    3. I'm sorry, but Elias Hughes did not found Newark. He is, however, credited with being one of the first white settlers in Licking County along with John Ratliff and both their families. They arrived in 1798 and settled in an area that came to be known as "the Bowling Green," which is about 4-5 miles east of the center of present day Newark. Newark was founded in 1803 by William C. Schenck, who also laid out Toledo and Franklin, Ohio. By the way, there was another Elias Hughes, b. 1830 in Pennsylvania, who settled near Granville to the west side of Newark in 1863. All this is in Hill's History of Licking County, which is online at http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Licking/LickingIndex.htm Dan Fleming Reference Librarian Newark Public Library System Newark, Ohio -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, March 07, 2005 7:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHLICKIN] Re: Elias/Elijah Hughes This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. In his later years he went blind, and lived with his son in or near Utica. At a a major Library, if you use a searh for Jesse Hughes, you should get a book title that you can request as a loan transfer. I can't remember the title, but it's a book you can't take out, and would have to view in a reading room. Elias is in it, also You should email me off list, as you are a distant relative. [email protected] Anyone else that is connected should do the same. Lots of Hughes in that area. ==== OHLICKIN Mailing List ==== visit: LICKING COUNTY GENEALOGY at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohlickin/ ============================== Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the areas they lived.
