Then i read somewhere that it was a girl's school. Can someone fill me in? >> A Female Baptist Seminary was started in Granville in 1832. Rev Hiram Gear was the Baptist Home Missionary Agent and his wife took the school for the winter 1832-1833. She had 25 students. A series of others had charge of the school until 1839 when it was bought by the Episcopalians and was known then as "The Episcopal Female Seminary". About 1850, they moved their school to Mansfield OH and resold the property to the Baptists, and it became "the Young Ladies Institute", run by Dr S N Burton, pastor of the Baptist Church. It changed hands again in 1861 when bought by Rev M Stone. Now...... earlier in 1832 (Feb), the "Granville Literary and Theological Institution" was established, which, in 1845, became Granville College. Today it is known as Denison University. It also was started by the Baptists. I would guess this is probably where your ggg Grandfather went. Was your Lydia Butler the daughter of Deacon Eli Butler and wife Lydia? Karen Bujak crayonb@aol.com
