I am researching the following Licking Co. (city of Newark) families: William Phillips--b. abt. 1810, possibly in Pennsylvania. Married Louise Sloat abt. 1830 (in Virginia??). In 1850 Licking Co. Census for city of Newark, William was listed as age 40 with no spouse listed. These children shown: M.L. or M.J.(?-hard to read), age 16; Louisa, age 12; Easther, age 8; Amanda, age 6. In same household are enumerated: Hester Nichols, age 56, born in VA; Elizabeth Nichols, age 33; James Nichols, age 22; L.H. Nichols, age 70; Eliza Nichols, age 17. Louisa or Louise Phillips, dau. of William was my great-grandmother. She married Dr. Francis R. Keefer in Tazewell Co. Illinois in 1855 when she was 17 yrs. old, so suspect William may have also moved there. Could not find him when I checked 1860 Licking Co. Census. Louise's death certif. gives her mother's name as Mary Evia. Catherine Nickles (a step-mother??). Wm. Phillips' occupation was boatman. He is NOT the William Phillips who was son of Jacob Phillips and Anna Frazier, the one Phillips Licking Co. family I have found data on. That William was b. abt 1806, married a woman named Anna, had 9 or 10 children, and lived at one point in Fallsburg Twp. Welcome ANYTHING on these families!!! This has been a major brick wall in my research. Susan Carlson
