My family originated in Shenandoah co. and show up in Licking and Knox co. about 1830. They also went on from there to Indiana. I wish you luck in your search. You might want to contact the Ohio Genealogy Society, they were of great help to me. 1. HOUSDEN early 1800's
    2. Vicky Drake
    3. I'm grasping at straws here, but I'm at a point where I will try anything. My ggggrandfather Edmon/Edward HOUSDEN was born in Shenandoah (now Page County, Virginia) in 1790. He is mentioned in his father's will in 1800. AND THEN HE DISAPPEARS! I pick him up again in 1830 in Delaware County, Indiana (now Grant County) and can chase him foreward to me without problem. I have recently found some information that makes me think that he may have gone to Ohio at sometime during his 30 years of hiding. As I have looked at two of his other children in Indiana I find that they have spouses who were all born in Ohio. In fact in the 1880 census one of the children says that her mother (Cassandra, wife of Edward) was born in Ohio. In the 1870 Grant County, Indiana Census I find surnames (Jenkins and Judy) that are related to my Housden family in Virginia. These Jenkins and Judy's are all born in Ohio. A distant cousin who is the president of the Page County, Virginia historical society and is pretty knowledgable about the long ago going ons of the county contends that a large number of Page County residents migrated to Clark and Champaign counties Ohio fairly early in the 1800's. The folks in Clark and Champaign Counties also think there was a migration to Licking County. All of that said does anyone on the list recognize any of these surnames: HOUSDEN, JUDY, JENKINS, PETEFISH, ALGER, DOVAL, CUBBAGE, KITE, GRIFFITH, LUCAS, NAUMAN, PAINTER, PENCE, SHORT, GEORGE, SEEKFORD, STRICKLER. Not all of these names are directly related to me but they are Shenandoah/ Page County Virginia names that may have migrated into Licking, Clark and Champaign Counties. I'm more than happy to share the rather copious information that I have on the Housdens. Vicky Drake dvicky@primenet.com

    3. "The Granville Times" was published weekly in Granville, OH from 1880 to 1941. It carried death notices and obituaries not only for residents of Granville but for many others in and around Licking County. An index to these death notices and obits published from 1901 to 1941 can be found on line at http://users.gurulink.com/donyoung. This link is on the Licking County GenWeb page also. I hope to complete the 1880 to 1900 section of the index within a few weeks. Please be patient. Don Young

    3. I looked in my "Site Finder" program for your Hayden's Corner and came up with nothing. However there are five mentions of a Hayden in next door Franklin Co. They are all listed with the same latitude and longitude so are the same place. The place is Hayden now and is NW of Columbus. It was known as Bronsons, Bronsons Station, Brunstons, West Hayden and now Hayden. Hayden Road and Hayden Run go east from there to the Scioto River and the road picks up on the other side, but I soon loose it before it gets to Licking Co. A slim clue to be sure, especially since Licking Co. was formed before 1830 and was not taken from that part of Franklin Co. Ben Whitney

    1. Native Son
    2. Kim W. Day
    3. I was doing a search on a family surname and ran across the following information on a Licking County "native son." He was also the favorite uncle of my great grandmother. We have several postcards from him into the 1910s. This was found in a transcribed county history of Thayer Couny, Nebraska, town of Davenport. G.W. later moved to Geneva, Nebraska. Here's the complete text of the section. If anyone is related, please contact me: GEORGE W. BEARNES, general merchant, was born in Licking County, Ohio, February 19, 1842, and was reared on a farm in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He enlisted August 9, 1862, in the Twenty-eighth Iowa Infantry, serving three years. In 1866, he went to Linn County, Mo., and was for three years engaged in the livery business. He came to Nebraska in August, 1869, and for eighteen months engaged in the livery business at Brownville, Nemaha County, with George S. Phillips; then in the same business in Falls City for eighteen months, and nine months after that period also carried on a hardware business. In 1873, he removed to Nuckolls County and erected a mill, in company with John Schuyler, and shortly afterward moved it to the Blue River, south of Edgar, where they ran it until November, 1879. Mr. Bearnes then sold out his interest and came to Davenport, Thayer County, and in the following February engaged in this business. He carries a fine stock and is popular and enterprising. He owns a one-half interest in the elevator here, and is also engaged in dealing in live stock. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I've been losing one-half pound per day! 1. Hayden's Corner - A Place???
    2. Carol Jo Thompson
    3. Hi all... In the 1830's an ancestor is said to have been born in Hayden's Corner, Licking County OH. The state historian says there was never such a place. Is it possible that Hayden's Corner might have been an informal name for a neighborhood site? If that's the case, is there anyone on the list familiar enough with Licking county that you'd be able to enlighten me about such a place? Any help on this matter will be most appreciated. Thanks! Carol Jo

    1. Boucher Family - early 1800s
    2. Brian K Luginbill
    3. I am researching the Boucher family that settled in Licking Co. in the early 1800s. I sent a look-up request several weeks ago to the "probate file book" volunteer listed on the Licking Co. webpage, but have not heard from them. Is there someone one this list who has access to the probate file listings? I am looking for a probate file that lists Boucher as the surname, given name unknown. I am hoping it will tell me the name of the father of Jacob, Nancy and Joseph Boucher. There may also have been another brother named John Boucher. Jacob was born 22 Sep 1796, Nancy was born in 1800, and Joseph Boucher was born about 1805. John may have been older than Jacob as he served in the War of 1812, after the family had moved to Ohio. Jacob and Nancy were supposedly born in Maryland, and Joseph in Pennsylvania. Nancy married John Barrick on 5 Jul 1815 in Licking Co. Before the 1830 census, she and John moved to Tazewell Co., IL. Jacob and Joseph followed, as Joseph appears on the 1840 Tazewell Co. census, and Jacob was buried there in 1858. Thanks, in advance, for any help or information on this family. I will gladly exchange information. Sincerely, Cheryl F. Luginbill timetraveler@apex2000.net
