    1. Underground Railroad/Fugitive Slaves in Newark, Ohio

    3. I am currently doing research on the the Underground Railroad and am seeking more information on a case from Newark, Ohio, in 1849-50. In August 1849, two fugitive slaves, Adam Hall (or Mendenhall) and his half-brother, Patrick Sneed arrived in Newark, Ohio. Sneed left after a few days but Hall remained and married. In August, the sherriff received notification that Sneed and Hall were wanted in Georgia in connnection with a murder of a man in Savannah. Hall is briefly arrested, then rearrested in December 1849, and was in March 1850 delivered to Baltimore, Md., and there picked up by Edwin DeLeon of Columbia, South Carolina who claimed to be is owner. However, both DeLeon and a Judge Mordecai Sheftall of Georgia denied that either Mendenhall/Hall or Sneed was suspected of the murder, and this was only an attempt by Sneed's owner, David Dillon, to retrieve his property (Patrick Sneed) from a free state. In August 1853, Patrick Sneed is again arrested, this time while working as a waiter in Niagara Falls, NY, on the murder charge. He is taken to court in Buffalo, NY, where letters from Sam B. Sherwood and J.M. Byers, of Newark, and testimony from Licking County Sherriff Wm Parr convince the court that the murder charge was a false charge meant to capture a fugitive slave rather than a fugitive from justice. Sneed is released and goes to Toronto, Ohio. The above information is based on several articles in the Buffalo, NY papers in August-September 1853. I'm looking for documentation of this case in Ohio (and Georgia). Can anyone suggest sources that I can use? Is this case known to local historians? Any thoughts on why Adam Hall/Mendenhall would travel to Newark? Who did he marry in Newark? Any assistance will be appreciated.
