Hi list; Several years ago I started working as a researcher on a book published in 2002 by Ohio University Press, entitled Ohio Is My Dwelling Place Schoolgirl Samplers 1800-1850 by author Sue Studebaker. We documented a great many samplers, their makers and their teachers and schools. Since the publication of the book we have continued to document these important forms of women's history. We have recently been informed about 2 samplers from Licking County and once again I am on the research trail for information about these girls. One is signed "ANN THORN - born July 11, 1824.....completed sampler in 1839" "NEWARK,OHIO". The second one is signed by "JANE ELIZA CANE (?) ..... marked NEWARK, March 25, 1835". We are considering that the needlework instructress who most likely taught these young girls to stitch was probably Caroline Oliver Seymour, wife of John W. Seymour, both of New England. Mrs Seymour was probably teaching in the Congregationalists "select school' for boys and girls in Newark by 1835 and 2 samplers from Licking County shown in the book resemble closely Caroline Oliver's own sampler made by her at a younger age. Any information will be greatly appreciated. This is our small way of documenting the life and times of women in Ohio in the first half of the 19th century.
