For many years I have been stymied by the Licking County, Ohio courthouse fire. My great grandfather was born between 1818 and 1824 in Fairfield or Licking County. His father was either James Wiseley who died prior to April 11, 1835, in Licking County, or George Wiseley who died prior to May 30, 1839, leaving a will in Licking County. The Wiseley's were early residents of Fairfield County settling in Greenfield and Bloom Twp between 1800 and 1805. The George that died in 1839 was married to Elizabeth Green in Fairfield County in 1809. The 3 or 4 different Wiseley families lived in the vicinity of Buckeye Lake, with both James and George living on the north side close to what is now Millersport. George was listed in the 1830 Union Twp, Licking County census, and his widow, Elizabeth was still there in 1840. Surely there is some way to retrieve information when the courthouse has burned. I once saw a reference to the estate of George Wisely on page 23 of Book #238. The executor was Allen Wisely(Wisley) and the date was May 30, 1839. I know there would also have been entries in the Orphan's Court for both James and George. I have never been able to retrieve any help from the Licking County Courthouse. Were there any newpapers that I might be able to retrieve on microfiche? Any help or direction would be appreciated. Best regards, Charles W. Wiseley wiseleycha@aol.com
