    1. Smith family, Logan co., OH
    2. Stewart Baldwin
    3. I have been researching a Smith family that moved from VA to Monroe township, Logan co., OH in the early 1800's. John Smith Sr., of Bath co., VA, living 1810 [Bath co., VA census], appears for the first time in the tax lists of Bath co., VA in 1794, his residence prior to that being unknown. His known children were John Smith Jr. [see below] and Robert Smith, d. 19 June 1834, md. 14 Jan 1806 (licence 7 Jan), Bath co., VA, Isabella Burnsides, who was b. ca. 1886, still living in 1850 [census, Logan co., OH], daughter of John Burnsides Sr. of Bath co., VA. The brothers John and Robert Smith came to Logan (then Champaign) co., OH in 1811. I do not have any serious illusions about tracing John Smith Sr. earlier in time. I know how unlikely success will be on that front. However, I would like to get a few more details on the family of Robert Smith and Isabella Burnsides, plus any other siblings whom they might have had. My reconstruction of the family of John Smith Jr. below was aided by a crucial deed naming all of his children, which I discovered a couple of years ago, followed by some serious digging in other records. I would be particularly interested in finding out more about the families of Rebecca and Jane, whom I have been able to find only in their marriage records and the above deed. John Smith Jr., of Bath co., VA and Logan co., OH, b. ca. 1770/5 [estimated from ages given in various censuses], d. 1840/1, Logan co., OH, md. 1st, 1799 (marriage bond 15 Oct 1799), Bath co., VA, Rebeckah Carrick. John Smith appears to have md. 2nd, before 1828, Sarah, whose maiden name is unknown [mentioned in the history of the Bellefontaine Presbyterian Church]. John Smith md. 3rd, 19 Oct 1838, Logan co., OH, Harriet Camper, who survived him, and was still living in 1845. Children of John Smith Jr.: 1. James Smith, of Monroe township, Logan co., OH, later of Hale township, Hardin co., OH, b. ca. 1800, d. 21 Apr 1878, Hardin co., OH, md. 4 July 1822, Logan co., OH, Mary Ann Taylor, who was b. 7 Oct 1804, d. 10 Jan 1881. 2. Sarah Smith, b. 1802, VA, d. 1866, bur. Fairview cem., West Liberty, Logan co., OH, md. 5 June 1822, Logan co., OH, Peter Kelly, who was b. 1799, d. 1856. 3. Robert H. Smith, b. 5 Oct 1804, VA, d. 10 Sep 1876, bur. Brunk cem., Cotton Hill township., Sangamon co., IL, md. 16 Feb 1826, Logan co., OH, Patience Burgess, who was b. 15 Aug 1806, d. 4 Feb 1857. 4. Elizabeth Smith, b. 10 Oct 1806, VA, d. 17 Aug 1881, bur. Fairview cem., West Liberty, Logan co., OH, md. 15 Feb 1827, Logan co., OH, John Hill. 5. Margaret Smith, b. 2 Apr 1809, VA, d. 15 Feb 1890, bur. Fairview cem., West Liberty, Logan co., OH, md. 1st, 30 June 1831, Logan co., OH, Nathaniel Kelly, md. 2nd, 20 Jan 1867, Logan co., OH, Samuel Brown, md. 3rd, 5 Mar 1875, Calloway co., MO, Archibald Allen. 6. Rebecca Smith, md. (lic. 6 Mar 1834), Logan co., OH, Richard Minshall. 7. Jane Smith, md. (1st?), (lic. 15 Oct 1833), Logan co., OH, Harvey Wilson, apparently md. 2nd. a Mr. Conklin (based to family records which give her name as Jane Conklin). 8. Isabella Smith, b. 6 Apr 1820, d. 31 Dec 1876, bur. Old Auxvasse Presbyterian Church cem., Callaway co., MO, md. (lic. 18 Feb 1836), Logan co., OH, David Woltz. 9. Samuel Smith, b. 4 Mar 1822, d. 12 July 1895, bur. Fairview cem., West Liberty, Logan co., OH, md. Mary, who was b. 27 May 1832, d. 12 July 1903. Please note that this is the only Smith family in Logan co., OH which I have researched. (I descend from child number one, James Smith, and his wife Mary Ann Taylor.) I do not have any data on the numerous other Smith families of Logan co., OH. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who is researching the above family. Stewart Baldwin

When William WILLIAMS wrote his will in 1856 he mentioned a granddaughter named Mary CLEM. I think that Nancy WILLIAMS predeceased her father William WILLIAMS and this was why he mentioned the grandchild in his will. Does anyone have any info on the family of Nancy WILLIAMS and David HIATT? It seems like Mary may have been their only child as no others are mentioned in the will. 2. Bremer,Robert
    3. I have posted indexes for the 1830 and 1850 censuses on the Logan County web page. Each entry list the name, page, and place of residence as found in the census. The 1830 census only lists heads of households. The 1850 census lists all residents of the county; however, the index is limited to heads of households and anyone within a household with a surname which differs from the head of household. I'd love to know if there were still there in 1851. I was back there a few years ago (I live in So Calif) with my sister from Chicago. We spent a week there and Edith Eads and crew from the Genealogical Society were so kind to us.

    3. Hi! I'm trying to research the REED family in Logan County. My G-Grandfather was James Williard Reed, born October 5, 1877. Died March 10, 1970 and buried in the Walnut Hill Cemetary, New Hampshire, Ohio. Was Married to Mary Elizabeth Pugh, Dec. 5, 1898 in Logan Co. Ohio. They lived in Lakeview, Ohio. James Williard Reed was the son of Mary Ann Morrison(b.July 20, 1853,D. Nov. 24, 1946) and Emanuel Francis Reed who married in Logan County, April 10, 1874. They had 14 children, all in Lakeview, Ohio. I have most of their names and pertinent dates. I also have info on Morrisons back to 1793. I'm afraid that my Reed search has come to a screeching halt because I haven't been able to find any dates, etc. on Emanuel Francis Reed. I do know that Emanuel and Mary Ann built one of the 1st 3 log cabins in Lakeview, Ohio and that Mary Ann is considered to be the 1st woman settler in Lakeview, Ohio. The other 2 cabins were inhabited by bachelors! Let me know what you've found on the Reed's of Logan Co. I'll help if I can. 3. I think you will find this in Champaign County...near Logan County. It is located on the Kennard-Kingscreek Road just north of Rout 296. The church is quite active...and does have an old cemetery next to it. I believe the minister is (was) Clifford Kissinger (former pastor of the Clark County Bethel Baptist Church). He lives in Springfield, Clark County...I think on Armsgate Drive. He would be most helpful...a very nice man.
