To reply to the question about Marple Cemetery and Abraham Fry's tombstone. I am Vice President of the Licking County Genealogy Society and chairman of its Cemetery Committee and we "read" Abraham Fry's tombstone 2 years ago. In fact, I am looking at a very clear photo we took of it, right now. The old transciption of the stone, published in a previous book years ago is, we think, incorrect and was stated as 1820. The area over the six is weathered, but we think it says 1826 and due to the weathering, it had been previously read as 20. The whole stone is sandstone, and depicts a large urn with a vine and flowers coming out of the top....below the urn, in the background are two weeping willows. Over the urn , at the very top of the stone is an open book, and on the left hand page it says: The Ho- ly Bible (written and hyphenated exactly as above. On the urn is written (exactly): In Memory of RevAbraham (with a much smaller m, evidently to fit it on the stone) Fry donor of this burying(small ing) ground, died Jan 25 1826, aged 49years 6mo &24(possibly 21)days Actually, it made us wonder if Abraham Fry is even buried there, or it is just in his memory, since he donated the ground. We feel he probably is there. If anyone has a scanner, this picture is an enlarged 8 1/2 by 11 photocopy of the picture, and could be scanned. Marple Cemetery is located north out of Chatham, in NWNewton Twp., on the east side of Preston Rd., Twp. Rd. 75, right below the Washington Twp. border. We did some further investigation and found a deed for 2 acres to Abraham Fry from Joseph Armstrong and wife, Elsy, written and recorded 19 Sept.1825, for the above land. What is strange is that the deed, though written TO Abraham Fry, has his wife, Mary signing on it, like a deed would if they were selling the land. But it does state that they are is buying it. And, there is an estate in ,I believe, 1827 in KNOX Co. for an Abraham Fry.....where this man WAS known to own land. This all indicates that he died in 1826, not 1820.
