    1. Johnson Family 1840 Census
    2. James Wesley Johnso
    3. I need help determining whether the Isaac Johnson enumerated on the 1840 Ohio Census as a head of household in UNION TOWNSHIP, LICKING COUNTY, is my great-great-great-grandfather. Please bear with me if this seems long and complex, but it's all I have to go by: My great-great-grandfather, Luther Samuel Johnson, was born April 2, 1835. He was enumerated on the 1880 Kansas Census in Winfield, Cowley County, and gave his place of birth simply as "OHIO." His parents' names were Isaac (born 1793) and Betsy Johnson (born 1801), places of birth unknown. In order to determine where in Ohio Luther Samuel Johnson was born in 1835, I have compiled a list of all 14 heads of household named Isaac Johnson in the 1840 Ohio Census. I copied all information given for each of those 14 and spent hours analyzing it. Only one of those 14 matches the age and sex distribution for my family, in UNION TOWNSHIP, LICKING COUNTY, but even then it only matches if "Jasper Johnson" was a girl, not a boy, and if one of the children in the family had died in infancy by that time. Here are the dates I have from a "Record of the Johnson Family" found in an old Bible belonging to a second cousin of my father's. I do not know who filled it out, when, or how accurate the dates are. Isaac Johnson, b. 9 Dec 1793, d. 1 Jun 1870 Betsy, b. 7 Jan 1801, d. 24 Apr 1874 Sylvester, b. 2 Jun 1817, d. 3 Feb 1900 Lovenia M., b. 23 Aug 1819, "Died in 1872, I think" Thomas K., b. 9 Dec. 1821, d. 1822 Mary, b. 30 Dec. 1823 Jasper, b. 20 Apr 1825, d. 23 Mar 1901 William B., b. 12 Oct. 1827, d. 31 Dec. 1904 Isaac G., b. 1 Jan. 1831 Diantha, b. Jan. 28, 1833, d. 1841 Luther S., b. 2 Apr. 1835, d. 27 Dec 1906 Margery, b. 19 Apr. 1837, d. 1841 Derius, b. 21 Jul 1839 Henry M., b. 11 Dec 1841 The 1840 Ohio Census, Roll 408, sheet 382, has this: Isaac Johnson 2 males 5-10 years old 1 male 10-15 years old 1 male 40-50 years old 2 females under 5 years old 1 female 5-10 years old 1 female 10-15 years old 1 female 15-20 years old 1 female 30-40 years old Total: 10 people 1 employed in agriculture There is no Isaac Johnson in Licking County in the 1830 Ohio Census. Since the child Isaac G. Johnson has no information in the "Records of" other than date of birth, he MAY have died in infancy, since most of the other people listed have dates of death. However, I've never heard of a woman named "Jasper." Has anyone else? I have to add that I had a great-uncle named "Jasper Johnson." Luther Samuel Johnson later lived in Jones County, Iowa (1850s, 1860s), Lucas County, Iowa (1868-1872), Cowley County, Kansas (1879, 1880), Nevada County, California (1886-1897) and Wallowa Valley, Union County, Oregon (1897-1906). I welcome any comments or advice on how to determine whether the 1840 Licking County, OH Isaac Johnson is in fact my ancestor. Of course, if anyone recognizes the above people, so much the better. Any cemetery indeces available for Licking County? Any church records? Birth records? Thanks! James W. Johnson New York City
