Original source for the article was the Newark Weekly newspaper article of 18 March, 1894. Early in the article it states that there were nearly 100 deaths in Newark. The article also states that it swept over the country in 1854. Perhaps this would explain some of the deaths in the 1850's. -- Bill Johns, library staff volunteer and member of Licking County (Ohio) Genealogical Society, Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. 3. Can anyone familiar with Licking Co. history tell me if there were any major events in the 1850s that would have killed a lot of people? Epidemics? Fires? Storms? I just found the answer to the question I posted here a few weeks ago--yes, my great-great-grandmother, Irena Margaret NEIGHBARGER, was married to someone other than my gg-grandfather (Valentine L. SPAWR) at the time of the 1850 census. In fact, I've learned that she married John GRIFFITH in 1848 and that they had two children in about 1850 and 1852. About 1857, she married my gg-grandfather. I had never heard of the first husband or their two children until now, which makes me suspect they all died, and probably about the same time. I'd welcome any clues, suggestions, theories, whatever. 2. Greetings fellow geneologists. I am looking for any information concerning Peter Wagoner b. approx. 1798 in Maryland or Germany and Mary Murry b. approx. 1800 in Ohio. They were married on Dec. 9, 1819 in Licking Co. We know of one son born to this marriage. Harvey Wagner was born in Licking County on Oct. 27, 1827. He (Harvey) later married Susan Crawford in Morgan Co. and settled in Washington County where he was a teacher for many years. But Peter and Mary have disappeared. HELP!!!!!! :-) Thanks, Dan Wagner

    1. CONKLE
    2. Carolyn J. Anderson
    3. Hello, I am new to this list and wonder if anyone has any information on the Conkle family who lived in Etna, OH. We just returned from a trip to the Archives where we discovered that my gr grandfather, Henry Conkle, was born there either 1843 or 1847. 1850 census shows Henry's father as Samuel, b. 1810 and mother as "Hana," b. 1811. Henry and a brother Adam are both buried at Hill Cemetery in Reynoldsburg. Do I have any cousins out there? Samuel and Hana's children were Andrew b. 1831, Adam b. 1833, Mary b. 1835, Elizabeth b. 1837, Sarah Ann b. 1837, Lydia b. 1841, Lucinda b. 1843, and Henry b. 1847 (according to 1850 census) Henry listed his age as 18 in 1861 when he enlisted in the Civil War, but the census record would make him only 14. Henry married Lucina SHADWICK in 1865. Their children were Mary Edna, Frank Andrew, Edward E., and Siebert Ritson, my grandfather. Siebert married Martha Elizabeth Allen, d/o Stephen ALLEN and Nancy Jane MANN, in 1900. Their children were Beatrice, Martha Esther, and Carl Kermit, b. 1907, my father. Any advice on where I should go to get more info on Samuel and Hana? Thanks in advance. Carolyn Conkle Anderson

    1. Neighbarger
    2. Hi Laurel! Your puzzle re: the 1850 census in Perry Twp. made me open up my 1860 census and look for Neighbarger. In the household of Sanford and Tabitha Priest I find Agnes Neibarger (sic), age 24, b. OH, several more Priests and Amanda Neibarger, age 9., b. OH and Lanford O. Neibarger, age 4, prob. male and b. OH. I know you said that your family moved away before this time, but evidently some remained. I have no idea of their connection to the Priests.... Hope this helps - and doesn't give you another puzzle! 1. NEIGHBARGER-GRIFFITH-census questions
    2. Busch
    3. I have finally confirmed that my gg-grandmother, Irena Margaret NEIGHBARGER, was the daughter of James and Catharine (LIVINGSTON) NEIGHBARGER of Licking Co. She was in their household in Perry Township in the 1850 Licking Co. census. Now I have another mystery. In the census, after James and Catharine Neighbarger, all the names in the household were first names only with ditto marks for the last name--except the name directly above Irena's: John Griffith. He was age 28; she was age 23. The names following Irena all had ditto marks for last names, and the ages ranged from 19 to 5. Does the ditto mark with Irena, under John Griffith, mean that she was married to him? (I've never run across that name before.) Would all the names that follow--ranging in age from 5 to 19--be Griffith? The ages seem much more appropriate to be siblings of Irena (Neighbargers) than offspring of her and John Griffith. Was he just an unrelated person living in the household (in which case the census taker made a mistake by not writing out Neighbarger again before going back to ditto marks)? Or was John a Neighbarger with the middle name "Griffith" (and the census taker made a mistake by not inserting the ditto marks after it)? I do not have a marriage record for Irena and Valentine SPAWR (my gg-grandfather), but he gave her name as Irena Neighbarger (not Griffith) when their daughter was married. The James Neighbarger family moved to McLean Co., Ill., some time between 1850 and 1860. I got some very helpful information from Janet, Carla, Chris, and Gloria when I asked about the Neighbarger connection in January. I would really appreciate any additional information about the Neighbargers or any suggestions on where to look next (and how to interpret the census!). 1. CRANDALL, Angeline Melissa
    2. At 15 years old or so CRANDALL, Angeline Melissa boarded a covered wagon and headed out west so she would not have to marry an older man. Her father was a Mormon,I believe. She married BRUNTY, John T. (from Ireland?) and it is believed that may have been in Susanville, Lassen Co., CA where she also gave birth to her son, BRUNTY, John F. b. 21/04/1865, however, there seem to be no records in Lassen Co. as it was a goldrush town. (The "F" in my Grandfather's name stands for Francisco (as in San Francisco), and I believe it's because John T. might have left Ireland during the potato family and gone straight for the gold. I have no idea where to start, but had such a situation in TN and it seemes as though everybody seemed to rally 'round me. Hope you will help too.

    2. Hi Carolyn! You are our Fallsbury expert! Thanks for the offer. Would you have anything on Noah H. Tilton who m. Amanda C. Painter? She was b. abt. 1853. I'd love to know their children. However, according to Noah's brother's obit., he was in Martinsburg, Knox Co. by 1881 - so Fallsbury might not show them....
