I got this site off of another list. It is a great one! I did a simple search on my surnames and got many hits. I heartily recommend visiting the "National Union Catalog of Manuscript >>Collections," also known as NUCMC, at: >><http://lcweb.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/nucmc.html> >> >> The print version, which we librarians call "nuck-muck," has been a >>reference standby for years. I didn't know it was available online, and >>boy, did I print out reams of records from it. >> >> So why should you be interested in NUCMC? First of all, let me explain >>what a "union catalog" is. A union catalog is what you call the result >>(whether in print, microform, or online) of recording and describing the >>holdings of multiple libraries, archives, or similar repositories. For >>example, I worked in a public library that had a county-wide union list of >>periodicals, which enabled us to refer patrons to another local institution >>(college, university, historical society, etc.) if our library happened not >>to subscribe to a certain periodical (magazine, journal, etc.) and someone >>else did. >> >> Now, most of you know that the colleges, universities, historical >>societies, archives, and libraries across this country have all sorts of >>one-of-a-kind items, usually from people, places, and things that aren't >>there anymore. People who are deceased, companies that are defunct, >>charities that folded, and so on. Items such as: >> >>* family bibles >>* family papers >>* business records >>* church records >>* charity records >>* ethnic organization records >>* arts & cultural organization records >>* photographs >>* political and advocacy organization records >>* maps, posters, charts >>* architectural plans >>* letters, correspondence, diaries >> >> What NUCMC did was survey these repositories large and small--across the >>entire US--and publish the results in many, many large volumes, which are >>still available in libraries. And now NUCMC is online, meaning that you can >>do a search on your family names, place names, and institutions connected >>with the people you are researching. You can search the companies they >>worked for, the clubs, societies, and fraternal organizations they belonged >>to, the churches they attended, and so on. >> >> Now, there's *never* any guarantee that the records you seek were given to >>a proper repository instead of going in the furnace or dumpster, or that an >>ancestor left important papers, but try a simple search on your (US) >>hometown and see if you were familiar with half of the stuff that turns up. >>Then try a search on "_______ family" (your surname). Those with Anglo >>names will probably have the most success. >> >> I did an easy word search on "Buffalo, New York" and got over 500 hits, >>several of which told me that some religious charities' records are now held >>by an archive elsewhere in the state; that the papers of a few prominent >>Buffalo citizens are likewise in out-of-town repositories. ///////////////////////////////////////////
I'm working on Parr family in Licking Co. and found out that some of them came from Logan Co. to Licking Co. I've seen that there is a Parr cemetery in Logan Co. Is anyone on the list connected to the PARR family? Jeanne
Hi Suz Unfortunately, none of these names are familiar or in my files. However, Columbus Grove is promising. My grandmother Jennie SMITH was born in Columbus Grove 10Feb1875, the same time frame that your SMITHs were being born there. Her parents were Jared SMITH, b abt 1814 in Morris Co NJ, and Elmira LOVE, b 11Nov1832 probably in Huron Co OH. In an application for civil war widow's pension in 1881, Elmira stated they were married in Monroe Co MI, 10Apr1848, however I have not been able to document this. Jared was injured in the civil war and was never able to resume work at his previous level thereafter. Jared and Elmira had 7 other children, William J. b 1851 and Moses b 25Nov1871, both in Piqua Miami Co OH. I have not discovered where the other 5 were born: Mary b 1858; Ida b 1859; Elizabeth b 1861; David Judson b 15Nov1866 and Ella 30Sep1869. Jared was admitted to the Veterans Home in Dayton OH in 1880 and died there 13Jan1881 and is bur in the National Cemetery in Dayton. In the pension application Elmira said that William was living in Piqua; Mary Lloyd (married?) in Delphos OH; Elizabeth in Piqua; David with friends in Lima OH; Ella with friends NEAR Lima; Moses in the Childrens Home in Troy OH and my grandmother Jennie in Piqua. I would say that Col Grove is NEAR Lima. Sure seems like there should be a connection with your SMITH family. Do any of these names ring a bell? I've just finished indexing over 400 obits from Jan 1862 through