telling everyone now to take back roads -- hopefully, they will have time to get far enough away by that means. Will say prayers for them all. I saw on the news that they were letting some people take their cats. I hope the hurricane curves too. How far inland is your ex-mother-in-law's house? They say you should be at least 5 to 10 miles inland, and you could even drive with your cats even further inland just for the day and sleep in the car, and then go back to ensure your safety. I am sure a lot of people are in similar situations as you are. I would also just make sure your daughter and others know where you are so they can have others check on you after the storm. At least you're not in a bowl like in New Orleans -- the water will come in, and it will leave -- not just sit. I'm sure everyone's prayers will be with you and anyone else stuck there. This weather is really getting crazy! Oh, and by the way, besides the red cross offering supplies and donations, there are many many apartments and rooms offered for free to hurricane victims online if your apartment building gets severely damaged. Below are just two of the sites: http://neworleans.craigslist.org/hhh/ http://www.hurricanehousing.org Take care and best wishes! Joyce, I will be keeping you and all others in my prayers for this hurricane. Received word last night that my brother who lives in Houston was trying to get to Dallas. A normal 4 hour trip took him 8 hours. It could have taken them more if they would have gone on the evacuation rodes. But they took a lot of side streets. He lives very close to the 100 year flood plane and he wasn't taking any chances. Jane Hoholski
Fellow listers, Please add my daughter, her husband and 2 little children to your prayer list, they are trying to evacuate as ordered out of southeast Houston. They cannot even get onto a highway to head north to safety, there are 4 milllion people trying to get out as well. They could not even get to an airport. Her little 2 yr old Emmy needs to have electric to run her breathing machine. Their home is just 20 feet from a concrete bayou which will surely flood as well. Nancy Nancy M. I've been on this list for a few years now and I know that this is off topic, but just last week I moved from Parma, Ohio to Corpus Christi, Texas and with this new hurricane bearing down on us here, I'm getting a little nervous about it and am asking everyone on this list to please keep us in your prayers. I'm not even done unpacking yet and now I have to pack up again and move what I can out of my house. If Corpus Christi gets a direct hit, chances are that my house will be badly damaged or even gone. I'm in a rental house and the landlord won't board up my windows. I just spent like $3,500 between moving and renting a house, so I'm financially tapped at the moment and haven't even had time to go find a job yet, so I can't afford to go buy the lumber needed to board up the windows myself. I'm having to leave a lot of my belongings here in the house and of course we not only have to worry about the high winds, but flooding and looting also. They have issued a mandatory evacuation order for the city, so most people are boarding up and getting out. Unfortunately, I'm not able to leave because I have my 2 cats that I refuse to leave behind and because I just spent all my money to move here. I will be staying at my ex-mother-in-laws house, which is a brick house and hopefully I'll be safe there. I'm sending my 17 year old daughter out of town with people from the church, so at least she will be safe. I will however be taking my computer with me where I go and I'll be online until the power goes out, if it even does. My prayer is that the hurricane turns a little and has mercy on this city! Thanks, Joyce

Thanks for the input, Patricia. I wondered if "ni" might be a legal term. A genealogist at a state archives in another state told me that she has seen exceptions to the three year span between declaration of intent and naturalization under special circumstances. Perhaps a shorter time was allowed when the individual had already been in the USA at least five years before filing the declaration of intent? Jean
I wondered if "ni" might be a legal term. Could be. If you google the word, you might find out more. I think you're right about a person being in the country a while before they file the declaration--if memory serves me, that's what the posting I read said. Hi Jean, Ni, according to Wesbster's 3rd International edition, is an abbreviation for night. However, when I was a child, it was used in a sentence such as "They've been living here, ni 50 years." In this usage, I believe it to mean "around," "about" or "near to," or "coming up on." In fact, now that I think about it, the memory is from watching western movies as a kid! So with the use "ni, 1871" the person giving this information probably didn't know, or didn't remeber the date, and possibly not even the right year, so they stated "ni, 1871" which probably meant "near 1871, or sometime in the year of 1871." Having said all that, I would guess that is why "date of" is crossed out. Also, it was not unusual for the 3 yeaar period to be shortened, and in the case of you g-grandfather, who seemed uncertain of his arrival date, they may have just let it slide. (This is really a guess on my part, but I do remember reading on one of these boards, that the 3 years was not always observed.) My best, Patricia [email protected] wrote: I recently located the Declaration of Intent of my g-grandfather filed at Lorain County Probate Court on November 1, 1876. However, I need help with two questions now. First Question: If he filed the Declaration of Intent on 1 November 1876, then how could he be Naturalized on 1 November 1878? I thought three years were required between these two filings. Second question: On the Decl. of Intent, the section indicating the date he emigrated is blank.
