Our branch of the family pronounces the name "barnes", and several branches took on the Barnes spelling at the end of the last century. Another branch pronounces it "BER-nes". George Bearnes laid out the town of Amsterdam in Licking County. This is his immediate family: 1. George BEARNES was born July 05, 1782 in Virginia, and died May 15, 1865 in Licking County, Ohio. He married Catherine SIGLER June 06, 1797 in Maryland, daughter of John SIGLER and Elizabeth Unknown. Children of George Bearnes and Catherine Sigler are: i. Jacob Bearnes, born September 22, 1798 in Virginia; died August 24, 1862 in Knox County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth FULK February 21, 1822 in Licking Co., Ohio. ii. Mary Polly Bearnes, born 1799 in Virginia; died Aft. 1880. She married Jacob FULK March 09, 1820 in Licking County, Ohio. iii. John Bearnes, born 1801 in Virginia; died January 27, 1874 in Poweshiek Co., Iowa. iv. Ashford Bearnes, born February 25, 1804; died January 14, 1878 in Delaware County, Ohio. v. Frutilda Bearnes, born March 02, 1805 in Virginia; died July 03, 1891 in Van Wert, Ohio. vi. Phillip Bearnes, born February 21, 1807 in Ohio; died January 15, 1883 in Knox County, Ohio. My family descends from John Bearnes and Phoebe Emaline HARRISON. They were married in Licking County. Children of John Bearnes and Phoebe Harrison are: i. Electia Fidelia Bearnes, born 1833 in Ohio. She married Robert J. McCORMICK February 06, 1866 in Poweshiek Co., Iowa. ii. Hannah E. Bearnes, born April 05, 1838 in Amsterdam, Licking Co., Ohio; died April 16, 1888 in Alta, Buena Vista County, Iowa. iii. George W. Bearnes, born Abt. 1841 in Ohio. iv. John Lelory Bearnes, born April 02, 1848 in Licking County, Ohio; died May 31, 1931 in Pleasant Township, Poweshiek Co., Iowa. v. Eliza Olive Bearnes, born 1852 in Ohio. vi. Helen Melinda Bearnes, born 1857 in Iowa; died Aft. 1931. She married Unknown BEATTIE Aft. 1874. vii. Katherine Bearnes, born Abt. 1860 in Iowa.