April 1862 from The Religious Telescope. This weekly newspaper of the United Brethren Church is on microfilm beginning with the 1834 issues. The paper was first published in Circleville, Ohio (until 1855 or so) and then published in Dayton, Ohio. In 1862 it had a nationwide circulation of 14,500. The obits are not confined to those within the UB Church. There are obits for Lutherans, Society of Friends, Baptists, and even the unfaithful. The paper published almost as a "local" paper in the first 30 years or so. There is no index to the microfilms. Your local librarian should be able to help you find the names and sources of old newspapers on microfilm and should be able to help you obtain the one(s) you want to view (Inter Library Loan or ILL). ---Sue Stine On Wed, 17 Feb 1999 07:07:13 -0500 "Anna Williamson" <annaw@loganrec.com> writes: >>From a beginner, >Where would I look for copies of obits? Hi Terry and List Mates, First, when we sent in our Roll Call names, I wasn't aware that one of my Mother's maternal uncles, Harry Jackson SMITH and his wife, Edith May Mort or Jones --my Mom always understood Aunt Edith was a Mort, one of her cousins says she was a Jones--lived in Logan Co. at least from 1919 to 1922. Their oldest child, Glenn Weber SMITH was born 25 Nov. 1919 in West Liberty, and their 2nd child Ruth Ann SMith was born in Jackson Center. By mid July, 1925, the family had moved back to Columbus Grove, Putnam Co., Ohio. Uncle Harry's parents were: Jackson SMITH, b. 20 June 1842 in Groveport, Franklin Co, Ohio. On 27 Nov 1864, he m. Hannah Elizabeth WOOD, b. 7 Nov. 1842 in Franklin Co., OH. They were married in Delaware Co., OH. Their first 3 children, Oliver Lee,1866; Flora May,1868; and Charles Pendleton, 1870, were all born in Groveport. The last 5 children--Hattie E, 1872; Margaret Ann, 1874; LULU MAUDE, 1976--my Grandmother--Clara H. 1881;Harry Jackson, 1883, and Lena Byrd, 1888 were all born in Columbus Grove, Putnam Co. Most of them are buried in Truro Cem. in Col. Grove. Terry, SOMEWHERE I have a locally produced small book about DeGraff, Ohio. It was very well done with quite a lot of info. I got it back about 10 yrs ago at the bank in DeGraff because my Mom's paternal side was RELYNOLDS/COOKSTON, and the COOKSTONS lived in DeGraff before going down to West Liberty (Union Twp). They originated in PA, went to Muskingum Co, then to Logan Co. Most of them are buried in Mt. Tabor Cem--just overthe line in Champaign Co., the Bellefontaine Cemetary, and I am told that my gggrandfather THOMAS COOKSTON'S wife,MARY CATHERINE STALEY is buried in the Philadelphia Lutheran Cemetary on the corner of T201 and T203 off of CR508 between West Liberty and DeGraff. I haven't yet found her gravestone there as many are in very bad shape and hard to read. As soon as I find my DeGraff book, I'll let you all know and send out what I can from it. sorry for such a lengthy note, but Smiths are so HARD to identify! Hope something here helps someone. BTW, I have a lot of photos. Good Luck all. Suz
Thanks for the reply Robert. The headstones in this cemetery read as follows: Sarah Ann Norton b. May 1, 1829, d. Aug 11, 1853 Eliza E. Norton d. Feb 5, 1878, 9y, 5m, 16d, dau. of J.R. & S Norton Infant Norton b. June 1853, d. July 1853, da. of Josiah and Sarah Your (Logan Co.) marriage information offers a suggestion to these markers, since Josiah married twice, and both times to a Sarah. It is possible that the Sarah Ann in this cemetery is his first wife, Sarah Ann Bert, and she and her newly born daughter died in the summer of 1854. Then Josaih remarries to Sarah Phenigar less than a year after his first wife dies, and perhaps this Eliza E. is their daughter? Interesting puzzle to work on. It still doesn't explain why these people are in this MOORE plot. As you said, there must be a family connection here yet to be discovered. There is an old article (I'm guessing) out of the Bellefontaine Paper, published around 1976 (Centennial) , I'm not sure. In it, it mentions my ROBERT MOORE of Fayette Co., PA. and that he was a cabinet maker and some of his crafts were then in the possession of a Dr. John Wolfe of Sun City, Az; his mother being Mary MOORE WOLFE of DeGraff. His (Robert's) desecndants being of the MOORE families of ROBERT, RAPHAEL and SAMUEL MOORE families, URIEL, UPTON, JOHN , WILLIAM and others. The reason why I am interested in this, I would like to know who has it, and some day see it. Most importantly, Robert Moore kept diaries, and I only know the whereabouts of some, not all. It may be possible that the WOLFE Family is aware of this furniture and diaries? Any Help here by all appreciated. I have not been able to draw the connection between the WOLFE/MOORE line.
